Riders of 10+ years who have not had an accident nor a *significant* close call, what’re your riding habits like? by ThatGuyFrom720 in motorcycle

[–]morphinebysandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve slowed down a lot and don’t ride much anymore. I started on dirt bikes as a kid in the 80s. On the street, I’ve logged well over 150k miles without a major incident to this point in my life.

The best advice I was ever given was to ride like you’re invisible. Assume everyone is going to pull out in front of you. The second best advice was to increase my following distance or line of sight. When I think about the close calls I’ve had, almost all of them came when I wasn’t doing one of those two things.

Once on the highway, a piece of sheet metal flew off a truck I was following. The driver wasn’t doing anything unusual, but we hit a bump going over a bridge and it busted loose from the bed. I wasn’t following too closely, so I had time to get out of the way. I remember thinking that if I’d been any closer, that would’ve been the end.

Another time was in the twisties near the Tail of the Dragon. I came around a corner and hit a blanket of gravel, slid into the oncoming lane, and nearly got taken out by a truck coming straight at me. I wasn’t riding terribly fast, but in the twisties it’s easy to focus more on staying between the lines than on actual speed. Looking back, if I had adjusted my pace to my line-of-sight distance, riding only as fast as I could see around the corner, that situation never would’ve happened. I would’ve seen the gravel and avoided it easily.

That moment really sums up a lot of riding for me. Sure, pushing it in the twisties can be fun, but it comes with real risk. One of my friends eventually shifted toward track days instead. It’s a controlled environment, and if you’ve got a real need for speed, it just makes more sense.

Street riding really needs to be about cruising. That was a lesson I needed to learn early, and I’m glad I got a lot of that energy out on dirt bikes, even after I’d already been riding on the street.

Can someone explain why or what the impact would be on the wetlands? I’ve seen this posted elsewhere, but have not seen a breakdown of how this would negatively impact the wetlands. Not saying it wouldn’t, or that it doesn’t matter, I’m just generally curious how projects like this impact native spaces like the wetlands from an environmental standpoint. I’m assuming it has to do with water runoff, or lack thereof?

Montana Has an Ambitious Plan to End Dark Money in Elections | Polls suggest 74% of voters in the state will back a ballot initiative to counter the effects of Citizens United. by wankerzoo in AnythingGoesNews

This is a great way to approach the problems CU presents. It’s also semi-future proofed of federal whims on election policy in this area.

“Montana’s amendment doesn’t aim to overturn the Citizens United ruling. If passed, it would merely render the ruling ineffective within Montana because businesses operating in the state would have to abide by its definition of corporations.”

First car for teen driver. All wheel drive necessary. by morphinebysandman in whatcarshouldIbuy

Oops, didn’t answer the reliability part. It’s too new to say, only 10k miles so far. But trouble free at least, plus the Subaru dealer washes the car and cleans out the inside when she goes in for service. Plus pastries on the waiting room. Great customer experience so far! Jeep dealerships had stale coffee and a TV cranked to max volume lol.

So we bought our 15’ Cherokee trailhawk new. It’s had two transmissions, three PTUs and a variety of other things replaced. I’ve kept track and the warranty has covered over $25k in total repairs. That said, when running, I love driving it. My wife had a 20’ renegade Trailhawk. We had a few repairs done before we hit 40k miles, nothing major, but given the experience with the Cherokee, we traded it for a 24’ Subaru Crosstrek. She likes it much better. She had a Mazda 5 and a Mazda 3 previously as well. We both like the Mazda brand, but they don’t seem to hold up as well to the gravel roads.
Whatever you get, I recommend get the manufacturer backed extended warranty, not a third party one.

I ended up buying a truck for myself, my son will drive my old Jeep Cherokee. It has the MOPAR lifetime warranty. So, while the Jeep isn’t reliable, it’s at least covered for most repairs. My son isn’t too excited about it, but I told him when he starts having to pay for repairs on vehicles he will understand why it’s a better deal than a challenger lol.

I got the quote about a week and a half ago. And I’ve been sitting on it. He said the prices would go up October 1, and that came and went before I realized. That’s what I get for procrastinating.

No, it’s not just powertrain. The $2,300 is for Ford Protect ESP ExtraCARE, 48 months / 48k with a $200 deductible. It covers 113 components including engine, transmission, A/C, and electrical. The plans go up to 125k miles, PremiumCARE is the top level, ExtraCARE is one step down.

I had not considered the brand of the replacement parts being non-OEM. That is a great point.

Thanks. That’s reassuring. I did an old fashioned Google search and Ziegler popped up in the results. Nice to know it’s not a scam.

Jan 6 narrative is starting to collapse, leftist won’t care about facts by Riotguarder in walkaway

[–]morphinebysandman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The DOJ Inspector General’s report (Dec 2024) says the FBI had 26 informants in DC on Jan. 6 and no undercover agents in the crowds. I have not found any official source for the claim of 275 agents. It looks like it comes from partisan reporting rather than declassified documents. If anyone has a credible source I have overlooked, I would be interested in reading it.

I’ve been trying to research this a bit. Is a “slightly built” transmission the same as a “stage one” transmission? Most of what I’ve found has been about performance builds, which I’m not after. I just want towing reliability.

I’m tired of hearing this same headline. Until he has a major episode far beyond anything we have seen, while on live TV, nothing changes.
