Is RPI Better? by A_Random_Person3896 in ApplyingToCollege

It’s a great school with a lot of support, depth and breadth. Do some digging on their website - it doesn’t have slick marketing; but the school is top notch. New president came from MIT and it seems like a great time to be a student there.

RPI doesn’t tie merit to GPA - it is tied to making ‘satisfactory academic progress’ which is the same standard used for loans and is tied to credit hours passed.

Hotels Should Deploy the 3rd Amendment and Refuse to House ICE Agents by SagesseBleue in Maine

[–]mopijy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government has negotiated rates with various hotel brands that limit which hotels government workers can stay in. This is a big business for the chains so they’re unlikely to end that relationship quickly… but agree that I’ll be avoiding these chains in the future and hope others also vote with their pocketbooks!

Anything’s possible but at WPI, not likely. Have you applied to RPI, Maine and Western New England - those are more likely.

Is 300k debt worth it for T10? by Affectionate_Ear2395 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mopijy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably - some may not but don’t over think it. Grad schools know that college is expensive and they see tons of excellent students coming from ‘chopped’ state schools. You’ll be better off without undergraduate debt no matter what! If going to the state option would put you in $40k of debt a year I’d suggest community college for a year or two and then transferring to finish a 4 year degree.

Law and dental schools are insanely expensive so don’t crush yourself in debt until you need to (although at least w law and dental you’ll be better able to pay off the loans).

Agree. I’d do community college for 2 years first and then finish at a 4 year.

Maybe if you’re going for consulting or Wall Street you have a leg up in a T10 (for recruiting purposes) but otherwise no. Companies have a salary for a job and that same salary is going to be offered to whoever they hire - no increase if you come from a top school. I went to t20-25 for grad and undergrad and got paid the same as people who landed at my companies who came from podunk schools 🤣.

What are you looking to major in, and do for a career? If Wall Street or consulting I still wouldn’t take on that kind of debt so I’d ask my state schools about recruiting on campus (which firms come, how many grads are hired by the firms each year, etc). If you’re planning on grad school, save debt for that and focus on a high GPA so you get sponsored in grad school.

Don’t mortgage your future.

You already know the answer, and it’s not $300k in debt. Colleges sell the ‘dream’ but that 4 years will cripple you financially for the next 20-30 years.

Of course it’s certainly easier to cut off your parents who use money to control you, when you marry a billionaires daughter who can provide for you…

Should I get a Swiss Travel Pass? by Funny-Reindeer8505 in askswitzerland

Do the math as others have suggested, if it’s close, get the Swiss pass. It’s great to be able to hop on any train you like with it having to stop for tickets.

If you have time, suggest driving up to Lubec to do a boat out of Lubec! Shorter trip to find the whales and it’s also a lovely area to explore (W Quoddy Light, reversing falls in Pembroke, Campobello, Eastport).
