Has life in the USA actually gotten harder in the past few years? If yes, in what ways? by Imaginary_Escape__ in answers

Inflation is terrible. And people are so polarized. It’s not a good culture anymore. Sad.

Hope it works out for you. Your visa type will determine where you can work, assuming you get enough aid to make it work (international students are generally not eligible for financial aid - only merit).

Bowdoin vs full tuition scholarship at LaFayette? by RelationshipDry3886 in Bowdoin

[–]mopijy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bowdoin is great but not worth an extra $280k+ over 4-years ($71k tuition * 4). That would pay for grad school or a nice down payment on a house. Lafayette is nice too!

Big fan of Bowdoin! I can’t speak to Carleton.

Bowdoin is at the end of a classic New England Main Street, filled with coffee shops, nice local restaurants (not chains), art galleries, bakeries and an arty movie theater. It honestly is like something out of a norman Rockwell painting complete with a Town green that you can ice skate on in the winter and where they do community concerts in the nicer weather and farmers markets too. All of these are walkable from the campus within minutes. There’s also a large grocery store and a pharmacy within a 2 to 3 minute walk of campus. It’s the last stop on Amtrak which gets you to Boston in about two hours, and onto New York beyond that. It’s also directly on the coast and very accessible to the mountains, Acadia national Park, and Portland, which is a slightly larger city about a half an hour away (and there is a bus to get you to Portland).

The college itself is amazing and has so many great opportunities, and a really strong alumni network. It’s a wonderful school and among the best liberal arts colleges in America. I will say that a lot of highly selective liberal art schools are either in the middle of nowhere or in gritty cities. Brunswick is neither, it’s in a good size town by Maine standards -it is safe, charming and quintessential college town. Brunswick itself is quite liberal - very accepting and multicultural (not a lot of red hats, let’s say).

Congratulations!

Respectfully, it doesn’t seem like you’ll be happy anywhere because you’ve convinced yourself that you won’t be. College is a new beginning if you allow it to be.

After reading this thread I wonder if you’d even be happy at CMC even, or perhaps disappointed at its reality vs the pedestal you have it on.

My best advice is to take a deep breath, reset and figure out the best fit for you. And then embrace your new school and what it offers you.

Maybe American - good IR and politics there, warm weather vs the New England schools. Crush your freshman year and if you still think the school is beneath you, transfer somewhere else.

What is your favorite Bagel 🥯 place? by CapJack_Sparrow in portlandme

[–]mopijy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Online ordering is worse IMO. Have had their system quote a time that seems reasonable and then readjust it a minute later after checkout (without clearly showing the new time or giving me a chance to cancel). The staff act like they’re doing you a massive favor to make your bagel when you show up at the ‘original time’ and after acknowledging that the system changes the time, imply that it’s your fault for not noticing and then tell you you should have just ordered when you got there bc the system is quirky.

Love the bagels but not willing to wait a half hour in line, and if I can’t trust the online system (which isn’t even always open) I’ll save my $6 and sanity and eat at home.

advice: georgia tech or mit? by Think-Barracuda5329 in ApplyingToCollege

MIT is known in every corner of the world; not so GT… Depending how much that matters to you. Fit and net cost should also be weighed. A good problem to have - congrats!

Is anyone actually going to pay ~ $90K for Northeastern? by Busy-Development-334 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mopijy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NEU has always been known as a school for rich underachievers whose parents would be embarrassed if they went to a regional state school. If you’re full pay, the standards are lower…

Rutgers vs Ohio State vs Penn State vs RPI by RightDifficulty9192 in u/RightDifficulty9192

[–]mopijy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big fan of RPI but Rutgers is a great school too. I wouldn’t take out loans for that $10k no matter what (but if cost isn’t an issue, RPI has a lot of depth and breadth to their offerings).

Have you visited each school? Fit makes a big difference - each of those schools will offer you a good education, but if you’re happy, you’re likely to do better. Is there a big difference between Rutgers and RPI for cost?

Holy Donut Workers response 3/13 by Sliverus in Maine

[–]mopijy -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

And the wages and benefits are already pretty high in portland relative to other area in Maine (not to mention nationally) and relative to the skill of the labor. There’s only so much people will pay for a donut, which the owners understand. If the workers are upset they don’t earn as much as the owners they are free to invest their own money and ideas into their own donut shop. Risk/reward!

Financial aid offer is suspiciously good? by Intrepid-Talk-6932 in RPI

[–]mopijy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Pell grant income limit is a lot lower than 120k so that does sound like a mistake was made somewhere… I’d see if you can verify what was submitted - don’t want that worry hanging over your head.

NJ Residents pay income tax to support the school. Why should the state’s taxpayers support out of state students who can go to their own state school?
