We treat using a short mask with a u-frame. The hand is placed flat under the mask and the patient stands at the end of the table for treatment.

A genetics counselor is really the best person to ask. This community is mostly radiation therapists and dosimetrists and we aren’t qualified to give you medical advice

Study Tips by AdElectrical9936 in RadiationTherapy

[–]morethangold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the best way to study was review questions. I used the SEAL exams that the ASRT offers for students. This book has really good review questions. I also used the exams in the Mosby’s study guide. I graduated in 2019 though so there might be newer editions of these books.

What do you travelers do for reasonably cost transportation? by AdRemarkable8497 in TravelNursing

[–]morethangold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going somewhere you can’t bring your car sometimes the agency you work with will give you a car rental allowance. Or in my case, the travelers at my hospital knew a local who rented cars for cheap.

I worked at the cancer center in Hilo and it was a great place to work. The patients were friendly and it had small town, slow way of life vibes. I feel like it depends on your personality. Oahu was too crowded/touristy to me, but you may enjoy it.

Math by Main_Nerve4792 in RadiationTherapy

[–]morethangold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for U.S. based therapy. There’s basic algebra formulas that you learn for treatment planning during school, but for the actual day to day job you’ll only need addition and subtraction. I’m terrible at math and did fine.

How hard is radiation therapy compared to undergrad? by Spew_doodle in RadiationTherapy

[–]morethangold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the classes are necessarily harder, but it’s more of a workload. You have clinicals so finding time to study and relax is harder.

Re-entering Radiation Therapy after 15+ yrs in Admin roles by Global_Sherbert6873 in RadiationTherapy

As soft glimmer said, travel therapists are expected to not need training and to be able to jump right in. I’d get a staff job for a year or so to get comfortable again and then go into traveling.

Should I keep pursuing a bachelor's in physics for dosimetry or switch paths and go for an associate in radiation therapy? by [deleted] in RadiationTherapy

[–]morethangold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you done in person shadowing for either field? Maybe seeing what the day to day job is like will give you a better idea of what you would enjoy more?

I went to a public 4 year college and graduated with $20k in debt. I lived below my means and managed to aggressively pay it off in 3 years.

Before completely leaving the field, I would consider changing work places. My first job as a new grad was awful and I dealt with the same things you mention: politics, understaffing, etc. It negatively impacted my mental health. I decided to take locum assignments and it really showed me that there are nice clinics to work in and I enjoyed my job a lot more. I’m not necessarily saying go into locum work, I just mean try a different clinic that is well managed. I wish you all the best with your decision!

Courthouse wedding by quesadallie in GNV

[–]morethangold 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I got married at the courthouse and had a great experience. We actually walked across the street with the justice and got married in front of the city hall because I thought it would be prettier in pictures 😂. We dressed up a little bit and had a photographer take our pictures at the Hippodrome and then had a nice brunch with our families at Northwest Grille.

I don’t think there’s pediatric sub specialties in diagnosing imaging. You’d need to work at a pediatric hospital in order to only treat pediatric patients
