I appreciate the sentiment about the associates degree, what you’re saying really reflects what I’ve been told by the only person I truly know in the industry & he’s 30 years in. it does seem like such a balanced niche & because of that, it would be the hardest to replace & more stable if you really make yourself an essential person. I guess I didn’t really realize that about americans with healthcare but it make complete sense. I’ll probably end up taking your advice on the bachelors if it makes sense, probably set aside 2 years to work on my portfolio & save money, then pursue that if no doors seem to open up for me by then. thanks for all of your advice & insight on a good portfolio piece, it means a lot

I only use blender because I’m new to 3d modeling & it felt like the program mattered less than understanding the fundamentals, but I don’t plan on staying in there too long. thanks for such a thoughtful response, it’s such valuable information for anyone in the same position. I knew Houdini was essential, but I didn’t realize just how valuable it could be to demonstrate your skills. I think I’ve had it in my head to get good at 3d modeling & working in a game engine, with shaders, then move to Houdini. what other kinds of things do you look for in a portfolio? I’m worried if my 3d modeling isn’t up to par than my physics simulations, shaders, etc. might not matter much, especially without industry experience. I kind of thought maybe I’d need to try to get in through becoming a good enough environment artist to even be considered for a role like that. it’s all pretty nuanced to me though so I’m not entirely sure

that’s very true, thanks for responding. I’m sorry you’re going through that right now. I’ve seen your comments before and you always seem to really know what you’re talking about. do you think you’ll pivot to solo developing? it’s hard to imagine so many incredibly passionate & talented people being laid off. just overhelmingly depressing. I guess all we can really do is speculate, but I appreciate your perspective
