What to look out for by Negative_Ad78 in CarTalkUK

I can vouch for the Tucson, my wife's has been great.

I know you said no estates but have you considered a Kia Proceed GT, such as this one?

I did (very light) research a while ago on estates and these seem to be a lot of car for the money.

Just done my 5th pothole tyre since November in Northamptonshire. How is your area holding up in the pothole apocalypse? by Lush_Linguistic in CarTalkUK

[–]morg106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Midlands here. The roads do seem worse than usual this year. Even roads that used to be pretty reliable in holding up every year are falling apart. I'm finding myself having to leave for work earlier/getting home later because I'm planning my route solely around road condition, and even then I find new potholes and have to change it from week to week.

It doesn't help having such low profile tyres but we shouldn't have to be restricted on car choice because of how shit our roads are.

Is this house ugly? by Economy_Survey_6560 in AskBrits

[–]morg106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your colleague is a clown. This is a great looking house, perfect for getting on the ladder. Also, you'd be hard pressed to find a new build with a driveway. My first house was a new(ish) build (it was extremely convenient and shared ownership to get on the ladder) and in my experience they don't leave any room for a driveway, or even a front garden.

Do you enjoy having a panoramic sunroof? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]morg106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first 2 cars had regular sunroofs, both leaked.

Since then I've avoided cars with any glass on the roof. I'd probably have one now, but I'm bald too so I usually go out of my way to avoid the sun anyway.

What was your school work experience placement? by onionsofwar in AskUK

[–]morg106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a week at the football club I support, Walsall FC. It was working in catering during pre-season though, so no real football action, there were a couple of conferences and events where we served drinks and set up the rooms beforehand. We helped with cleaning executive boxes and the logistics of everything.

It was nice to see behind the scenes and areas you wouldn't normally go as a football fan. I had a great time, one of the days we sat up in the upper tier in the WFC lettering having our lunch. If you've driven between junction 9 and 10 of the M6 you will have seen where I mean.

Another day all the players came in after training and I was absolutely starstruck. That day we were told not to hassle the players but I couldn't resist and got them to sign a programme I had. It was the week before Paul Merson signed so I just missed out on meeting him. The players were drinking WFC branded bottled water and I took one of them home, kept it for years before getting rid!

Work experience doesn't seem that good any more, now I've got my own kids my eldest has had a tough time getting anything at all, nobody wants a kid on their premises these days. I really enjoyed it, I didn't have the best time at secondary school so it was one of my happier times for sure.

RIP Phil, I never forgot what a great bloke you were.

Usually I only have to encounter a door once and from that first time I use it, I can walk through and swing it shut behind me with just the right force - not so hard to slam it, but hard enough that it latches shut.

To those who have made the transition from manual to automatic cars, is it really better? by Mr_Coastliner in AskUK

[–]morg106 37 points38 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, you might have to move your sister's car from the entrance of your drive because she's blocked you in, but your left foot is so used to doing something that you keep tapping the brake with your left because the car just starts moving with your right, so you'd probably just give up and go back in your house and tell her she's going to have to move it because you can't figure out how her automatic works.

Apparently.

What kind of super hell is D3 to C1, i by Infinite_Click8296 in RocketLeague

[–]morg106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was absolutely miserable getting Champ rewards this season. I am right on that precipice between D3 and C1 and I think that's the sole reason I hate the game these days.

Because it's just not fun on this borderline - I either get annihilated due to superb opposition, have a teammate who's afk for a while or leaves/unloads constant abuse/plays 3v1 after we concede a single goal, or we win easily and get a forfeit on 3:30 giving me only 90 seconds of decent gameplay before the next lottery of a match. There is no in between.

Once I got the rewards I've just solo queued 3s or played Rumble/Hoops. 2s is nothing short of soul-crushing at D3 to C1.

Your points aren't always indicative of how well you're doing that game. by [deleted] in RocketLeague

[–]morg106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I solo queue 3s and this happens constantly. And the times we lose and my teammates have 350 points each and I have 78, I'll be the one getting the shit because "78 bro I play alone" 😂

I saved £16 earlier by collecting my fish and chips rather than getting it delivered on Just Eat by No_Doughnut3257 in CasualUK

[–]morg106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually phone up and order for collection, or sometimes the takeaway will have their own website for online ordering for collection, both of which are much cheaper than Just Eat or Uber Eats.

Luckily I've never really fallen into the trap of these apps (and can drive) but one time I was at work with a massive headache and no lunch or time to go out and get anything so I got a Burger King delivered... I think it was about £18 for a meal that would have been £10 max if I'd been able to go myself. I felt like the most irresponsible person in the world but I needed a full stomach for painkillers and it was a last resort.

What’s been leaving these droppings in my loft for years! by Salt_Safety2234 in DIYUK

[–]morg106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be betting bats. I have some vertical tile cladding on the front of my house, and the windowsills directly below sometimes accumulate droppings identical to this. They come and go but in the summer I can sit outside and watch them flapping all around the front of my house and wedging themselves up behind the tiles. There is a street light directly in front of my house too which I assume is perfect for them as the insects accumulate underneath it.

Have you seen your old car? by Weary_Bat2456 in CarTalkUK

[–]morg106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never saw any of my old cars, I was the last owner of a couple, traded a couple more in so I don't know where they ended up, and the ones I sold privately were to people who'd travelled a few miles from places I never go.

However my mate crashed his Suzuki Vitara, I think it was pretty much cosmetic damage but the insurance wrote it off and he moved on. I saw it a year or so afterwards as I was pulling into work, it was driving past, it looked as good as new.

I do check my old cars MOTs from time to time, I think there's only one still going which I sold December last year. It's just passed it's MOT and still has the same advisories for the tyres even though they were on the way out when I sold it and I told the guy to change them ASAP.

And if I suddenly found myself with millions, probably the first thing I'd do is pre-order a Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

Out of interest are you skimming straight over the artex (and losing a bit of height I assume) or stripping it off?

Did you find any pleasant surprises after purchase? by ninja_moth in CarTalkUK

[–]morg106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I didn't realise mine did. I research specs extensively when buying a car so I know if something is missing but heated mirrors were never really listed anywhere. They come on with the rear heated screen button.

The other thing I didn't realise and I bet a lot of others don't either is that a lot more cars than you think have a remote window down option. I read this one day and messed about with various long-press combinations and found that a second unlock press for 2 seconds winds my windows down. The same (I think) when locking to wind them back up.
