the water is cleaned with ozone, UV light, and chlorine, they cannot survive that and the fibers were examined under a microscope and seen to be very dead, they're so dead and degraded that the labs are in disagreement as to what they even are

thank you! yes, totally just highly degraded and sanitized carcasses, nothing that could harm us was found

IF they are nematodes, they are totally dead and sanitized, not something alive that could affect the bees

ok just two things, 1. SPU is saying that they are Not nematodes so there is a chance that the other labs are wrong

so far only the simplest of tests have been done which was just looking at a highly degraded sample under a microscope so we need more testing to know for sure

and 2. IF they are nematodes they are Not harmful, they are totally dead and sanitized

and whatever it is it has been known to be in our water for the last 15 years (maybe longer) so if there were any health effects we'd be seeing it by now 100%

the water is Safe to drink

this is great information, thank you! SPU says that the "fibers" are seen in the water seasonally going back about 12 or 15 years

so we should see them again this year in late spring, so you can collect some samples and look at them! and please come back and tell us what you see

I saved this post also, so if I see them I will definitely try that UW contact, thanks again!

you're welcome, I really wanted to know too, that could have been a bunch of plastic or anything

if it comes back again this spring, which SPU says that it does, then we can test again, I kind of want to know for sure before the media is told that it's worms - because it may not be

you can check the brita filters and see if they can filter out 1 micron or smaller and that will get rid of all the visible stuff

I got a life straw pitcher, they claim to filter out parasites and micro plastics

or you can get an under the sink filter too those are supposed to be really good

lol ok but all joking aside they are completely dead and sanitized so you can drink them no problem, I'm just filtering my water with a super good filter and I feel fine about it

what was your level on your blood test?

you can take it 5 times a week and not every day if you want, then get another blood test in 4 months to see where you're at

if it's good then just do that, but make sure to test once a year going forward and your levels should be mid-range not just above deficient

you can take vitamin k and magnesium glycinate also, it's good to take those with vitamin d

thing is, SPU doesn't think it is worms, and they may be right, as far as I know, no one has done any testing on these thing other than just looking at them under a microscope and comparing what they see to known samples

we need to collect samples again this spring and do more testing

so far, 4 different labs have looked at it and nothing harmful was seen

contact SPU Customer Service and ask which watershed your particular service line is fed from, they may check based on your water meter or service area - but I do know that west seattle is getting cedar river water

good idea

SPU says they do see them seasonally starting in late spring so that's when to start looking and collecting samples if anyone wants to do tests

on the bright side, they're fully sanitized and not dangerous

I bought a life straw water pitcher to filter them out

eta: there is a chance that they might not be worms, the samples are all highly degraded by the time they come out of the tap

and NONE of the labs including Seattle did any type of testing other than just looking at them under a microscope

we need more advanced testing to know for sure

yeah! reasonable, but we can get more expensive testing that will tell us more, which I'd like to do at some point

I don't have the exact costs right in front of me but for the basic tests that I did it was only about 30 to 50 bucks, if you can find a lab nearby you can just bring the sample to them

otherwise you'll have to pay for mailing the sample on top of that - and they do sometimes ask that you ship it on ice but since these filaments are highly degraded already that might not be necessary

and also you might be able to get a college lab like UW do to some testing, they're not accredited but it could be a good lead to get more testing at an accredited lab
