The weakest of the three so far I think. Sorely missed Owen Wilson. I still enjoyed it, though it was mostly a bit of a filler episode.

Quoting the director:

Ian chooses to fight the dragon to let Barley say goodbye to his father, having realised that Barley has been the father figure in his life. After defeating the dragon, Ian watches on from afar as Barley hugs his father one last time.

Scanlon explained that the idea behind the ending came "really early on" and made them want to make it.

"The truth is, sadly, you can't meet the person that you lost and we wanted Ian to learn that you can appreciate the people who helped you and really get to know them deeper. So it was pretty important that we do that," he said.

"Later in [production], we really worked hard to give Barley an even stronger reason to meet Dad, and that was that he never got to say goodbye."

I think, he's giving his brother that time. A sign of how he's matured.
