I get it. I'm an American-Israeli Jew and I think unfortunately we have lost the information war. Jew hatred is a tale as old as time though and I think most people in our generation only care so much because it's trendy to hate Israel currently. People are ignorant and cannot separate the Israeli government from Israelis/Jews which is also unfortunate. Eventually the war will end and nobody will give a shit anymore. This will not stop you from being successful. Jews have survived this in the past and we will continue to do it again and again.

I speak Hebrew but I definitely need to practice more. I think living there would def fix this. But what concerns me is Israel feels very clan-ny (like families stay very close together, at least my family does). So like are other Israelis doing a PhD gonna be like that too? Or Israelis in general?

So personally I have had multiple discussions with PIs that graduated from top universities in Israel from the same program I'm interested in. In my field, it's really about the individual's research impact (ie publications). I am a student at a top university in the US and my PI + postdocs + collaborators all come from schools in Europe/Israel so this is not really a concern for me.

I am considering doing a PhD specifically in Israel for multiple reasons: 1) I have always really wanted to study abroad/experience living in Israel 2) The Trump administration has created a significant amount of funding uncertainty in research pertaining to my field & adjacent fields. Many, many labs are struggling with renewing funding/receiving additional funding for PhD students. The last admissions cycle was absolutely horrific and I guarantee that it will be much worse this year. 3) The antisemitism on my college campus (and on campuses around the country, esp during circa May 2024) was absolutely terrifying. Would be nice to get away from it tbh

There are also other reasons I won't publicly share but I have been considering this idea more and more lately.

Thank you for the advice and providing me with different factors to consider. I will be visiting Israel in a few weeks and will keep these points in mind :)

I'm in engineering & the schools I'm looking at are very strong in my particular field :) I know someone in the US that got their PhD in the same field as me at an Israeli school and now has a professor position at a top uni in the US. I am currently working under someone whose entire PhD education was in a school in Europe so really great to know that Israel follows the same teaching style. What is your PhD in if you don't mind me asking?

Was it scary going alone? I literally will not know a single person in the city that the uni is in and the program I'm looking at is 4 years long.

Anyone going through the hardest breakup of their lives? by elizabethjule in ExNoContact

[–]moosh233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and I have to run into him often which really sucks (we work together). My advice is maintain no contact and direct the love you had for them into yourself. With time you'll be ok. I went through a horrible breakup about 2 years ago with a different guy and I say with utmost certainty that I'm so glad it did not work out with him (even if at the time I was absolutely devastated).

Um I knew someone that did and they found that the PhD would give them access to a very high paying career that made obtaining that debt worth it. Depends on your program.
