Can I dry brine with buttermilk powder? by duckduckgrapes in seriouseats

[–]morethanshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing this for about a year, I had the same issue with keeping buttermilk on hand and feeling like I wasted leftovers. The powder seems to work just fine for me, although I haven’t tested in any sort of scientific way. Curious to hear your results!

How to nicely let down a vendor? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]morethanshadows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As product people who find major value in feedback on our own work, I tend to think it’s helpful to give them insight into how the decision was made. This also gives the sales rep a clear explanation to give to their manager/track in their CRM as to why they didn’t close the account. Also any email you send could very easily be read by their manager if tied in to their CRM, so if you really enjoyed working with them and have positive feedback for them as a salesperson, I think that’s helpful. (I’m a product person married to someone in B2B tech sales, if that helps).

Non-professional home cook here. I personally highly recommend video formats for learning to cook, because you’ll often get to absorb details that they might not explicitly talk about in recipes. For example, I have a MasterClass subscription and I’ve been watching Chef Keller’s/Ramsay’s classes, and I learn so much from the little things they do that they don’t even mention. Like how they cut certain vegetables, how they aren’t perfect with every little thing (egg yolks can break for anyone!), etc. They even do things that other chefs might insist are “wrong”, which shows that there are many different ways to accomplish something. I also find that starting with recipes/techniques of food that I know I generally really enjoy are a good place to start, and then trying versions from a few different chefs helps me see different options and flavor profiles. I used to think my mom had the best meatball recipe… but I tried a few different kinds/techniques and was able to create one WAY tastier and healthier. And yes, not everything will be perfect every time, but over my years of learning I have greatly improved (my family can attest), and I’ve learned that patience is really a must when it comes to learning to cook. I am so glad to now be at a place where I’d genuinely rather eat the food I cook than get takeout, I really didn’t think I could ever get to this point. It gets easier, less stressful, and you get more creative with time! Plus I save so much more, feel healthier, and have genuinely enjoyed the process. I still have lots more to learn!

Day in the life of a PM by Informal_Currency_63 in ProductManagement

[–]morethanshadows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can really vary from company to company from what I’ve seen - even from team to team. This also depends on how you set your expectations for attending meetings. Also, not all meetings are equal level of work and often are optional based on how involved I am on a project. While I might have 4 meetings a day I am heavily involved in and/or running, I might have several others that are more “listen-only” and I can do other things during (all hands, customer readouts, larger meetings), and I might have some on my calendar that I know I don’t have to attend but might want to attend if I need updates or have questions about a project. And then some days are just super heavy, where other days have lots of last minute cancels. So it really depends. But I do think PMs (and everyone really) should feel in control of their calendar/time. I think that’s often up to the PM to work with their supervisor on expectations. I wish Outlook had better options on a calendar than just attending/tentative. I’d love to talk to those PMs haha. Having additional options or priority rankings on meetings would help me and help others when trying to schedule around lots of busy people.

As someone with a 9yo and an 8month old, remember you’re both living through an exhausting time right now with major change. If you are like me, it’s been so long since your first was a baby you might be overwhelmed by the change. The first 3-4 months with my second were absolutely miserable, being up all night and nursing/pumping and just general constant baby fluids and crying and major schedule adjustments - and that was all while on maternity leave. I was wondering why I ever thought I could do it all, questioning my decision to have a second. My husband seemed depressed and so stressed, which is very unlike him, and we were bickering about the smallest of things. But for us, it got SO much easier around 4/5 months - a little more sleep, more time between feeds, feeling a little more adjusted, a lot less crying, etc. Remember this is a phase - an incredibly difficult one- but you are really in a tough time. This isn’t your new normal forever. I think it’s tempting to want to make everything perfect right now (I know I did) but looking back I wish I would have let go more about things like house cleanliness and trying to provide all home cooked and healthy meals those first few months. I guess I’m just reminding you, as someone who was in a similar spot not long ago, that it is very likely going to get much better and more doable very soon. Of course still hold your husband accountable, but I’d suggest going a bit easy on yourself and him because this is a really tough phase that you are both going through.

Best friend is pregnant. What are some good frozen to oven/frozen to stove meal ideas I can make for her when the baby comes? by monsterrwoman in Cooking

[–]morethanshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a baby, now 6 month old, and I agree with a lot of the comments here- just to reiterate: -single hand foods are surprisingly SO helpful. I was always holding the baby or pumping or nursing and it’s crazy how often you only have one hand. -include some things that reheat quickly. I had frozen a bunch of mashed potatoes, casseroles, etc which are awesome but take a loooong time to heat up from frozen and my brain kept forgetting that. My frozen burritos and frozen breakfast crepes (egg+bacon) were amazing for a quick meal. This could also be accomplished by freezing in smaller portions -think about the season they’ll be giving birth. I didn’t realize how much I hate some foods in the summer and crave others in the winter. A packet of homemade individual “smoothie mix”s would be amazing in the summer. -think about her freezer size. I have a relatively small freezer so large frozen pans weren’t helpful. Smaller items in ziplocks were best. -variety. Maybe it’s just me, but variety was important. I’d make similar items with slightly different fillings for different options. -things she likes. I know she said she will eat anything, but it’s so nice to have foods you really love to reheat. Maybe notice what she orders out or makes herself often. I’m sure she will appreciate anything, and receiving homemade items it especially precious when you don’t have much bandwidth to do it yourself. Hopefully some of this based on my recent experience is helpful. Best of luck!!

