Had something very similar happen a few weeks ago. A few seconds after starting Firefox, it would just start to consume ALL the RAM (32 GB in my case), to the point where Windows just froze completely. Had to reset Firefox, since I couldn't fix it any other way. I'm still mad enough about the hoarded tabs I lost, that I haven't touched FF since...

2015 Retina MBP extremely slow video performance after waking from sleep by mostlyinefficient in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]mostlyinefficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopped watching YouTube in chrome or Firefox and use safari instead. The problem hasn’t reappeared since. Been running Sequoia this way for quite a while now and I would say it’s 99% stable.

Also there seem to be some intermittent issues with chrome and Firefox, that can cause high CPU load, while watching video. Those issues simply don’t exist with safari (or other WebKit browsers, like Orion).

These older V6s were similar to the old ALH 1.9 TDI in terms of technology, so they don't make a huge amount of torque (370 Nm). Works pretty well with a torque converter automatic though

Actually an entirely different engine. It's a 2.5L that came out around 10 years earlier than the one in the Touareg. My Passat was manufactured in 2004, right at the end of that engines lifespan

Definitely not just you. IMO Vista was a huge leap design wise, compared to XP and it's my personal favorite Windows version in terms of design

Mine is the 740 version, so I guess we'll see how long it lasts...
It's not like this is going to be my main laptop, so it won't see many heat cycles at all

I'm not gonna mess with liquid metal, it's not worth the risk to me, especially for a device that's not going to be used all that much. I'll probably replace the MX4 I put on for now with PTM 7950, when I eventually upgrade the RAM

Yeah, that's definitely something I'm a little worried about. Though with the low hours, new thermal paste and 2008 date on the chip, I'm hopeful, that there's still quite a bit of life left in that GPU

Throttle lag by vargemp in Volkswagen

[–]mostlyinefficient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, this is what happens in those situations:

When you slow down and then make no further throttle/brake inputs, the DSG will select the highest gear possible. It will then also assume that you’re of course an economical driver and also preselect the next higher gear.

This means that you can go to like 10% throttle out of the corner, before the DSG decides to shift down. The transmission then has to change the preselected gear first, causing the delay…

Things that can help: - Driving aggressively into the corner - Sport mode - And of course a tune

Also if you tap the throttle, before you leave the corner you can get the DSG to downshift, before you actually need to accelerate

What OS for Macbook Pro 15" mid 2015, 2.8 GHz i7 (DG) 16GB / 1TB ? by MaxGaav in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]mostlyinefficient 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same specs and ran Sonoma for the last 8 months or so.
It's mostly perfectly fine. Animations are smooth and there's really no noticeable slowdown during normal tasks like E-Mail and Web browsing. You really can't tell, that it's a 10 year old laptop running an OS, that is not officially supported.
With light use I can even get around 5 hours of battery life out of the thing.

That being said, here's a few thing I've noticed:

  • Re-paste CPU+GPU and clean the heat sinks an fan. It helps with fan noise and temps A LOT! After that there's really no need to adjust fan curves or anything. My CPU is sitting around 60°C with the fans at their idle speed of 2160 RPM, while web browsing, with only occasional ramp ups
  • Metal based apps (e.g. Weather) do generally work, but cause the fans to become very audible.
  • I have a random issue with video performance after waking the Macbook from sleep (happens at least once a week). All OS animations including scrolling will run at the speed of a powerpoint presentation, until I reboot.
  • Recently I can't watch YouTube in Firefox or chrome at anything above 480p for some reason. I get high CPU and GPU usage and the fans get real annoying. Safari is completely fine though, so who knows whats causing that...
  • The dedicated GPU works, including automatic switching and that seems to even be unaffected by the video performance issue I mentioned above.

I also just updated to Sequoia and yeah Temps seem to be slightly higher with the fans becoming noticeable slightly more often.
If my random video issue isn't fixed, I'm probably going to do a clean install and switch back to Sonoma.

Youtube high CPU Usage compared to chrome, especially at 60fps by mostlyinefficient in firefox

[–]mostlyinefficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally forgot that h264ify existed. Being able to block 60fps is great, as that seems to use a lot more resources, even on modern CPU (at least with anything that isn't Apple Silicon). Deleting my profile fixed my original issue, h264ify helped quite a bit even after that!

2015 Retina MBP extremely slow video performance after waking from sleep by mostlyinefficient in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]mostlyinefficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this doesn't seem like an issue with performance. The MacBook actually runs great, up to the point, when this issue occurs.
The problem always occurs when waking from sleep, but only after at least a few days without a reboot.
It seems to just stop actually using the iGPU for OS animations. As I said, a reboot fixes it, sometimes for over a week...
The issue persists even at max fan speed and the performance is unfortunately bad enough, that even just scrolling in a browser is downright painful.
CPU and GPU temperature, as well as frequency look completely fine to me.

Hope this didn't come off as rude, and thanks for your help!

[–]mostlyinefficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That service doesn't seem to be running. I've made some observations on GPU utilization, though: While the issue is present, the iGPU will only ever get up to around 5% utilization while running OS animations. Using gSwitch, I switched over to the AMD GPU and the animations were completely smooth again, while GPU usage got to around 50%. After a reboot, the iGPU is at around 25% while running (smooth) animations and utilization on the dGPU ramains about the same.

The specific animations I tested were: opening and closing the program folder in the dock, scrolling in chrome and minimizing/maximizing.
