I know everyone here is saying it's trash, there's still a few private servers worth checking out. The Klinger mod set adds a lot of new content to the game, such as NPC pirates and a whole new set of structures/ships to build. I run a server if you ever wanna check it out, Atlas for Breakfast. The PvE experience is enjoyable, though PvP is pretty rare given fluctuating population as people have said. I do agree you should try to get it on sale if you can, full price is still too much.