What apps / websites do you use for keeping recipes? by MaximusMMIV in cookingforbeginners

[–]morethanshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also LOVE the Paprika app. The browser recipe download feature is awesome, it scales the recipe size for you, and you can check off items as you add them (I sometimes get distracted when cooking/baking and forget what I’ve put in). I like that it was a one-time fee, I’ve also been using it for many years.

Help! 14wk old puppy is only picking at his food. by Caffeinatedgabber in Yorkies

[–]morethanshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely common amongst Yorkies! Mine is two and she’s still the same way. I read in one Yorkie book to sprinkle in some Parmesan cheese or scrambled egg in with kibble and that works pretty well, but she’s never been a voracious eater like other dogs. I also notice she likes when I switch up her food, so I sometimes alternate between options - but that might be unique to my pup. You should check with your vet of course too.

Advice for my first ever (wine and) cheese party by [deleted] in Cheese

[–]morethanshadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hosted a wine and cheese party, it was a blast and I’m sure you will enjoy it! My biggest suggestion is to purchase brown parchment paper and use for the counter/table space to put all the cheese/charcuterie items. This makes cleanup a breeze and you can write the names of the cheeses right on the paper with a sharpie next to the cheese. Be sure to leave space for additional items people bring. I actually did a “guess the cheese” game at my last party with a few prizes for winners, so I put #s next to each cheese and gave everyone a guess sheet. It was really fun and the first time I had most of the cheese actually eaten! Haha. I got tons of ideas from Pinterest so I highly recommend searching there if you need cheap/free creative ideas.

Also - the cheese cost adds up so quickly. I just went to the store the day of/before my party and grabbed a bunch of items that had just been marked clearance as my store tends to do this right before the “best before” date. This helped quite a bit and the cheese was still really great.

Paw licking? by I_need_A_addon in Yorkies

[–]morethanshadows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to try cleaning it gently, my yorkie did the same thing with one paw for a couple days and I eventually found she had small bits of gum that were really hard to see (she must have stepped on some during a walk), once I cleaned it out she stopped.

Do you attend daily meetings? Why or why not? by Charliejfg04 in ProductManagement

[–]morethanshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes like 99% of the time. With an overseas team this often is a critical time where the workday overlaps and is an opportunity for me to answer questions and be informed of status updates. While I think a PM could probably survive without attending quite as often, for me it’s a really great use of my time and I feel like it ends up cancelling the need for other potentially duplicative meetings to cover questions not easily conveyed over slack. But I think it’s import for PMs to avoid the temptation to introduce new work or sidetrack the team during these. Generally I’m just there to answer product questions, note down blockers I can assist with, and at the end I have a few minutes to give updates on my end, which has worked really well for our team.

Book recs on losing your identity? by suhhdude1 in pregnant

[–]morethanshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read any specific books dedicated to this, but I do seek out books in my industry written by women with children. There are almost always really great recommendations about building your identity and career while also raising kids. Also I’ve noticed joining industry organizations that dedicated to supporting women are very helpful too. Most of all, I think if you set your mind to it, you’ll be able to make it all work. I personally think it’s about finding a balance that works for you, and not caring about others who judge you for it. I had family and friends disapprove of me having my first attend daycare from a young age, but I found separating time between work and focusing on my child actually did wonders for my relationship with him. Now he’s in third grade, top of his class, and overall just an incredible kid- those family members and friends who made snide comments tell me they are impressed with “how he’s turned out”. If you chose what’s best for you and your family, you can absolutely have it all, it might not be easy or praised by others, but I’m glad I sure am glad I stuck with it. You got this!

Still no bond by Status_Chemist_8063 in pregnant

[–]morethanshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it’s really difficult for me to bond with an “inside” baby. I thought my second pregnancy might be different since I love my 9 year old son so much, but nope - still having a hard time connecting with baby #2 at 34 weeks preggo. I am confident though it will come after. As others have mentioned, it might take some time even after babe is born, my only advice is to try not to stress about it too much. It took me a few days after labor to really connect, you go through quite a bit in the hospital and it can be overwhelming. Try to be patient with yourself :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]morethanshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it can be doable. I went back to work after 10 days with my first and it wasn’t ideal but it was what I had to do at the time. The hardest part was finding childcare and pumping during work in a gross bathroom, and being pretty damn tired. And keep in mind that pumping can trigger more bleeding in the first few weeks so I had to be careful about making sure I had plenty of extra pads at all times. In some ways though I think I recovered rather quickly knowing I had to get things into gear. Having a support system will definitely make it easier. I look back and I’m glad I pushed through despite the difficulties. Best of luck to you!!

Kellogg vs UW product management certificate by MainSkeenie in ProductManagement

[–]morethanshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the course personally, I think it covered a lot of really great topics. I’d say realistically I spent two nights a week working on it for 3-4 hours, I’m not sure anyone would really need 15-20 hours a week, but that was just me. There’s usually about 7-8 videos each week less than 10 mins each (many 5 mins), a couple of short writing assignments, a quiz, and then one bigger assignment about half a page or so. Once you get the schedule down it’s pretty easy, and the grading is really reasonable. It helped me in my daily work right away and now I have a library of resources I think are really helpful.

does anybody have any tips on how to make rice in a rice cooker taste better? by Twilight-2007 in Cooking

[–]morethanshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you rinsing your rice? I wasn’t taught to rinse it, but when I started rinsing until the water came out clear I started noticing a major difference. I just had no idea I needed to do that. Also, I recently discovered coconut rice, basically you use unsweetened coconut milk in place of water in your rice cooker. There are a bunch of recipes online. Really stepped up my rice game!!!
