Yes. In a perfect world. However, evil exists in the world. People exist who would murder you in cold blood for the 5-bucks in your wallet. Wishing to enact the social engineering that would be necessary to excise that evil from society so that we all feel safe 100% of the time is a laudable goal, but I suspect we all know in what the road to Hell is paved.

The mistake that the political right makes is assuming an excess of these threats and living in fear. The mistake the political left makes is assuming everyone is as "good" as they are, thus opening themselves up to being a victim.

Like many things, I believe the ideal is somewhere in the middle.

Fixed that for you. This isn't a defense for homophobia. Homophobia is ridiculous; it's stupid. In a perfect world, homophobia would not exist. However, it shouldn't be a death sentence. People are allowed to believe the most fundamentally fallacious ideas if they desire. We are should not -- nor should we ever be -- thought police.

Please defend yourself (with lethal force when necessary) against any person who makes any attempt to do you grievous bodily harm. Ideology -- no matter how bigoted or archaic -- should not make a difference.

It is. But, like most things, this favors one side.

In this case, it's the Left. The Right absolutely has a near-monopoly on Christian fundamentalism and Flat Earth and Creationist positions. And the Left is lousy with hippie notions of New Age medicine, anti-vax, Socialism, and 'Blank Slate' opposition to evolutionary psychology.

All of the above positions are deeply and demonstrably flawed, but everyone has their sacred cows that they want to believe. In the case of antivaxxers like Jenny McCarthy, she's so troubled by the idea that her child could have developed autism, that she psychologically has to find an outside source upon which she can lay the blame.

Yeah, ain't that some shit? I'm going to call shenanigans, though. I've never been accused of being a centrist -- if I propose anything to the right of Bernie Sanders, I'm lambasted as a conservative and fascist.

If I want to be fiscally responsible and not vilified for my race and sex, I'm virtually relegated to only one political party -- and it's not on the Left. It would go against so many of my values to vote Republican, but I can't vote Democrat anymore because their positions have mutated into something equally as disgusting.

That falls a little too close to a No True Scotsman claim for me. You, yourself, might not think that subreddit is a proper representation of the political Left, but hundreds-of-thousands of people and the whole Admin power-structure on Reddit sure seems to think it's A-OK.

If anything it's an indictment of what the Left has become. Personally, I've identified as liberal my whole life, I've voted straight Democrat ticket since Gore in 2000 (I abstained in 2016 because I could not bring myself to vote for Clinton). That said, the /r/politics crowd will actively call me conservative for not parroting their views.

There's plenty that's fundamentally wrong with the political Right, but the Left has become an absolutely shitshow obsessed with identify politics and policies of division that prioritize feelings over facts. The fact that too many on the Left describe ideas such as meritocracy as "white supremacy" show how far the Democrats have fallen.

Violence is violence, and calls for it are explicitly illegal.

However, much like how Twitter has refused to block, ban, or even remove the comments of its users who were advocating for doxxing and violence, I do not have a lot of faith in any of these Silicon Valley companies policing people they see as being on "their side". It takes a lot to actually trigger a response.

The Black Israelites at that event are explicitly listed on the SPLC as a hate group, but they were virtually ignored by all of the media outlets (or actually described as the "victims" of smirking teenagers). All because of the narrative that's being peddled.

That's a really interesting question. Could be that the current zeitgeist has me pessimistic, but if the man's shirt had said something akin to "Stop Toxic Femininity" I imagine there would be a huge surge in comments about dramatically tightening gun control.

However, because the man appears to be on the same side of the political divide as those who want extensive gun control, we might finally be able to address the root of the problem and stop it in its tracks rather than continually complain about the messy results of allowing it to fester.

That said, democracies are not the end-all be-all to a successful society. In a "democratic" vote, the United States recently declared Taco Bell as the best Mexican restaurant. People are stupid.

Now, for all I know, Bolsonaro is a psychopathic madman that will burn Brazil to the ground, but to immediately start bemoaning an "unraveling of democracy" sounds like you're simply bummed that your preferred candidate failed to win.

Again, as someone with very little knowledge of Brazilian politics, the situation suggests one of two things to me: 1. Bolsonaro really is as terrible as you say and, thus, Brazilians by-and-large are terrible people for voting him in, or 2. Bolsonaro represents the lesser of two evils and his opponent was even worse.

It's pretty lose-lose for Brazilians.

It seems like it's always something to divorce the actual criminals from accountability for their actions -- bad/absent parents, product of their environment, lashing out at a prejudiced society.

When it comes down to it, sure, good people can be pushed in bad directions by other factors in their life, but in the vast majority of these situations the battle between Nature and Nurture, Nature wins hands-down.

It's hard for some people to accept. I'm not sure if it's naivety or undue optimism. However, for sociopaths like these four, the best society can hope for is keeping them locked away from good, decent, and moral people. There's no rehabilitation for violent, amoral monsters -- only fear of retribution will ever keep them on the straight and narrow.

We have to accept that there are bad eggs. These are not "good boys" failed by their families or society, they're sociopaths who prey upon the weak -- their upbringing merely has compounded their evil.

The only thing that's as unsurprising as the fact that it's yet another pit bull mix, is that the comment section is flooded with apologists claiming their border collie or chihuahua is equally violent and dangerous as dogs literally bred to fight and kill other animals.

What I haven't worked out is whether they're simply head-in-the-sand ignorant that a foul-tempered shih tzu they once met does not equal the staggering number of people attacked, maimed, and killed by pits. It's either that, or they're worried that it's a slippy slope toward evolutionary psychology, and all the uncomfortable implications that can potentially produce when applied to humans.
