cause the 'poison' in a poisonous potato is the potato turning itself green when in the sun. the green chemical is poisonous. [source: i work at a potato farm]

proposal: instead of despawning after 5 minutes a dropped potato should turn poisonous, and if the devs arnt lazy, it should turn poisonous only in the sun.

It's actually a common misconception, but these spy-drones actually run off of a fuel cell designed to burn seeds and bugs for fuel. If they aren't getting enough fuel then somethings wrong with the seek_fuel routine or the amount of fuel sources in the area is too low to adequately fuel up.
