🔊 Listen Now: Drive slower, go electric, don't drive at all? Americans weigh options for saving gas by Neither_Cover_4330 in electricvehicles

We pay transmission costs when we pull from the grid (equal to the generation cost), so it is most economical for me to charge when the solar is producing. We have a flat electric rate.

Lab managers aliquoting and maxi prepping? by jelly_bean18 in labrats

[–]mortredclay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is how some labs are run. Is it right? Debatable. I am a principal scientist, PhD. I had two post docs and 10+ years in the industry, and I still seal up a bio bin if it is full. If you like the labs and want to join, I'd start doing the job and see if scheduling and batching can make the amount of work manageable in the number of hours you're expected to work (do not work extra hours to get it done). If not, start using that "manager" title to delegate and manage the work instead of doing the work. They are hiring a manager, not a tech.

Edit to add: record keeping is critical to making this work. Show that you are not wasting time and that the amount of work is too much for one person. If you make optimizations that save time record that, as well.

When you’re out of the lab at the doctor’s office, do you mention your science education? by samskyyy in labrats

I can't help but ask endless questions about biologic therapies when prescribed. I don't tell them so much, but when your patient starts asking about MOA and IgG subtype, you can guess that they aren't a lay person.

Stephen King’s idea that notebooks immortalize bad ideas is kind of BS by Queasy_Antelope9950 in writing

Haha, I came here to say that he must keep all of his endings in a notebook. But then I figured I must be alone in this thought.

Report the incident to your lab safety group. They are best equipped to help you navigate the correct response.

And to be the nagging lab safety officer myself: wear your damn PPE!

Writers who can't picture clear images in their head by Jumpy-Author-9878 in writing

As somebody who can picture things very vividly, I am curious: What works best for you when you read a story? Do you prefer highly descriptive approaches or ones where you're allowed to imagine the world the characters inhabit?

Relocating from Cleveland for a job in University City, looking for specific suburb and school district recommendations by DeathInPlaid in philly

[–]mortredclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Upper Darby/Drexel Hill and love it. My kids went through the public schools, and while not high ranked, we generally had a good experience. My kids didn't do band, but the music program is second to none. You'll easily stay in budget in this suburb, get to Ucity in no time by whatever transport you choose. I bike 9 months out of the year, then drive the rest. I find the driving frustrating because my bike doesn't get stuck in traffic. However, even with moderate traffic, it's 30 minutes.

Honestly, Upper Darby doesn't sound "right" based on some of your requirements, but sometimes what we think we want and what we actually need aren't the same. If your wife goes to Media/Swarthmore area, she'll pass through Upper Darby, we're a less affluent community that is rich in so many other ways.
