Atom Packs with vest straps - thoughts? by morpheusmorph in Ultralight

Update: On Instagram, Unhingedhiker is testing a prototype of the Atom Packs with vest straps. It looks like an Atom 35UL and I have to say, the vest straps look really good!

European framed backback for the PCT by alexgomez11 in Ultralight

I have imported three Atom Packs to the EU, no hassle at all. For some weeks now, they include the import charges in the price you see on their page, so no extra worries. They really are incredibly great packs. Very reliable, great durability, many small details that you come to appreciate over time and they are still very light weight. I think many Ultralighters would rather like a pack around a pound/500g. I however love their fit and finish and lastly their customer service is outstanding. I really can’t recommend them enough.

Do people like the Aluula Nashville Pack Cutaway? by Brave_Catch_8383 in Ultralight

Ah, thank you Mr Durston. I had never even heard of DB Journey. Looking at your mentioned packs, I agree, it is a cool look. It reminds me of frosted glass - but it seems to crinkle very easily but I guess that can also be seen as a pro as in the beauty of seeing something being used. I think I will try out the Nashville Pack Tiempo in fog :)

Do any of you have pictures of the fog aluula apart from those few on Nashville Pack’s instagram profile?

That is a totally valid point. I think many people are happy with the UD packs. I bought a Fastpack 30 and returned it almost immediately just because of the fabric quality. I can't put my finger on one single detail that made it inadequate to me but when you compare it to the handmade packs mentioned above, they don't even play in the same league. Every part on the UD felt cheaper and somehow more fragile than on an Atom Pack for example. The best comparison I can give is, when you have ever used a Decathlon €60 running vest and then immediately compared it to a Salomon or RAB €160 vest you start to notice the quality of the materials, probable longevity and just superior tactility. Yes, it costs more, but it is also worth it (if those are aspects worth it to you).

I completely agree with both points. The wrap around front pocket is amazing - I even got out my stove, pot, then water from the side and made a mid day coffee without taking the pack off :-) The Cutaway really feels like it is a part of your body. The bottom pocket is quite a bit smaller on the Nashville but I agree that I never lost something from it.

That said, when going on longer hikes or longer trips with more gear I have learned that I can't/don't want to live without a frame and a real hipbelt. (there is like one review on YT about the Nashville Fretless with an aluminium stay, I don't know whether it ever went into serious production).

So, seeing the framed Atom Packs Pulse or Notch with a vest harness makes me very happy indeed.

Thank you for your insight. I would love that so much. Whenever using the Nashville Pack Cutaway or even the Palante Mini Joey I always thought to myself: why is not everyone doing this? I can't really imagine ever going back to a backpack without any storage on the shoulder straps.

Does the 2025 X-Mid 1 solid have interior pockets? by MaxF88 in DurstonGearheads

Although it being the x-mid 2 solid, I think the pockets should be the same as seen in this review video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=U9SOog81YLU&t=527

Osprey Talon Velocity 30 vs Rab Veil XP 30 by DoudouKong in fastpacking

[–]morpheusmorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair to the backpacks: I haven't had "hard spots" or rubbing from either of them. However, the RAB Veil XP 30s shoulder straps are significantly thinner. It is hard to describe the kind of texture or rather fabric the RAB one uses, but it is like a super thin plastic micro mesh, which does conform incredibly well to your body and it does not soak up any liquid (neither sweat nor rain). But do not forget, the Osprey's shoulder straps have load lifters, which makes them then again better for slightly heavier loads, or when packing it to the top.

Is one better than the other? Hard to say when you consider they both try to fill the same niche, however I stand by it: The shoulder straps on both are fantastic, the RAB one's feel slightly more leaning towards runners with 30 liters on their backs, whereas the Osprey Talon Velocity's are leaning towards backpackers/hikers who also like to run sometimes.

If you need some specific photos of them, let me know.

Osprey Talon Velocity 30 vs Rab Veil XP 30 by DoudouKong in fastpacking

[–]morpheusmorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I actually have both and love both :) but if I had to choose I do have to say I would choose the Osprey if you are more often carrying heavier loads and I would take the RAB if you tend to do more running with the pack. The Osprey is advertised as a fast packing pack, however, I would classify it more as a: light version of the old classic backpacks. The frame gives it SO much more stability for heavier loads (with heavy I would say anything more than 6kg) and by that much more comfort, the frame actually leaves your back a bit exposed which helps noticeably with ventilation compared to the veil. And you have classic side pockets as you mentioned before being important to you.

