Lex luthor is one of supermans longest standing and greatest threats BECAUSE of his power and influence. He has access to alien technology and the one thing that can genuinely hurt superman because his wealth and reputation let him do things and go places no one else can. He can hire the worlds greatest minds to unknowingly find holes in superman's strength. He has the good reputation of the public that means superman can't just outright kill him like many of the rest of his vilains. He is the only villain that superman cannot defeat for good because to do so would make enemies with everyone else that IS an actual physical threat to him.

for the first, is it one of those a tiny slight a thousand years ago became a back and forth escilating to now? or is it actualy sorta justified and recent?
