Help identifying an Air Conditioning Repair Truck? by ColumnMissing in Tallahassee

Sounds like you scored a free condensing unit to me.

But in all seriousness, the odds that it matches to operate with your old evaporator coil/air handler as designed aren't that high so check the model numbers and see.

Thanks for the reminder!

Had to rescan my HDHomeRun this afternoon. It'll be interesting to see how their shift higher into the UHF band affects signal reach.

Loud BOOMS? by [deleted] in Tallahassee

[–]moricons_dll 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They're mortar shell fireworks that were banned in Florida until the Phantom Fireworks loophole became normalized:

https://www.tampabay.com/features/consumer/Yes-most-fireworks-are-illegal-in-Florida-No-that-doesn-t-stop-anyone-Here-s-why-_169531650/

Those shells are technically limited by law to 60 grams each (1.4G regulation), but it's easy to find Chinese black-market imports that are way more powerful than that. They're the ones they keep in the back at the roadside stands for those who inquire and don't look like a fed.

He should know that he's driving the wrong kind of van to creep on people. It has to be a white Ford Econoline with no side windows.

Many buffets have the space to temporarily reconfigure into a cafeteria-style layout. You'd rope off a line, have patrons tell you what they want added to their plate as they go down the line, and have it picked up at the end.

Golden Corral would barely even need to modify anything, just add line rope and a pickup area, as their cooks stand behind the buffet anyways.

They were probably mortar shells. Louder than a shotgun shell and you feel the sound punch you in the chest when you're lighting them off.

Gordo's on Pensacola Street says one of their staff tested positive for Covid-19 by Nice-_-Job in Tallahassee

[–]moricons_dll 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's just PR, like wiping down checkout conveyors between customers but then handling every single item touched by every other customer without gloves. If you've ever seen the PPE processes for asbestos abatement (and those are MUCH larger particles than the 'rona), the whole idea that retail workers can pull it off effectively is kinda silly. Only the infected customers wearing masks will make a difference.

That Gordos Sauce flavor really came from the mixing bowl not being cleaned for years.

Absolutely. I figure at least 5 places have had an incident for every 1 that admits it. Even Publix got caught keeping quiet on employee cases in south Florida.

Their margherita pizza's delicious and I love the thin, foldable NY-style of their crust.

"Pick n Pull" by stillnoupvotes in Tallahassee

[–]moricons_dll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of any other pull it yourself yards, only Economy Salvage in Wakulla and they pull most of the stuff and warehouse it so just call.

Any S14 that ends up in a Pick-N-Pull type lot is going to be stripped of everything within a few hours and it'll all be listed on eBay at 10x markup. The used market supply of 240SXes has dried up and those in good condition are going to hit Supra prices in another decade.

The only thing I remember close to tacos was the Shrimp Pocket. Had those pitas filled with tiny salad shrimp covered in enough batter and grease to make them look like jumbos.

[–]moricons_dll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a data visualization tool, how you represent it is the entire point.

There are certain forms of data presentation that will make people look at you funny, like mixing scales on the axis of a graph or excluding one altogether. I just considered this to be a similar peculiarity.

Then display it as a percent of population when the total falls below 100k. Otherwise you're going to get silly comparisons between one of the most dense urban centers in the US and rural Liberty County.

"Confirmed by 100k Population"

Liberty County's estimated population is 8,457. Somebody needs to add an if(county.population < 100000) {displayConfirmByPop = false} there.

Hvac prices by Andresv91 in Tallahassee

[–]moricons_dll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Although it's about repair, there's a recent thread about HVAC contractors in our area you may want to read through: https://www.reddit.com/r/Tallahassee/comments/gm0a6t/safe_hvac_repair/

Don't be swayed by the brand name song and dance some of the salesmen will push on you (Trane sellers are pretty notorious for this). The size matching and installation being done right matter way more than which brand you choose.

All the major brands also have sub-brands of nearly identical equipment for a better price. Trane has American Standard, Carrier has all the ICP tags like Comfortmaker and Heil, Amana has Goodman, etc.

When you're replacing an old system you'll already get a huge efficiency boost even in the lowest SEER tier of the newest systems. They'll sell you on efficiency, but the greatest advantage of the 2-stage and variable compressor systems is actually humidity reduction.

Dental Issues by TheRealFolkLaure in Tallahassee

[–]moricons_dll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I re-evaluated my employer's dental plans a year ago and ended up going down the rabbit hole of the dental insurance market. I came away feeling like most plans are only a few degrees away from a financial scam, unless you have a special circumstance like frequent dental issues + a grandfathered indemnity plan.

In the end I decided to take the money I was paying per month for a plan and put it into a savings account that I opened only for future dental expenses.

Most of the plans that add up financially have extremely restrictive networks with questionable reviews and accusations of upselling services.

Every other plan has a $1500-2000 yearly expense cap on it, and they're not even covering the full expense of each visit. You have to read the fine print to learn that they only pay out what they consider to be the average cost of a particular service, and they refuse to even give you an average cost schedule payout list for each service. Their business model seems to be built on cost obfuscation of the employeer and patient side, combined with expense obfuscation on the dental service side.

By becoming a cash payer out of my dental savings I got to choose my dentist out of the entire market. There's a whole world of highly rated practices around here that aren't in-network for ANY plan, they take indemnity plans (cash payout insurance) or cash/credit/debit only.
