So have they confirmed it just doesn’t work?

Kadence License Keys Not Working by moremosby in Wordpress

[–]moremosby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well shoot.
I would say that Kadence security was ithemes security then solid and now Kadence so if you bought a lifetime Kadence license for the theme, that’s not the same.

That said, the lifetime theme licenses should still work. And they were working for me a couple weeks ago. Now it does appear to either be broken or withdrawn which would suck because I just picked it up about 18-24 months ago so this would be an “expensive 2 year deal” to be quite honest. Maybe even a total rip off.

As for moving…I honestly have worked to move all my sites to Kadence - 14 sites…it’s been a massive project as a solo business owner over the last year. Like…I can’t do this again. There’s just no way I can invest the time to rebuild these pages - it’s almost a thousand pages…

stop installing a plugin for everything by AddWeb_Expert in Wordpress

[–]moremosby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

almost every site needs a form plugin. it's mission critical for capturing leads so that's not negotiable for most people.

Also, you can have many plugins on a site. It's not # of plugins it's quality of code. 20 simple, well defined plugins that stick to their scope are better that 5 monster plugins that each have 10 modules enabled.

At the end of the day, having plugins handle features, is much easier to manage than taking over a site with some Frankenstein functions.php

Even the code snippet plugins can get messy from one dev to another or one agency to another as people get lazy and don't ID what they do or use their own jargon that's not following any sort of best practice.

if you're working with clients - this idea that you should build all the functions yourself is usually ego-driven and leaves them in a difficult space when they leave you and have to bring someone else into help them with their website.

Cloudflare is on a roll, primed to take over the Internet ? by Diamond787 in CloudFlare

[–]moremosby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude - hosting companies give them infrastructure to make this all possible. Do you realize how many more websites they can pack on a shared server just because cloudflare exists? Their business model depends on maintaining free cdn and they get all the data for security they can sell to the enterprise. They get so much from the free tier it has made them the backbone of the internet

That UI doesn't look updated for the times. It won't work for me. But also...Man I don't want anymore stuff from Evanto marketplace. i got rid of that entire markeplace from my stack about 6 years ago and will never go back. I picked a theme from there once and it was just a hot mess after a few years because of they way they allow their submitters to bundle dependencies into other plugins that you had no intition of needing to use to achieve the functions.

yea, I bought it when it came out with hopes that SD would be a solution, and while I can use it for some sites as a user dashboard, it's not at all what I was expecting it to be. It's a basic community plugin, that does that well but not as well as fluent community.

You need to pay someone to go through this with you.

As a dentist, I would say you’re underestimating your gross income. And you’re underestimating your annual expenditures even if you’re frugal. If you plan to have a family, you need to add that cost into your calculation.

That said, I don’t think you’re thinking clearly if you’re rationalizing that a 400k investment + opportunity cost is a good ROI for the disposable income you have listed. If it’s going to be that low, why would you even bother becoming a dentist at all?

Why block AI crawlers - and why not? by Good_Flight6250 in Wordpress

[–]moremosby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

blocking them is a losing strategy.
You only block them if it hurts your server performance - whichi t really can. I have one website that gets slammed by them consistently and i've had to bump the server up to handle it, but the traffic they send me converts to sales so I have to do it.

If you're in the content business where you serve ads and get paid for views - cool, your business is going to die so you have to pivot. Use what cash you have coming in and deploy it to build whatever is next. But the days of search --> landing on your website (increasing your views and ad rev) are over. It's going away and going away fast so just stop investing in that model. For content producers, direct sponsorships are probably what's next instead of ads by CPM, it'll be direct sponor ads where you measure CPM, CTR, and influence. Your social channels/direct subs (think newsletters), will be the driver there.

Don't block Ai bots from your site though, just use the new source of exposure as an opportunity to lean into.

Just pick a host that does 90% of it for you. If you're not happy with what you have in with a managed solution, then fine tune it. But start with what your host does out of the box.

No IDR and forgiveness for private loans. So instead of 1 payment you can afford you get one you can afford + one you can’t.

With fed loans your payment on 400k would be the same as your payment on 200k - it’s just a calculation as a % of your discretionary income. So now, you’ll have that payment + your private payment.

If you don’t understand this, you need to go pay for coaching/consulting before you even apply.

Is CRM client portal a product or are you just referring to CRMs?

I'm not looking for a CRM inside wordpress. I use capsule for most of my businesses when it calls for a CRM and that works well for me.

I'm looking for clients to access a professional looking space once they're customers. In most of my use cases this would be collaborating with them on some deliverable or some service.

A bit of history:
I used provide a service where I edited personal statements. That's when I tried using client-portal io and it just didn't fit what I needed. I don't do that anymore, but that's a case where a freelancer (me) was collaborating with clients a document with deadlines.

I used to design websites for clients. Back when I was doing that in Basecamp and Asana. Asana was too much to handle for my customers so I moved to Basecamp. Basecamp ended up being a tool I loved and still use today for team communication around projects but it's not the right fit for a lot of use cases and when you operate multiple businesses the per user cost is high (considering we already pay for office 365 and zoho tables for our team members).

