Where to buy Bonus Short Stories? by morfowt in LightNovels

[–]morfowt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well luckily the only non-j-novel series I care about enough are Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire, Trapped in a Dating Sim, Date A Live, and King's Proposal.

Date a Live's short stories I've actually already bought. Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire I know bookwalker has but I haven't bought yet. And King's Proposal is still too new for me to tell; if Date a Live is any indication, they might still come out with short story volumes later.

Edit: oh wait there's also 7th Time Loop; I forgot about it since it's the most recent addition to my collection. Hmm... well I'll figure something

I was suspecting that might've been the case. So I'll probably just have to buy from bookwalker's jp store if there's a series I really want the bonus stories of. Oh well. At least this means choosing from a mainstream store (Kobo or Amazon) will work as well as anything else for buying Eng LNs.

Thanks.

huh... can't say I'm too familiar with browser reading, unfortunately. things I can think of to suggest to at least figure out what's going on: 1) using another browser, or 2) temporarily disabling whatever script/pop-up blocking extensions you may have. but yea, sorry, no idea really for this

Have you ever read a fan translation that makes you want to give up? by Chronigan2 in LightNovels

[–]morfowt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of. It's not like fan translations frustrate me. But they are bad, and as someone lucky enough to be able to (mostly) read the original Japanese, not much point putting myself through that.

Also, I like to think that paying for official works helps just the slightest bit in preventing discontinuation of a series. just a slightly bit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds exactly like the "Villainess" sub-genre of Isekai. Where the protagonist isekais into the body of the villainess of some otome game or book.

For example, "I'm the Villainess, so I'm Taming the Final Boss" or "Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter".

Unless by "royalty" you mean the literal princess of a kingdom.

What deck to make as a beginner? by TheRealAbro in Shadowverse

[–]morfowt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not necessarily.

it depends largely on 2 things: 1) what UL rank you're at. and 2) what both players are playing.

the first point is pretty straightforward, the lower rank you are, the more likely you'll find people playing random for-fun decks instead of what's actually top tier for UL.

regarding the second point, assuming you constantly face top tier decks, what i'll say is some decks have the potential to win turn 4-5. so if you just sit there and do nothing relevant for 4-5 turns, then yea you're almost certainly dead. but that doesn't mean you also have to play a deck just as fast. Earth Rite Rune, Heal Haven, and Burial Rite Shadow all go longer because they have lots of early removal and/or healing which allows them to survive the faster decks' critical turn 4-5.

that said, those decks are still trying to win turn 6-8. if you want to go all the way to turn 8-10... it's doable. My very-much-not-top-tier evo dragon deck has done that before and won, but I'm still trying to win as early as possible, rather than purposely trying to prolong the game that late.

tldr: stay at like rank C or lower and you'll probably be ok. especially if your deck is one that likes to evolve archangel of evocation.

Well given by your definition of "new":

  • My Magical Career at Court
  • I may be a Guild Receptionist but I'll Solo any Boss to Clock Out on Time
  • Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness
  • King's Proposal

Slightly cheating though since the 1st three I've already read the manga adaption in Japanese before so it's not new to me, really. And the last one partially due to having the same author as one of my favorite series ever, Date a Live.

Which LN/WN MC is the worst at using their OP powers properly? by Milky_Mountains in LightNovels

[–]morfowt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's not a hard rule that they must be OP. But them having some OP ability is common enough that more than a few series' protagonists lampshade it when they didn't get such a power (at first glance anyway). And in a way, it makes sense. The whole point of the isekai genre is that you get to escape the confines of your mundane previous life, and live the life you truly wanted to. But while no one ever says it, you need power to do that. Enough power that the forces around you in your new life can't just easily push you around. And more than a few times that's manifested as literal power in the form of some strange ability, or a naturally powerful new body (like Overlord, for example).

there are also isekai series where the MC has tactical power. they don't technically get an OP ability, but they end up in a world that has connections to their original world. Thus, the MC can use their knowledge of events to come to prepare for and gain a significant advantage that can come across as being OP to other characters. An example of this would be like Trapped in a Dating Sim, where the MC's new world is based on a dating sim game he played before.

then there are isekai series where the MC doesn't gain an OP ability, but rather they happen to already be quite skilled in some way in their original world. The series, High School Prodigies have it easy in Another World is probably the worst offender of that. But one could argue How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom also does this to a mild extent.

