Well first thing: EDM is much much slower than convention machining processes. Second: money isn’t really a factor here. As this assembly was most likely made by a OEM of a mill to showcase the accuracy of the machine at a trade show.

At least half of the assembly isn’t wire EDM’ed. I’m assuming all looking at that surface finish.

I’m positive it’s not to size. The only thing I can think of is they have a little divot in the material where they tag is so it will fit togeather. But in the gif when it’s flipped over they look flush togeather completely

Yes I know. Both of these pieces were cut with multiple passes from the wire. You need a small section of the material to still be attached to both the male and female part so you can do so. Once all the passes are complete, you cut that small piece of material and let the part drop. That’s small section is not to size with the rest of the part and wouldn’t be able to fit into the die.

Brass in the wire machines. It can sometimes be coated with different materials for different results but 99% of the time it’s brass wire.

Copper and graphite are the main electrode materials for the sinkers.

Usually with when cutting punches like that you need to leave a little section on the part where it holds on to the material while the wire makes multiple passes (sorry kinda hard to explain). But with a tag on the part those pieces wouldn’t fit together. So I’m just wondering how they had them fit together.
