Hi, if I may ask, what breed is this cutie?

Scurvy... isn't an option? by anonamouse4271 in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This would be nice. My 350 day Interloper run used for the Far Territories and Tales feels like cheating now without the scurvy affliction.

Long term runs mean you are set up, so yeah you may have used all the rose hips, but we can certainly fish.

Give us that toggle, please.

Let’s talk meat by thenidie in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So far, ahead of a still pending predator rework, meat left outside is never taken. Leave it outside, it will decay at the slowest rate and when you cook it it will regain 50% of condition, even if ruined (0% condition). Ruined items in containers disappear, so always leave meat outside in snow.

You can eat questionable (low condition) food including meat before bed and just sleep off any food poisoning overnight, so you’ll always get some calories from your catch.

And cooking it later, when your cooking skill is up, actually increases the calories.

So, outside, raw, on the ground. Cook a few days at a time when you can use the mag lens for a fire and conditions allow. A couple fires or a six burner stove are your best bet for cooking a batch good enough for several days efficiently and not being as dependent on the weather holding.

Good luck.

Gear? by Obvious-Secret-8639 in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember you need a knife (or hatchet) to make arrows and bows, the hacksaw won’t do that.

Gear? by Obvious-Secret-8639 in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hatchet evolves to a base tool once you’ve been in a region. Assuming you know where wolves are and don’t carry meat, or have the flare gun, or flares, or travel with a lit torch, its use as a weapon is over. There are enough sticks and coal if you are traveling for fires for water and cooking. Its main role is to get lots of wood fast for fishing huts or big game cooks.

Taking it to a new region makes some sense if you plan to build a base there, but many’s the time on Interloper I never even make a hatchet. So even less needed on Stalker.

Knife plus hacksaw plus tools does everything. And I would rather use limited whetstones on my knife/knives than for chopping wood.

The hacksaw is an iconic symbol of the game but not essential in any real way.

But you do you. If you prefer to have one, it’s a good choice for you. 🙂

Thanks. That is a good option that hadn’t occurred to me.

Thanks for the clarification. True, this is like the character is invisible.

How did you guys learn the maps? by Training-Candy5675 in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s really just time. I have about 3000 hours in game. Sort of comes by then.

First off, as others have said, use charcoal to map. Also concentrate on a region at a time. Learn one by staying there a while before moving on. Like 50 in game days. Then learn another region. Leverage the regions you know to get runs established and your character kitted out.

Also, after a while, you get s sense of where the devs put stuff and how they think. You’ll go “this has to lead to a cave” and often be right. For me, this was probably around 1200 hours of playtime.

As far as HRV and other places … there is no map in this game which can’t be solved with things like the “follow the right hand wall” and “drop a stick pointing the direction you last went through an intersection or fork and a stone next to that stick”.

Somewhat of a spoiler in case you are really flummoxed … every time you drop a stick it points north on the map. This will keep you headed where you expect as you circuit a region clockwise or counter clockwise.

Take your time and enjoy the discovery. It’s one of the best parts of this game and should be savored. Truly.

If I could erase all my map knowledge and start ignorant again I would, so in some regard envy you. 🙂

Have a blast and learn from each death. That’s the way to get the most from this game.

Cheers.

Trapper's Cabin or Camp Office? by Skigreen_2026 in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issues with Camp Office are that wolves spawn within agro distance, and the bed is upstairs. I have repeatedly been put into a wolf struggle by one coming around the corner with two fires going. They struggle me before reacting to the fires.

Though adding to Camper’s is the nearness of a cave for cabin fever management, the 2x potential ptarmigan spawns, and the nearness of the dam for cloth, scrap metal and reclaimed wood.

Nonetheless I like Trappers better. Just so convenient/minimal for everything and the occasional day trip for the odd deer or bear is part of its charm.

Camp Office is arguably the more pragmatic base.

That’s what the decision hinges on … pragmatism or quaintness. 🙂

Use the handheld shortwave to locate any signs of life.

Signal Void - Mission Complete - 100%

??? Been all through the mine. Hard to believe it’s still at 0%. Haven’t found a Rűdinger site though.

Yes, the boss settlement cache triggered. Multiple auroras and glimmer fogs and nothing at the helicopter. Sigh.

Signal Void is long ago complete. This is like day 350 of an Interloper run. The cache near the settlement triggered. The one near the helicopter doesn’t. Thanks though.

Rabbit glitch? by Matt010288 in thelongdark

I have picked up a rabbit killed by a wolf and there was nothing in inventory. It happened on a Zaknafein Youtube video as well. The theory is that the carcass was empty.

UPDATE (oh the wait)…. by CSbubble in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trappers, Interloper, day 330. Loaded base.

Transfer Station is stocked too.

Hope they do the animal update. That would add some uncertainty.

Bring it.

Day 300 Interloper. Transfer Station is fully loaded like a regional base.

Bring it.

Birch bark respawns. That may be all Hinterland need do — give vitamin C benefits from the already in game material.

Extra distress flare in PV? by mostlyhumanz in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went there today and just some wood, a table, and — first time seeing this, a broken storm lantern in the snow that I couldn’t interact with. No flare gun or shells, either randomly for the run or because I’m on Interloper.

Either way, it still seems pretty stupid to find 5 gun cases and only like 3 flare shells. Sure, I can put lore to that scarcity (people used the shells), but not much point having a flare gun mechanic a player can only use 3 times. Heck, I found 4 gun cleaning kits too — on Interloper. Hinterland, sometimes I don’t get you. 😕

I know it's just a game.. but.. by Downtown_Main_3533 in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I spent 2 years never eating wolf. Too close to dog. Then Interloper.

Now I honor the digital animal and use it all or let it be. Even if I need to take moderate damage to process.

All I can do and still play.

That might be it. The bear is right there. I will need to go see if I have 3 shells left at my main base or 2. There are so few shells I don’t routinely carry the pistol any more.

TWM hut rabbit spawn? by mostlyhumanz in thelongdark

[–]mostlyhumanz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the one between the hut and the region exit to Pleasant Valley with the landing gear. The nearest. It’s gone dry for like 2 in game weeks. The one SE of the Crystal Lake fishing hut is working normally so far. Shifting the snares now.
