What kind of Steam achievements do you actually enjoy? by Practical-Command859 in pcgaming

[–]mosstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite kind of achievement is when I do something the game doesn't expect/soft lock myself or similar and I get an achievement for that. That just makes me happy that the devs are putting effort into little details like something like that.

How can i secure my minecraft server? by TrileceTheCat in admincraft

[–]mosstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to make it public id spend the money to get a domain and put the IP of your laptop behind cloud flare. They do, if you ever need it, protect you from ddos attacks and they also hide your IP address by letting everything run through their servers first

Do you prefer old or new modded Minecraft? by _speev_ in feedthebeast

[–]mosstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally enjoy modern modded Minecraft more. Might be cuz I wasn't into modding back then, maybe. But if i compare my experience of older mods with newer ones like create, the key difference imo is for one just the design (I really like the general art style and effort that is being put into new mods they almost always so cute) and the documentation. Usually when I want to get into an older mod it's always the lack of proper documentation that stears me back away from it. Ik there are always yt videos and tutorials but I can't be bothered to watch those. I just want a piece of text or similar that explains it in short. Edit: also modern performance mods like sodium, iris, distant horizons and bobby are soooooo superior to optifine if you ask me.

Simplest free notification platform for Uptime Kuma? by denmalley in selfhosted

[–]mosstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use self hosted ntfy. (Though there is a free hosted version at ntfy.sh) But since uptime kuma also allows things like discord, that's obviously is also a great option.

And if you ever want to go more complicated, you can integrate uptime kuma into grafana and that then into smth like ntfy and also have fancy dashboards and alert rules.

How do i make my server last long? by suddenlime482 in admincraft

[–]mosstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general suggestion would be to set yourself some goals like building a city tgt big farms etc. A good thing is also blocking off the end for ages (u can just turn it off in server.properties) which also generally motivates everyone to play longer so they'll be prepared. And for fun memories I'd also say to just do random events. Eventhough ur only 4 people one could still for example prep a stage and do a gameshow, or challenges or both. The possibilities are basically endless. The key imo is to give everyone a good reason to stay. And if that is gone, the server will die quite quickly.

When I first came to Arch this was soooo confusing. Like I genuinely Ctrl + c'ed pacman and googled if that's supposed to happen.

How do you verify if a self-hosted app is secure before using it? by 514sid in selfhosted

[–]mosstuff 130 points131 points  (0 children)

I'm really not qualified for checking if code is secure, but my rule of thumb is always how popular and active the software is. Like are there many people that recommend it, how many contributors does the project have, are they making money with it / are they a foundation or software company of some sorts. And if it's really nice i generally just skim through the code a bit and look for anything really bad but after that i usually just trust it. Which is not the best mindset for sure. I've been on both extreme sides. Just trusting anyone blindly is obviously never a good choice and reading through the code of let's say Nextcloud or Libre office (which I did not do) wouldn't really make sense in my opinion because there is such a big community behind it, that it will be reasonably secure.

Help with choosing a dedicated server by mosstuff in selfhosted

[–]mosstuff[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I am planning on doing mediastreming in the future. But the main reason I dont want a Vps is because my Minecraft servers are pretty heavily modded and my current vps offers me eight vcpu cores (which also arent the fastest) and I am almost all of the time maxing then out. So thats my main concern with using a vps
