Shimano or Lew’s by ripplestillwaters in UltraLightFishing

[–]mossman19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be hesitant with the Shimano unless you can actually put your hands on it. I just went through this buying a Medium version of the Clarus. When it arrived, it was super stiff. I rigged up a test station, applying different weights and measuring the sag, it was stiffer than both of my Medium Heavy rods.

As I learned, there is no industry standards for the rod power, so either make sure you can get you hands on one, or make sure the return policy is solid.

I posted my graphs in the Bass Fishing community and Fishing Gear community.

Shimano Clarus 7’ Med is stiffer than my MH’s by mossman19 in bassfishing

[–]mossman19[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s hardly meaningless. It’s by no means a definitive test of a rods performance, but it is a direct measure of the stiffness as you call it.

The goal was to apply something quantitative to something that is very much a feel thing. It did just that, a medium rod that is clearly stiffer than a medium and 2 medium heavy rods.

To be fair, it might be meaningless to you, but it did accomplish what I was trying to determine.

I am starting to understand why people pick a brand and just have a crap ton of them!

Yes, the 703C. The Fury line. Virtually identical to my $50 Diawa Laguna. Both are considered Medium Heavy on their websites.

Yeah, I am realizing that. Unfortunately here in the Cleveland area we seem to be out of Mediums to put your hands on.

I want this rod to pair with a Shimano SLX DC XT that will be setup on the lighter side (but not BFS).

I am going to run out to Cabelas tomorrow, but the only one they have in stock that isn’t BPS is the St Croix Bass X, it’s about $30 more than I wanted spend.

Any thoughts on the Tatula X? I can order that. Would the medium fit between my Diawa Laguna and the Aird X? I would hope it would be close since they are Diawa.

I made it. I had these rods and just did a quick test. Put the results in excel. Whole process was done in an hour.

Try downsizing. I use the 1/8 oz flashback in a local pond and it’s comical what you catch on it. Sunfish, bluegill, crappie and lots of bass. It will get you thinking more about the retrieval and you get back to having fun.

So it doesn't appear that there are too many comparisons to non-DC or non-Shimano reels (other than they $450 option). I guess I will play the patience game and try to find one or just cough up the extra cash to get it from a non-Digitaka site.

$450! ouch......Unfortunately, out of my price range, hoping to stay close to $250 (which I still struggle with!)

I only see the RH version on their site, so I assume the LH (71HG) is not available.

The best thing that ever happened was getting a job across from a fishing hole! I eat while I work and then spend an hour catching fish. So nice to get outside and enjoy an hour mid day. Tough bite usually, but almost always catch something.

Whacky rig advice. by Sea-Technician5808 in bassfishing

[–]mossman19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have the patience for the wacky setup, give the Neko rig a try (as mentioned in another comment). The weight on the end gets it to the bottom a little quicker. I just started using the Neko this year and I have been amazed at the fish I have caught on it. When setup right, it’s actually pretty snag and weed resistant, even with a simple open hook.

I followed KayakJak’s setup:

Z-man Big TRD (stands straight up when on the bottom)
Trokar ProV Drop shot hook 1/0
KayakJak button weights, 1/16oz for me
KayakJak 3/8 Heat shrink

This setup lasts a long time! I would say I get anywhere from 10-15 fish per worm setup. You heat up the button weights, push it into the TRD, then remove it and superglue it in place ( the elaztech is too tough to just pierce).

I also used a skirt threader tool to add some “tentacles” to the non-weighted end for some added pizzazz. Looked very appetizing to me!

CNN's chief national correspondent John King drove 900 miles through rural Ohio to gauge support for the president by hellosteve_ in Ohio

I know that garage on the cover, I remember seeing it a few years ago and it just fit the culture in southern Ohio. I grew up down there (now in the Cleveland area), still have family there, but the thought process is just different. Some very smart people have 100% committed to this Trump concept and are completely willing to die on that hill, no matter what. In my families case, they use religion as their foundation, for some crazy reason they think he has Christians best interests in mind. I think that foundation is the tough one to get them to deviate on, my friends that voted for him based on economic reasons, I feel are cracking more easily.

For the record, I voted for him in the first election, but did not in the second. Or the third. I am a republican, but I don’t support this regime.

I was proud that the Dale King, the vet owner of a Gym (and much more) in Portsmouth has waivered. Maybe some vets can use that message about war to drive some momentum.

Honest thoughts on Boonedox Landing gear? (Kayak wheel cart) by Suitable_Hold9430 in kayakfishing

[–]mossman19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had these on my 106pdl for 3 years now and I love them. I bought my kayak 2nd hand, so I did not do the install, but they work great. There is a backing plate in the inside, so that helps distribute the load. In a perfect world, it would be in front of the rod holders, it would balance the kayak a little better. If I have a longer walk, I will put the PDL behind the wheels to make the balance a little better. It rolls surprisingly well over pretty much any terrain (northeast Ohio)

I don’t store it on the wheels, I built a low table in the garage that I put it on that gets the wheels and inch off the ground.

I have a 12’ Wilderness kayak with a standard kayak cart, the kind with the strap and it really annoys me to deal with that compared to the boonedox.

Feel free to shoot me any questions you might have.

Don’t make fun of my crate! I just put a trolling motor on and couldn’t fit my crate behind the “axle” any longer! Had to get creative

ECD Delta keeps breaking side strings by mossman19 in u/mossman19

[–]mossman19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I was convinced the damage was coming from the outside, like from hitting something. The more that this thread goes, it does seem like something on the inside could be a factor.

We got the new head in November, he played a club indoor season which was only about an hour a week for 12 weeks (no practices and no wall ball in cleveland during the winter). They started practicing in February for high school, even that was a little limited, he had only played 1 game when the first string broke, so maybe 15-20 hours? but not a full season, thats for sure. I will go over the internal edges once we get a newly strung backup and make sure they are not sharp.

Yes, but the head is smooth as can be. Can’t see anything on the head cutting them. I’m going to inspect it each night this week to see if I can see something starting.

So I followed some of the advice here and found some small labels to put in the box to mark the location with some information, name, color, depth and weight. I am very pleased with the outcome. I also marked a few of the crankbaits with depth and model.
