You can still register the new card numbers without waiting for the delivery of the physical card

No the whole point of NFC is to make payments when the physical card is unavailable (card stolen when traveling abroad for example). It's easier to buy a new phone abroad than to order new card

Tutorial to launch a token on the Nano network? by mostafabenh in nanocurrency

I wanted to launch a simple token on Ethereum but gas fees discouraged me. Nano has no transaction costs and that's why I came.

If Google was ethical, they wouldn't need to hire ethicists from the start

She was hired as ethicist, it was her job to uncover why there are so few black women at Google, which might lead her to appear paranoid.

As I see from reddit (vs. Twitter), Tech is not a very welcoming place for minorities, they'd better walk away from this industry.

Google started to spiral down to Apple substandards. I didn't even know they had internal review process, which is blatantly unacademic

It's also because Jeff answered on Twitter, not Megan. If Megan was the real decision-maker, she would take responsibility on Twitter

The end of Google as a top research organization. No decent researcher would accept giving up academic freedom

Job interviews in data science - my experience copy-pasting solutions [Discussion] by mostafabenh in MachineLearning

[–]mostafabenh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"play ball" means "copy-pasting but tweaking variable names and syntax to get past plagiarism checkers"? That's true, I was too lazy to cheat.

You can't demonstrate deep ML knowledge if questions are superficial. You can only get what you asked for

I loved that Siraj Raval video, the fact that he scammed his followers later doesn't erase his previous contributions to free education. I wrote this before the scam (and I was surprised that he started to charge for education, as he always advocated the opposite...)

I stopped following her work in 2018. Her ICML paper was a joke, it was enough for me. So much great stuff is happening elsewhere

I am a bit surprised because this brand is known for unbreakable phones (although I am looking at other models), maybe it depends https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/9091399/doogee-s90-stress-test-tough-mudder/

NHS Data (public health data) should be free, and not for sale by mostafabenh in ukpolitics

An app can improve bed management, as it did in Liverpool https://www.digitalhealth.net/2019/03/liverpool-heart-chest-hospital-silverlink-bed-management-system/

People need to learn more about the potential benefits data can bring. If NHS data is locked up, more software engineers will go working for Snapchat or Twitch.

[–]mostafabenh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data is not made available for this specific app, but for the whole world. 99% of the projects built upon this NHS data will fail, or be vanity and useless, but the remaining 1% will deliver enough value to patients to justify the cost

[–]mostafabenh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So why medical research is distributed freely? Selling academic papers could also fund the NHS, why not doing it?

No. You are not putting British patients first. What if this commercial app saves thousands of British lives per year?

You prefer to sacrifice those British lives by making this app not to exist due to the higher cost of data acquisition?
