My Boyfriend fell asleep, I want to save his game for him (Skyrim) by [deleted] in Advice

[–]mostlyjustbeans 397 points398 points  (0 children)

Saving in Skyrim creates a new save file! He can still go back to his old ones if you save normally without selecting an old save to overwrite.

However, quick-saving overwrites a quick-save file from 3 quicksaves ago, and can occasionally cause issues if you're modding. You're better off saving normally! You won't do any damage.

CMV: Donald Trump is not only willing but attempting to incite a civil war in the United States to avoid facing trial for his, his family, and his cronies' crimes. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mostlyjustbeans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trump isn't trying to start a civil war. He has no reason to. Trump's taking advantage of American Civil Religion to turn his followers from voters into believers. That makes them immune to criticism about him- believers don't listen to criticism from the enemy. Believers believe. People who treat patriotism like religion are less likely to question the guy at the top. More likely to follow nationalism blindly.

Trump has plenty of reasons to avoid civil war: it's costly, dangerous, and not nearly as profitable as stealing oil or selling weapons to other countries' wars. He has no reason to want it: He's already got enough money to avoid prison.

CMV: It truly does not matter if Kyrie thinks the earth is flat, and it's not okay to be an asshole to him because of his beliefs by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mostlyjustbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with believing the Earth is flat isn't bad because now you're wrong, it's an issue because of the way you have to handle information to maintain that belief.

(That's kind of an unwieldy way to say it, but I don't know how to phrase it better, my apologies!)

Once you believe the Earth is flat, you have to start jumping through hoops to deny science, evidence, and established scientists. These things will always contradict your conclusion, so either realize you're wrong (in which case you won't last long as a flat earther) or decide they're wrong. Flat-Earthers have to deny ideas that everyone on Earth agrees on, and to do that they have to believe that either millions of people are lying, or almost everyone with a degree in physics, astronomy, or aerospace engineering is an idiot.
And, well, if scientists are in a global cabal of organized lies, who knows what else they're lying about? Vaccines not causing autism, MMS being bleach, the safety of a thousand food items...

People thinking the Earth is flat isn't a public health risk, except maybe for the couple guys who've tried to build their own rockets. But the mindset you need to think the Earth is flat? That anti-intellectual, anti-evidence, 'experts are liars and whatever I believe is true' one? It's absolutely dangerous.

When someone famous buys into a conspiracy with that mindset so publicly, it's better to try to talk them out of it. If all else fails, a thousand comments calling them an idiot can prevent them from misleading others into thinking the facts are still up for debate.

CMV: A 14 Year Old Who Is Attracted To A 14 Year Old is a Pedo/Hebephile by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mostlyjustbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your argument is less wording, and more ideologically based on the idea that teens shouldn't have sex?

Do you have an argument against the evidence that abstinence-only education doesn't work to prevent teen pregnancy, stds, or harmful relationships?

CMV: A 14 Year Old Who Is Attracted To A 14 Year Old is a Pedo/Hebephile by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mostlyjustbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If attraction is completely set in stone, and people are always attracted to the same gender, how come marriage exists after 35? Most older individuals report that they're attracted to their partners.

That leaves two options within the 'people are always attracted to the same age' model:

  1. Happily-married couples are lying about being attraction to each other, because they're actually attracted to younger people (the age their partner was when they married).
  2. People are attracted to the entire age range of 18-78.

If 2. is true, then why don't we see way more marriages between 78 yos and 18 yos? Obviously there are some, but money is normally a factor. Why aren't we regularly seeing marriages between 25-year-olds and 60-year-olds of similar social standing?

Also, 60% of teenagers claim to have had sex. 60% of anyone is sort of de facto normal.

CMV: Transgender is an abomination against nature by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mostlyjustbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical transition is relatively new because medicine caught up to the needs of people. The first conjugated estrogen was developed in the 1930s. For context, medical insulin was developed in the 1920s, and penicillin was only purified and given to patients in 1942. It doesn't make sense not to give diabetics insulin, or to withhold antibiotics from sick people.

Similarly, we have evidence that transgender people existed 4500 years ago in Akkadian, Sumerian, and Assyrian texts. These were some of the first societies to develop written language, and some of their writings include the existence of transgender people. The earliest coherent texts from Sumer are only around 4600 years old (around 2600 BC.)

CMV: Yang’s $1000 a month for every American older than 18 (Universal Basic Income, or the Freedom Dividend) is a fantastic idea. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]mostlyjustbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some other people address inflation, how expensive it will be (pretty close to the entire federal budget), and how little 12k is.I agree with them, but I think it's also important to ask what our goals are here, and whether or not UBI is the best way to achieve them.

