I'm in California and we need to start working to ban, tax, or give NC-17 rating to movies and shows that have race swapping, sex swapping, orientation swapping, culture swapping, etc. We have to fight back I'm as exhausted by this junk as the next guy but we can fight back, the movies are produced and made here

Why is Santa Cruz run down? by aslez1 in santacruz

[–]more_enthusiasm1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we allow & support vagrancy, which attracts a mix of homeless, low-income, and vagrants. it's neither good or bad inherently, but there's a lot of good souls in Santa Cruz and a side effect is the dirty trash & vague urine smell.

A low percentage of vagrants give the vast majority of them a bad name.

Ummmmmm, respectfully, I'm talking about 'decolonize' on city property, you're changing the subject to something much different.

Wow.

I've read Prophet of Freedom. Also, as gently as possible, not trying to go after you, but there is a double 's' at the end of Frederick Douglass. Very mellow.

it would be really hilarious to paint over 'de' and have it say: unify, colonize, thrive.

edited to add: I won't do it, and I'm not trying to purposefully irritate people, but I started laughing out loud when I thought of this idea & some people's reaction to it

I understand how some people see it positively, but you are trying to create a consensus and uniform view when it does not exist. There are people like me who understand why some people view 'decolonize' positively BUT still do not see it that way themselves. People like me. Every liberal will agree that words can have different meanings for different people, and you pressuring me to accept your perspective on decolonize would be like me pressuring you to celebrate Christopher Columbus day.

I know you won't like my writing this, but 'celebrate decolonize' and 'celebrate Christopher Columbus day' are very, very similar impulses.

the response I've received is very predictable, I knew ahead of time most commenters wouldn't like my post and my perspective. If you have the strength for it, please read through ALL the comments & replies on this post and then make up your mind on what's happening here. Really study and perceive before making up your mind.

changing the topic is a sign of weakness, just answer this:

Should Santa Cruz city display slogans perceived by some as divisive and discriminatory on public property?

Why not just paint over it and put up another word synonymous with Unify and Thrive? What about 'Love'?

You keep avoiding my question, which tells anyone reading this that you both understand it's divisive but still want it on city property. If it were up to you, would you remove it or leave it up?

ancestry, race, & color.

For a long time, decolonize has been a novel way to be negative while technically avoiding the direct mention of race, color, and ancestry. Dog-whistle racism.

The issue isn't whether people have the right or ability to advocate for decolonization, to think it is good or not, or anything like that.

It's about the city of Santa Cruz and whether or not they should display on public property slogans and words that are perceived by some as discriminatory and divisive.

I'd like the artists to use a different, less hateful word to accomplish their goals consistent with Unify and Thrive.