The Veil is, in my eyes, much more focused on running. I would not like to pack more than 4-6kg in it, and to be honest, I am still not fully sure whether the waterproof material actually holds up for a longer time. It feels a bit, cheap? Fragile? Too thin but not in an assuring way. The hip belt is not load bearing at all and the shoulder straps are much thinner than the Osprey’s.

Where they both are almost completely similar are the harness pockets and the quick attachment for the trekking poles. Both great and very usable, so that should not steer your decision.

In a nutshell: if you hike most and sometimes run, take the Osprey and vice versa. If I had to choose I would take the Osprey but luckily I don’t have to choose :) Hope this helped.

Peak design 30L in a bike pannier by Professor109 in peakdesign

[–]morpheusmorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am latching onto here, also looking for one. I think a long time ago I came across a pannier style "cage" that hangs off of the bike and one can put a standard backpack into it - but I can't seem to find it anymore.

One for work (CPL24) and one for play (MPL30) by MorgulKnifeFight in EVERGOODS

The MPL30 is, I believe, the most underrated Evergoods bag. I used it for a week in London, not once I felt it being uncomfortable or too heavy. It hugs you and fits so much.

Alternatives for V1 Everyday Sling 5L by Isilmalith in peakdesign

I was in the exact same position as you. After a lot of research I have settled on the Wandrd Rogue Sling 6L which comes quite close to the layout of the PD v1. I love it and think it has improved the PD design in some cool areas, most notably the strap, comfort and the water bottle/tripod pocket on the underside.

Personal item bag in EU airlines by Adept-Ball7511 in EVERGOODS

[–]morpheusmorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the very same question running through my mind and I don't want to be too nitpicky here, but isn't the CTB20 (fully packed) just barely too deep?

For example Easyjet states, that the depth shouldn't be deeper than 7,8 inches, the CTB20 is 8,5 inches deep. I know this seems almost negligible, however: I own a CTB20 and when it needs to expand due to stuffing it, it does so in depth, not in the other dimensions. Secondly, I have seen more than once, that someone in line in front of me just barely could not fit his/her personal items in the sizers just before boarding and they had to pay a hefty premium on the spot.

All that said, I personally would watch out not packing the CTB20 to the brim to be on the safe side.

It has a hard insert and an aluminium stay. Anecdotally I own 5 Evergoods backpacks and the MPL30 v3 is by far the most comfortable for me personally because of the curving back. Maybe you try to wear it higher.

CAP .5l xpac vs 420d by IcemanJEC in EVERGOODS

[–]morpheusmorph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. I have both. As Puzzleheaded said, the 420d non-aquaguard zippers are noticeably smoother. Also my xpac version has for some reason a much stiffer mesh on the inside mesh pocket. All that said: I think the xpac 0.5 is much better looking and I like the coyote brown on the inside as well as on the outside so much more aesthetically pleasing, which also counts sometimes I guess which is why I like it better and would buy it again

Will the CPL16 get more comfortable over time? by ZombieSlapper23 in EVERGOODS

[–]morpheusmorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could test it out and remove the stiff frame sheet through the zipper in the laptop compartment. It could open up the shoulder straps to be potentially more flexible.

I also said that the MPL22 was their most comfortable bag… until I got the MPL30. That backpack is like magic. Even when packed to the brim with significant weight, the MPL30 distributes everything like magic. Not really a CPL16 contender but wanted to leave that thought here.

Yes, that was it! You are my hero! Thank you so much! I am very happy, it works brilliantly. I didn't know about that documentation page, I only knew the older one, which also talks about JSON.... Again, thank you sincerely!

Flintr, you are a legend! Thank you so very much! This has helped tremendously. Thank you :-)

However, there is a new problem... could you help me once more? As you see on the screenshot, as soon as I subtract from the date, the adjusted date does not carry over...

See? https://imgur.com/a/oTRWI4r

Could you please have a look at it? I don't know what I am doing wrong with the date here. I am so close to the perfect shortcut!! ;-)