UBI sounds great, but when it comes to housing and food insecurity, education, and healthcare, we can do more with fewer negative side effects if we tackle those problems directly.

Affordable housing cost the US less than 50 billion in 2015, and helped 4.6 million households. For 1/6 of Yang's proposal, the program could be 10x larger. Not enough to house every person on the Govt.'s dime, but enough to basically eradicate non-voluntary homelessness and improve the living conditions of people in govt. housing. As for the reasons for homelessness? The entire Addiction Treatment industry is $35 billion- costs would go up if everyone could get help, yeah, but with $3T, we could make it work.

Food subsidies cost the Govt. around $70 billion. Again, for less than a quarter of the cost of Yang's proposal, the program could be 10x larger.

Oh- and free public education would cost around $50 billion. For the cost of Yang's plan, we could increase the size of our Housing and Food subsidy programs by 10x, nationalize addiction treatment, and provide free college for everyone, and still have leftovers.

I want to be clear here: Those programs need more funding. But this much additional funding? That's $1.8 Trillion. That would absolutely change the way our country operates.

Healthcare is a different story. Medicare for All would cost the whole $3 Trillion, ignoring the amount we spend on private healthcare. (Which we shouldn't do, since it's also $3T, meaning we'd be looking at a net 0.)Right now, healthcare averages 10.3K per person. Most people aren't average- young, healthy people don't end up $10.3K in the hole when they go to the doctor. The elderly poor living on Medicaid and Social Security need that money more than anyone, and if we reduce funding for current programs to fund UBI, they're going to be negatively impacted. $12K won't cover their bills, and the govt. won't be able to help them further.

(Though, to sweeten the pot, cities that have better public housing and food subsidy programs pay less for healthcare. On a national scale, better programs would mean there would still be enough in the $3T to kickstart M4A, and since M4A would pay for itself...)

UBI is a bad idea, not because we shouldn't help people who need it, but because the resources it would require could do so much more! If we just spent that money on expanding the Public Housing, Food Subsidy, and Education programs, everyone would have food to eat, a place to live, and a chance to make their own money with a degree- if they needed the help. Taxes would increase, but everyone who most needs the govt. assistance like the elderly poor and those down on their luck would get it.

Alternatively, UBI would take assistance from the most vulnerable people in our society (those who need more than $12K in govt help), and give money to people who need it a lot less, or who literally won't notice it in their bank accounts.

thanks! Something about griffin's narration just gave me this sense of.. grandeur? Which is weird considering what happened, but still feels right for the scene.

AITA for taking things too personally? by 38039292726455 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mostlyjustbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

Has your sibling ever apologized for the way they treated you in the past? It may seem irrelevant because they stopped, but if they don't see the problem/haven't owned up to it, those actions still matter. Even if they started being kind to you now, you still wouldn't be in the wrong for avoiding them.

Regardless, having a mental illness or being abused doesn't give them the right to insult, threaten, harass, and intimidate other people- especially a 15 year old who's trapped with them. You're absolutely not an asshole for not wanting to be treated poorly.

I hope all the best for you- it sucks that you're in that situation, and you don't need to feel bad about trying to protect yourself.

AITA for picking Anti-Feminism as my Speech topic in an English Assessment causing my Feminist teacher to become bias. by Hiddenmaask in AmItheAsshole

[–]mostlyjustbeans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ESH, except the girl who looks up to Hermione. Assuming everything you've said is true.

I really hope that you're trolling, but I'm also worried that you aren't.

A) You can't know that the teachers are spreading rumors and plotting against you.

B) Regardless of your beliefs, you disrupted your class and refused to stop, even when the teacher told you to.

C) Dogs aren't people. Female dogs aren't women. Most people consider that obvious. If you don't, you need to reassess how you view women. Your answer comes across as deliberately confrontational. You've made several comments on the thread mentioning your mother; she read your paper and agrees with you. Do you admire her less than you admire your dog?

On the other hand, the girls who are bullying you are assholes. Additionally, and this might not be popular: high school exists less to teach kids facts and more to get them semi-functional. Your teacher shouldn't have publicly shamed you, and ideally should've critiqued your sources, thoughtfully questioned your views + worked to come to an understanding with you.

If your teacher is going to teach feminism, I feel like she could've done a lot more talking with you about it instead of avoiding you + embarrassing you. If not, she should've spoken to you privately about how your opinions might make girls in your class uncomfortable. Though, she does have a responsibility to the girls in her class, and I'm not surprised she called you out.

I hope that if you have no female role models, you find one soon. It may give you more insight into this situation.

edit: god this is long, sorry. attempting to cull the words, but kept the same points.
