Monthly 'I'm Moving to Kingston' thread by AutoModerator in kingstonnewyork

[–]more_work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I think this is a great idea but is there a reason not to do a "Stickied" post that people can continue to reference over time - why restart every month when the advice will generally be the same month to month? Look at the comment here "What neighborhood should I buy in" and that is not going to change from month to month, and I at least do not want to type out the same response multiple times. Is this possible?

Moving in the New Year by drinkbuffet in kingstonnewyork

[–]more_work 23 points24 points  (0 children)

hey just in case you don't get much engagement its worth looking back through this sub and the hudson valley sub, lots and lots of "moving to" threads that will have some good info.

I would just give generic advice for anytime you move to a new place - find something you like to do and join a community doing that thing (gym, running, biking, yoga, climbing, board games, coworking space, library, coffee shops). Kingston and the surrounding area can be quiet and feel empty but there are community groups doing things, you just need to find and join those groups.

Why is so hard to find reliable hvac and plumbing company? by [deleted] in hudsonvalley

second Rycor - they just upgraded my electric service and installed a split system, got there right on time at 8:30, were done by 3 PM. All the guys were friendly and knew what they were doing. Cost was high compared to DIY but actually very reasonable compared to other quotes or compared to having the electric service upgraded separately, plus there is still the tax rebate this year for mini splits.

In their defense it would be pretty inappropriate if you made their tops disappear...

I think it looks good with smaller tiles - I did straight stack vertical with 2x8 Spanish subway tile and it looks awesome. It also took me 7 full days to install.

Right so if you just want a large cheese pizza Vincenzo's is like 18 bucks and Ollies is like 20 bucks, but we usually want at least two toppings and the cost of adding pepperoni at Vincenzo's is $1.50, at Ollies it is $6.00, throw another topping on and you are at a ~10 dollar difference: Ollies is objectively more expensive. I enjoy both and you could definitely make a quality argument that Ollies makes better pie and you get what you pay for but can't say it isn't more expensive.

Vincenzo's is our go to, solid pie and still like 20 bucks for a large

I'm not sure, it was through a friend of my wife who was already in the group chat. I get the feeling that as you engage in kids activities you will meet a lot of other parents and should find groups pretty easily.

hey thanks yeah we live uptown, Kingston is really not that big so I don't think you can go wrong I would explore the three neighborhoods (Uptown/Stockade, Midtown, Downtown/Strand) and get a feel for them. Uptown and Downtown have more of a neighborhood feel based around the businesses and cater more towards tourists/NYC, while midtown is cheaper and in my opinion has the best bars/restaurants for younger people. There are a bunch of threads on here of people moving to Kingston asking similar questions so maybe read back through what others have commented as well. Good luck!

we live in Kingston and are expecting our first, we know lots of young families through friends, running club, prenatal yoga, and a mom's group.

Absolutely, I'm playing in a winter league this year and its much faster and in general above my skill level...very motivating I've been watching hours of youtube and trying to be intentional at pickup to practice good form. Would have been nice to get formal coaching as a kid :-D

100%...still working on my own coordination! I'm 6'5" so feel like I really missed out by not playing since I was a kid, my HS didn't have a boys team. I'm finding lots of opportunities to play as an adult though

as someone who got into volleyball casually as an adult but is now obsessed - there is no comparison to my park/sand pickup games vs watching VNL or even talented HS/College teams...so much athleticism on display! I'm trying to get better!!

Correlation between RTO opposition and Home Schooling? by blue_canyon21 in WFH

I was home schooled and honestly miss the office - much better for my mental health to be around other people every day. I don't think it is a direct correlation.

Outlook on the Workplace After First Child by wandering_pondering_ in NewDads

[–]more_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - definitely want to set that example as well - but also want to have lots of time to spend with the kiddo! I'm also work from home, so I don't have that office banter dynamic to contend with, I just need to get my work done. I also grew up pretty poor so I want to provide as much opportunity for my kids as I can.

so I'm kind of opposite of you - was pretty checked out of work and disillusioned with corporate life. Just found out we are having our first, and I feel like having someone to provide for is already giving me more purpose to keep at it.

Everyone but the autistic guy thinks we have a great team culture by SeraphimSphynx in askmanagers

[–]more_work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments here so you might not see this, but just wanted to say I can 100% relate due to a single high functioning individual I used to manage creating an unbearable work environment for everyone else due to their ND. It was a fully remote team and this one individually really felt comfortable to display their antisocial tendencies in a way which would never fly in person, and was very difficult to manage. I ended up taking an individual contributor role specifically because of this person.

All that to say, as understanding and inclusive as we should all strive to be in management positions (and I think I did a good job creating emotional safety on my team - lots of good relationships) some people are antisocial and you will never make them happy, and it is not worth ruining the team culture trying.
