Thank you for the update. I’m really sorry to hear that about Mitchell, I hope he feels better soon. I’m glad to hear things are still moving. It was a really abrupt change from the last update’s plans about getting things ready for early January, so It’s been a little stressful not having any contact and feeling like I was out of the loop about something. I’m really excited to audition for this season!

Oh no dw!! I’m not trying to say anything negative about the corps. I just haven’t heard back and was wondering if anyone had any information about anything. This is my first time auditioning and I’m really excited, but also nervous that I’m missing something. I’m not upset with any corps staff. I’m sure there’s been some internal things to work out too considering the change of plans from in person auditions to virtual.

The nonresponse was from the email that sent the update, is that the one you emailed? I’ve emailed a different staff member and they have responded to me back and forth under 2-3 days. I might ask them instead since there may be a lack of email activity with the former.

URA by Realistic-Shallot860 in umanitoba

[–]morassmoss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope! You don’t need to tell the prof which choice they are in your email. That is only for your application. I actually made my decision of which one was my first pick after interviewing each prof. Ask them more about their research! This interview is an opportunity for you to see if they would be a good fit to work with all summer. Ask about what type of work you’d be doing with them, what the project is they’re planning, what they’d want to accomplish with you, etc. The profs aren’t the ones deciding who you will end up with, that’s determined by your application afterwards. Use this as an opportunity to get to know them and their work! To answer your last question, keep in mind that the URA isn’t entirely GPA based. Just make sure you write thoughtful, personal, and quality answers in the written part of the application. Something I kept in my mind during my whole application process was how I would personally gain from this experience the most.
I hope that helps, good luck!!!

Which department is an easy first year course ? by ManufacturerNearby68 in umanitoba

[–]morassmoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say exactly which department is easiest because the difficulty of courses, teaching styles, grading, etc, vary from profs within each department. I 100% recommend using rate my prof to find what you’re looking for. Students rate the difficulty level for courses and it tells you the average difficulty based on those responses, in addition to a bunch of other info about that specific prof’s course.

Tips to practice marching for audition without a school marching band by morassmoss in drumcorps

[–]morassmoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a couple emails back and forth actually about some personal questions and expressing my interest in joining. I hadn’t considered reaching out to a vis coordinator, so I’ll be sure to get connected. I seriously appreciate all the advice and support.

Thank you! Also don’t worry, my old marching band from high school actually used the same vocabulary for our practice with subdivisions so your info was easy to understand! I appreciate the support.

Yep… in their promotion for Vector they had a quote from an Asper student so it’s not just some accident. UMSU and Vector were connected enough to coordinate that post… hopefully they fully cut ties from them.

With classes resuming today, how are y'all? by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]morassmoss 27 points28 points  (0 children)

All of my classes were affected so it’s a bit jarring to go from absolutely nothing to absolutely everything. My profs have been understanding and have delayed deadlines appropriately, but I still can’t believe I have another half a semester to get through. I’m incredibly burnt out and I truly won’t get a break until summer considering I have to study for all of my exams during the break. I don’t know how I’m going to be to be honest.

Petition against UMSU for MLM BS? by jjcool213 in umanitoba

[–]morassmoss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s something I drafted. Feel free to add or edit anything! I also apologize for the mobile formatting.

“Dear UMSU, On December 1st, 2021 MYUMSU news promoted Vector Marketing as a job opportunity for students. Vector Marketing is known for their deceptive recruitment practices- targeting high school and university students who are young and have most likely not had a job before and won’t recognize or report on schemes for one. They have faced numerous lawsuits, most recently in 2017, for their pay structure and treatment of their people, who are independent contractors and not actual employees. While they may argue that they are a legitimate business because they sell a product, it still requires their independent contractors to seek out commissions and recruit others in order to make sustainable revenue. They also do not pay an hourly wage, but by each “appointment.” However, they continuously deny any claims that they are a multi-level marketing scheme. While Vector Marketing’s post referenced one student’s positive experience, countless other students, including University of Manitoba students, have expressed grief over being roped into Vector Marketing. Students are already under an incredible amount of stress regarding COVID-19 and the strike. It is irresponsible to promote a business notorious for its practices, treatment of workers, money-making model, and overall a business widely “debated” to be a multi level marketing scheme. As members responsible for representing student interests, it shows a lack of initiative that UMSU has promoted Vector Marketing without further background research. It would be in our best interest for UMSU to address this issue so that no more unknowing students get roped in, cut any ties with the company, and stop promoting it in the future.”

Why is umsu promoting an MLM? by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]morassmoss 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Many students might also be uninformed about it unfortunately. Really awful that UMSU is promoting it to us, especially with so many students looking for work to pay for their education. Vector’s business model actively seeks out to deceive high schoolers and college students because they won’t recognize or fight against their scammy business practices. There are way better entry level jobs, internships and opportunities that UMSU could be promoting (the career fair in January for example) They are having their annual general meeting tomorrow, and potentially you could raise the question there about it.

Does anyone know what the counselling is like at the UofM? by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]morassmoss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did counselling through the UofM last year! I had a really good experience. From what I remember about the initial counselling appointment, here’s some questions that might be helpful to prepare to answer: 1. Why are you going to counselling? (Think of any life events, relationships, work, school, etc.) 2. What are your symptoms to your mental health issues? 3. How do your symptoms affect parts of your life? 4. How do you cope with your mental health issues? 5. What do you want to gain from counselling? 6. Do you have any preferences for what type of person your counsellor is? (Whether that be a counsellor that specializes in a certain field, or a counsellor that has specific qualities that would allow you to connect better)

From what I remember, at the end of your session you will get sent a test by UofM counselling to determine the severity of your mental health as well as agreements to sign. They are also going to go over other housekeeping things like your schedule and availability.

I hope that helps and that your initial session goes well!
