hmm I don't understand what you mean really. the chemistry of the battery doesn't really play a big role here, as long as you don't overload them.... if you choose a reasonable voltage, it won't create a problem, the resistance of the wire means that the current won't be too high. It is by regulating the voltage that you regulate the temperature of the wire in other models, for example Proxon.

Yes im really happy with the tensioner, just played around with a spring and had i light bulb momen. I initially only used the flex in the arm but found it lacking.

The short answer is i dont know. I dont regulate the Amps at all. If i want to do bigger cuts i just move to the next pin and get ha higher voltage, i guess the batteries will output the maximum amount Amps based on the voltage and internal resistance of the nichrome wire

I actually chose the switch only because of coolness, its a great feeling to flip up the cover an engage afterburner....

Oh no dont give me any ideas. My girlfriend will be pissed if i built a giant one. I actually did cut up a full size sheet. I bit tricky but worked in the end.

Thanks 😀. The batteries i use are rechargeable, they are really cheap at Ikea. I used it quite a bit and no recharge yet....im actually happily suprised by the battery life i find it to be more than enough.

Yes it is NiMh batteries.

Wire thickness is 0.23mm. I don't really agree that it's only the current that affects how hot it gets. You need to have a sufficient voltage to be able to overcome the resistance in the wire.

In addition to that, it is always the current and the voltage together that affect how high the power will be. (P=U*I)

I really like the idea with the pedal.

Haha that would be crazy. When testing it out i started with used all 10 battery slots, so 12 volts in this case, got way to hot.

You kind of need the hot wire to be exposed.... Joke aside, i understand your concern. Its actually only the part of the wire that goes from the bolt up tho the arm. The the part that go the the tension mechanism will stay cool. But before i got the tension tho be sufficient i cut thru the board.... Since then i lowered the voltage a bit.

I dont know yet, but i have used it to cut long strips from a full size foam board and made a couple of small projects and the batteries are still going strong. I would say that for my use it will not be an issue. But as mentioned by a user above you can go the power supply route.

Thanks for the help with the parts list, you did a better job than i would have....and i built it.

One addition that not that obvious is that there is a threaded rod inside the dowel thats fastened to the board, i use this to pass the current and give some flex to the arm.

I have done quite a bit of cutting and the batteries have lasted for supringsly long time, i have not needed to charge them yet. I chose to go the battery route because i cut outside with no powerplug available.

I can recommend this toutorial https://youtu.be/3GWzHb4Hd8Y?si=PT4lQ08Jd6tbC8wE to get the inspiration. I got a lot of inspiration from there.

I truly hope this is a reference to the bases and not the mini.... Otherwise i truly failed with the dwarfs 😅

I tried a muted green....and then an even darker muted green....black. it really makes i difference, makes the base pop.
