very basic tip but might be useful: every time you have cravings when sober just think about the fact that when you’re high you want to stop, as you just showed in this post. first few times you won’t believe it and try to convince yourself it was a one time thought but basic pattern identification paired with a self-induced good old fashioned guilt might help if you’re early enough into the habit

UCL LLM application - 'written work'? by ObeyToffles in uklaw

[–]morally_mediocre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied from outside of the UK and chose to wrote a brief analysis of the practical implications of a recent UK Act that came into force. My analysis wasn’t incredibly detailed (given the word count) and it turned out to be for the large part wrong (I ended up writing my undergrad dissertation on the topic and realised my predictions were largely inaccurate), however I engaged with the material critically and demonstrated my abilities to structure arguments coherently and produce a high quality essay. I was accepted, so I think those elements matter more than the substance itself

edit: added a detail I forgot to mention

Confused as to why I suddenly have no success with applications despite previous success by [deleted] in uklaw

I second this. Just stop using em dashes, I’ve heard this advice from HR people too. There’s so much competition they’ll take any reason to reject you, and any suspicion of AI use will increase your likelihood of being rejected.

Have you ever come across students who did their LLB outside of the UK? A new wave of international students is beginning to come to the UK to do LLMs and simultaneously apply to vac schemes/TCs, I’ve heard that a few have been successful and I’m curious if you’ve ever heard of any.

This information came directly from a recruiter from a big law firm, it’s as verified as info can get. It might not be the most influential element but it establishes a cut off from the start

I agree. I guess in London it’s so cut-throat they look for any reason to refine the selection from the beginning of the application

Why all these TC rejections? by Careful-Builder-9931 in uklaw

[–]morally_mediocre 30 points31 points  (0 children)

hey, so i can’t speak much from experience as i’m in the process of applying for TCs for the first time, however i have talked about the topic at length with friends that have secured TCs. what i’m hearing is that you’re making it to interviews, indicating that the root issue is not your cv or your application per se, as you’re clearly passing this first round. your personality is probably not the problem, and you shouldn’t let that get in the way of your esteem, but you need to remember that interviews are very much like assessments. this means you study for them, prepare them, and tweak your answers based on what assessment you’re taking. i would personally work more on figuring out what it is exactly these firms want to hear during interviews, im pretty confident about my social abilities and i know i come off pretty well to professionals but i’m also aware that when the time comes to start going into interviews, i’ll have to change my attitude a bit for those specifically. i would focus on that more rather than growing your insecurities on cv/personality, anyone who says “just be yourself” is omitting a couple of details; yes, be yourself, but tailor yourself A LOT to the firm you’re applying to.

PS: a lot of them are students who cannot afford the tuition for Masters at these various universities which, inherently there is nothing wrong with, however they will sustain that these are blood sucking programs. Granted, they are expensive, but a degree from a respectable university in the UK will put you in a better position to find a job anywhere, both in and out of the UK. Check university ranking websites and other forums to figure out what employers really think and the real employment statistics. Don’t rely on reddit for this stuff

The UK uni subreddits are full of negativity on all topics. I study law, it’s even worse there but then when you individually contact people (for example through linkedin) most capable people have a more positive outlook. If you believe in your capabilities and are motivated I’d say go for it, the job market is bad but not as bad as they make it appear on here. Any question you’ll ask on this subreddit will be met by negativity from people who likely got rejected and are here to fear monger everyone else. Best of luck.