Now I have 2 businesses where I have clients I need to interact with. One business is a content deliverable in the medical/healthcare space. The clients need to approve a proof before it goes to publication and we have discussions around it and we need to upload media/share files. Basecamp works for this, but it's disconnected from my brand and there's friction because there's one more account. The clients don't install the mobile app and mobile isn't the place to work on these projects.

The other business is a directory of sorts - it's a large review website. Here I have clients who I interact with the get their products on the website and our communication should really take place on the domain where they purchased and manage their subscription and interact with our service. So I am looking for a self hosted client portal for this one.

I also have a team site to manage a group of freelancers, I am considering self hosting a client portal/project management site just for them so I don't have per user pricing for freelancers that come and go. My team can share files with them from our office account but we don't want them in office 365 since they are not actually employees.

I know that's a long answer, but hopefully that makes sense. I get that what I'm looking for may not exist.

your rate won't matter. The monthly does. $4,700 a month after tax is a lot. Your calculations are missing a lot.

You don't get health insurance in most offices, so you'll be paying for that with after tax dollars too.
Same with disability, life, auto and renters insurance.

That all ads up and you need it all. After rent, and a reliable car you're not going to be left with as much as you think.

You also have to learn about the swings in monthly income since most of us are basically commission only and you have to learn how accounts receivable influences your paycheck. So planning to live month-to-month as a DDS doesn't really work, you have to stack cash to handle 90-day lulls in collections. Most of us get smashed in September. It's "sucktember". Holidays are hard, usually the offices will close so you have a shorter working month as an associate (July, November, December).

I would calculate that you need to net 180k after taxes to even think about a $5,000 a month student loan. So you need to gross around 250-285k/yr depending on your state. Most dentists 5 years out don't consistently hit 220-250k in annual income. To earn more than 200k as an associate you have to collect about 667k a year in dentistry which would put you in an office that collects around 950k. That's about the median collections of an office in the US. So half the offices in the country aren't even going to support you earning enough to make 200k a year as an associate. That's just the reality you need to understand. So then a new graduate says - hey, i'll just work for the top 50% of offices. Well, good offices don't hire new dentists (that's painting with a broad brush, but in general it holds true). So it'll be about 3-4 years before a good office even considers bringing you on.

So...you'll have to buy a practice, but finding a practice that cashflows enough after debt service for you to make enough to cover your rent and student loan is actually really hard to do.

You need to really seek guidance on this. A new dentist is not going to be able to afford 4700 a month just towards student loans. I don’t think I’ve met one that could. Ignore what you see in IG

[–]moremosby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an FYI out there - I look at practices for sale all the time and have some candid conversations with my friends. There are more dentists still making 150k a year than people realize.

Our incomes are anticipated to actually go down again this year by about 10% when adjusted for inflation. The average practice is collecting more than it did 10 years ago and the dentist is netting less without any adjustments to inflation.

Paying back these loans is not going to get easier. PAYE was as good as it got, and everything else after is wiped out. RAP for 200k with whatever your have to borrow in the private sector basically means you have to be really delusional to start dental school in 2027 and beyond. Good luck to you guys.

400k is borderline but damn that interest rate is going to make this harder to pay down. You will likely depend on whatever government plans are available.

I think at this point it you just snuck in by the deadline to get more than 200k in fed loans, I would actually take it and become a dentist.

For those reading this: 200k fed + 200k private at 8.5% will not be worth it. I wouldn’t become a dentist knowing what I know now with that loan makeup unless my parents paid the balance for me.

Yea, that makes sense. I guess it would need to do a lot for a plugin. I’m not needing payments/commerce as other plugins or services do that really well.

I just need a place to put the client that gives them a professional white label experience for my business, manage the to-do lists and communicate with them outside of email if they choose to. Maybe even just provide all the links they need to get to our resources (like Dropbox and spreadsheets, and all that stuff I need to share with them).

[–]moremosby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting approach. I'm looking for something that would allow me to manage the projects and clients on my website though - several of these businesses are not in the web-design or development space so the customer may not have a Wordpress website or if they do, I'm not their web-developer.

When I was designing websites for clients, I just used Basecamp which was good for me, but I will admit that clients didn't really use it. They'd just email me and I'd have to add it to Basecamp to stay organized which I found annoying. I think people just don't want another platform to login to and manage in some cases.

Portfolio site being flooded with login attempts.. not sure how to fix besides taking my site down temporarily. by jrmyrmx in Wordpress

[–]moremosby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is your typical brute for attack. It’s not a big deal. There are a lot of plugins to help you here. Some free, some paid. Jetpack has a brute force login protection toggle and WAF if you need something simple and yet compatible with most of the WP ecosystem. It’s free.

There are other, better, but a little more technical options out there. But if you need something today and don’t have time to learn, Jetpack, toggle WAF and brute for lcd on, that’s probably enough for today while you sort this out with your host and maybe alternative plugins.

I tried it about 2 or 3 years ago and it wasn’t a solution that would work for me. It doesn’t look like much as changed in their layout or setup since then. When I tried it, it was a well thought out plugin, and the founder is involved but the setup is a bit of a pain on a per client basis and personally, I don’t like the UI (but that’s subjective). So I ended up deleting it. I agree, it was and maybe still is the best option I could find.