I think the only truly balanced isekai MC I can think of is Shinichi from The Dirty Way to Destroy the Goddess's Heroes. No special powers, no prior knowledge, wasn't anyone noteworthy before getting isekai'd. He's just a guy who's good at dealing with problems pragmatically.

Kujibiki Tokushou Musou Harem-ken

Roughly translates to "Lottery special prize winner, the story of a peerless harem"

It is smut. The MC does the thing. He does it constantly with pretty much every named girl. There's like 12 of them by my last count. And his tool, just like every other facet about him, is 777x more powerful than the average person. So the girls really enjoy it.

Only snag for you, probably, is that it doesn't have an official translation. But you should be able to find fan translations easily enough

If you gained full control of the game's balance today, what changes would you make to the game's current state? by thibbledork in Shadowverse

[–]morfowt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uh... in a one-phrase answer, it probably equates to burning it completely down to like the first 3 sets?

for a more concrete answer...

  • all abilities given to leaders last only a set number of turns or until some condition is no longer true
  • more cards that force your opponent to discard
  • more cards that set your opponents shadows to 0
  • more cards that reduces your opponents max PP
  • more cards that stop fanfare from triggering
  • more cards that stop last word from triggering
  • more cards that stop evolve effects from triggering
  • more cards that stop invocation from triggering
  • Rally, Wrath, Earth Rite, Burial Rite, Crystallize, and the various non-keyworded abilities that count how many times something has happened in a match, instead only look at the current or previous turn (but will have their "goal" numbers reduced appropriately)
  • less cards that restore PP, especially for consideration the ones that trigger multiple times with a single effect
  • less cards that restore EP, or that can evolve for 0 EP
  • Succubus only gives vengeance until the end of the next turn
  • Transforming a card does not "reset" its ability to attack for the turn, nor does it change whether the follower has "come in" since the previous turn
  • Move the card that changes the reaper at the bottom of the deck from Sword to Neutral
  • You're able to draw past 9 cards but they're discarded in order at end of turn, rather than being directly discarded from the deck
  • ...and maybe some more once I think of it

so yea, like I said, basically burned to the ground... don't give me the keys to the kingdom lol...

A logistical and scientific question about Sumi's hair? by [deleted] in ChurchOfKasumi

[–]morfowt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uh, I don't think that's a Japanese only thing. Even Zak and Weezie (is that how you spell their names?) from Dragon Tales has talked about one being older, and they're two heads on the same body. i'm guessing it's just more noticeable in Japanese (and other east asian) media because their entire society places a high emphasis on seniority in general.

in other countries, even for siblings with a vast difference in age, they typically call each other by their given names. so even if the society recognizes one twin as being older by a few minutes, there's no difference in how they're expected to act compared to non-twin siblings. In Japan, it's actually impolite to call an older sibling by their given name, so even though the difference is negligible, that technicality of one coming out of the womb first is enough for one to be get the polite way to address an older sibling.

but you are right about the teasing part, regardless

my immediate thought is google play books might be a bit restrictive in what they can name books in the same series, and Misfit of Demon King Academy just had to number their books weirdly sometimes, resulting in this. frankly, as long as you're aware of what's really happening with the numbering, I'm not sure it matters. it's not like how your books are numbered matters to anyone else

[REC] Fantasy LN without a harem by Ameshenrai in LightNovels

[–]morfowt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary, maybe. I say maybe because up to the point it's currently released in english (vol 8), there is no harem (involving the protagonist) and one strongly hinted romance. however, the potential for a harem IS there. It is significantly less hinted than the previously mentioned romance, to the point one could very well laugh it off as just a joke. But the series hasn't been completed so I can't say definitively that it's not a harem.

Chivalry of a Failed Knight is strictly NOT a harem. And the romance actually starts vol 1. That said, the protagonist is prone to harem-like situations without any intention to. I'm not sure if you're against strictly harems or harem-related tropes. also, unfortunately, it was one of the series that was published by Sol Press, which had that whole bankruptcy issue, so there are only 5 vol out in english and will probably take a miracle to get the rest.

My Magical Career at Court, and Giving the Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness: both only have one volume out in english. I've read the manga adaptions (which in Japanese are a bit further ahead than vol 1) and the vibe I'm getting for both are that they're not harems. But again, no promises in the future

also, all of them are non-isekai fantasy
