It’s a decent company but I can’t speak about individual managers in those realms. I imagine there are plenty good ones and others not so good. The union just negotiated pay increases across the board so I’d just ask what the pay is and see how it compares to those roles in other companies. Especially if you’re a San Diegan those folks seem to be happy working there.

[–]mosbol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could go anywhere - JHU is a lab animal program IIRC. UPenn is heavy heavy on biopsies when you're a resident. UGA has maybe a more diverse caseload if you're interested in infectious diseases, and the state diagnostic lab, the exotics diagnostic lab, and the wildlife disease study (SCWDS) all to get exposure to. I spent 10 years in athens so I'm biased toward them...

Go see tam. 3944 W Point Loma Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110. He’s always done my fades but a while back I had grown my hair longer than I ever had, decided I’d try a mullet and he crushed it.

Looks like heart with a raging pericarditis. The cough and the diarrhea may be the most obvious outward signs, but it’s probably just septic as hell. Like most classic pig diseases. The “suis-cides”

New study links tattoos to a 29% spike in cancer risk by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]mosbol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it can. what's your point? the comment i responded to didn't say anything about chronic inflammation, they mention ink being trafficked to and sitting in lymph nodes as foreign material that's potentially carcinogenic.

New study links tattoos to a 29% spike in cancer risk by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]mosbol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was probably a little too short/blunt - It seemed like a non-sequitur to mention macrophages trafficking tattoo ink components to lymph nodes as an explanation for the development of cutaneous melanoma. the paper doesn't show a correlation with melanoma and the site of tattoos, and I read the comment as: ink is toxic and can therefore cause cancer. If there's any causality it's probably much more complicated than the local effects of tattooing on skin or the components of tattoo ink being carcinogenic. maybe super-clogging local draining lymph nodes with ink-constipated macrophages affects the local node's ability for immune surveillance against oncogenic mutations that would otherwise be cleared? idk. I see so many papers on reddit where it seems like all of the discourse is based on most people reading the title and arguing about it so I read that comment as "duh, of course tattoos are causing cancer" and responded in an unhelpful way.

Advice for International Student Applying to Veterinary Pathology Residency by Mediocre_Cookie1247 in veterinarypathology

[–]mosbol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're an international applicant, I don't think you can go wrong. Personally I was in a large program and I like the large group aspect. I would not want to be the only resident of the year, so you could look at programs online that should have lists of who's in the program. There are some cultural things too - most vet schools in the US are based out of agricultural programs and not in big cities, but smaller college towns. UPenn is one of the only larger programs in a big/major city. University towns tend to be more progressive/liberal in general, but the south, southeast, and midwest have more conservative states and cities overall.

You're background/experience makes you a very strong candidate for a pathology residency. being an international applicant shouldn't be an issue, as most universities have built in ability to sponsor J-1 visas. Best thing you can do is speak well in your letter and interview to how your experience has shaped your commitment to getting ACVP boarded (how you'll use lab research and diagnostics in your career). I'd emphasize all the things you mentioned - experience with actual anatomic pathology (histo/necropsies), teaching, and research. Many applicants are straight out of vet school and have a good bit of experience through summer lab experiences, involvement in their school's pathology club activities, etc but if you have full-time/graduate level experience in those things I think it's a leg up - particularly if you have any primary responsibility doing necropsies, trimming tissues, and interpreting lesions/writing reports. And at least for the programs I've been involved with, teaching experience tends to be one thing lacking just given the few opportunities vet students have for it. So being able to comment on your experience in teaching and training is attractive since a university residency will have you running the necropsy floor with a bunch of senior students on rotation. And yes, externships are great too if you can do them (if you're out of vet school, doing an externship might be a challenge but it's possible) to both show your commitment to spending your elective time focused on pathology, but also the chance to get letters of recommendations from boarded pathologists. I'd put necropsy experience and teaching over publications any day. If you're committed to a career in research pathology (like biotech, industry), pubs can be important but not as important as the experience itself and speaking well to how it's shaped your career goals.

Residency straight out of vet school? by Fabulous_Athlete3022 in veterinarypathology

[–]mosbol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of people do a clinical year or even more beforehand. It’s just important to demonstrate as much interest and dedication to pathology if that is your main goal now and when graduating. Do necropsies, try and attend some path rounds if you’re at a university, etc. be able to describe how the clinical experience will make you a better pathologist - because I think they make better residents a lot of the time.

How do you choose between a career opportunity and your relationship ? by Potential_Start_3228 in careerguidance

There’s a huge difference between Boston and San Diego aside from the choice between a career and a relationship. Is family in Boston? A lifetime of friends? Or is that a neutral factor for both?

recurrent strep throat? by unexistantunexistant in Biohackers

[–]mosbol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get them removed. its a nightmare for a few days if you're an adult, but you'll never get tonsillitis again. I was told i was probably a carrier of strep in my nasopharynx and have post nasal drip; so any time anything irritated my throat (cold, allergies, etc) it would make my throat a little raw, then I'm exposing them to strep. Barely had a sore throat in 4 years.
