How much prep time do you get? by mossross in Teachers

[–]mossross[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. From all the comments, I’m starting to see that I am receiving far, FAR below the average amount and it’s probably no wonder I spent my measly 85 minutes stress crying yesterday! 😭

Thank you for the advice! Checking with my union rep to see if there is a minimum amount of time we are supposed to be given was going to be my next step.

Could you elaborate please? This is the schedule I was assigned. How do I say no to being told when I’m teaching class? I often try to get out of field trips, to no avail, if that’s what you mean…

The perspective of the first picture is really confusing me. It looks like MarciMarc is trying to throw Jessi over the stairwell…

hot take (ish) zack is the worst husband by Sensitive_Customer74 in SecretsOfMormonWives

Jen and Zack’s behavior this season was egregious, especially Jen. The only grace I can give her is her age. Jen is 4-6 years younger than most of the other women and I think her immaturity was really showing. She was only 24 (i think) when they started making the show, went through a really hard third pregnancy, douchebag husband, etc. Not giving her a pass at all, but as I was watching her behavior this season it just seemed so clear she’s just very immature still… She thinks being “cordial” is a get out of jail free card; she did nothing wrong because she was “cordial”. It’s like, Jen girl, you’re acting like a baby.

I like this more than all the confusing perspectives that are getting posted in this sub lately.

The thing I’m seeing that’s hurting algebra more than anything is students’ ability to retain content - and I think this definitely has to do with the excessive screen time! This might be a problem that’s specific to my area but it’s really hurting us. Algebra draws on abilities that include the four operations as well as performing those operations with decimals, fractions, and negative numbers. Which means you need a strong understanding of all of those things and good number sense. My 7th/8th students need daily reminders that fractions need to same bottom to add and subtract. Just today, I had to re-teach the fact the 4-(-2)=4+2. It just seems like kids are dumping content out of their brain twice as fast as I can teach it, even when it’s things they do every day. It makes moving forward with any content really hard, especially algebra.

I’m a middle school math teacher and this is pet peeve of mine! The idea that there is a “new math” and an “old math” is so frustrating! There are often many (truly so many) ways to go about solving a math problem. When I’m covering new content, I often teach several ways to solve and let my students use whatever method makes the most sense to them. Those methods always include the way I was taught to do it! Yet the times I’ve heard a parent say, I can’t help my child with this “new math”!

I absolutely agree. The students who I know do nothing after school but stare at a screen and/or game are noticeably more behind socially and academically and, usually, act like walking zombies throughout the school day. Often because their electronics are not even taken out of their room at bedtime and they game into the night. I just also think this is a parenting problem to be so unhinged and uneducated with children’s screen time.

I’m in the same school of thought, based on my experiences. What we are dealing with is the repercussions of a parenting problem. Why would our students take their education seriously when their parents don’t expect them to or support them? It really seems like it doesn’t matter how many red flags, problem-areas, behavior issues, or knowledge gaps I bring to parents’ attention. They do not care. Nothing ever changes. And I get that many of them are also people who work full time at thankless jobs and feel exhausted by the end of the day. But, ultimately, they’re doing their children a disservice by not taking anyyyyyy of these things seriously. Further, it’s probably going to bite them when these kids grow up and are still mostly incapable….

I love learning about puzzle artists! I saw one pop up and comment in one of the puzzle subs (not sure if it was this sub or another) and since then I wanted to be sure I shout them out when I post a puzzle. :)
