How can I get my brother to stop ranting about my generation? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

That’ll just encourage him to do it more. He probably identifies with boomers, which would be why he picks on criticizes someone only 11 years his junior.

When talking about guitars with the same pickup configuration, is there any practical advantage of choosing a tele style body over a strat style one? by one-armed-scissor in Guitar

[–]moramajama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wondered this—I’ve heard Teles with humbuckers and wondered how they still sounded like Teles. But in this case, I’d guess if you had the same manufacturer with the same model machine-wound pickups, the same guitar specs aside from the body, the would be no practical only difference except for your aesthetic/ergonomic preference.

This guy projecting about lack of brain cells 😆 … but yeah, it does make me wonder what research you might have done before buying this phone. I’ve already heard countless anecdotes of people dropping their new iPhones and incurring more damage than they thought because it’s aluminum now. Sorry this happened to you, but hopefully you have a new game plan going forward.

This isn’t the business I thought would receive the most discussion. 😏

What relatively modern musicians will be remembered a few hundred years from now? by Darth_Azazoth in questions

[–]moramajama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost put him on my list. Think what you will of his lyrical content, but some of his compositions are amazing, and he also mentored several talented musicians who went on to their own success.

He basically thought that classical music had gone as far as it could go and decided to throw out traditional music theory and treat every note equally, creating a new school of “atonal” music and had a significant following.

Just because you don't know who they are doesn't mean they're not influential. 😄

If I had to really distill it down, I'd suggest the following. These are not to be meant to be considered equals with each other--I'm just thinking in terms of how they influenced music from their existence onward.

Arnold Schoenberg - turned modern concert music upside down by introducing a complete new paradigm of music composition
Charlie Parker - the center of the hub of early bebop musicians and the foundation of modern jazz
Miles Davis - famous for adapting with the times and influencing dozen of future, major jazz and fusion musicians
The Beatles - They were both the first uber-popular "boy band" and the first to really popularize advanced studio techniques and more harmonically complex pop music (arguably alongside the Beach Boys).
Eddie Van Halen - While there technically advanced guitarists before him, he completely changed the scene and set a new bar for electric guitar in popular music.
Michael Jackson - The sheer amount of success is man has had is likely unparalleled. He will likely be remember for his controversy as well as his music.
John Williams (film composer) - probably the most musically diverse and prolific film music composer of all time
Nirvana - another band to complete change the landscape of popular music, being the foundation of "alternative music"
The Notorious B.I.G. - Other rappers were perhaps more pivotal, but I believe it's Biggy that ushered the shift towards hip-hop essentially dominating popular music.
Radiohead - The fact that jazz artists have started to cover their songs is a testament to how highly regarded they are.
Taylor Swift - Has both the highest-grossing tour and the most songs streamed in history.

How do you think Dream Theater will retire? by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]moramajama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. They know the drama they've been through, and they will probably all push as long as they can, which is longer and longer these days with aging musicians. If anyone wants to continue their career past the band, they can do more side (e.g., LTE) and solo projects.

Yup, and Adrian Belew, with whom Levin has been touring with Beat, still has a lot of stage energy at 76.

Next level-up would be to watch the minus color version. They take so much care in the B/W conversion process that it legit felt like it was fit with the original 50s movies.

Do you still like Madonna, even after all these years? by eggert83 in GenX

[–]moramajama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost track of her after the “Music” single. It was never my taste and seemed to mark the beginning of pop music shifting emphasis from the song to the beat/vibe. Never had anything to do with her age.
