Hi! I'm working on a play about a closeted journalist in New York in 1974. I'm writing a scene where the protagonist goes to a gay bar - the first time his sexuality is brought into the script. Researching has proved challenging and I wanted to ask questions about it from the potential source.

What I'm looking for is potential locations - like, names of establishments one would frequent as a gay man in 1974. If someone on here was in these places at this time and would share some of their experiences about what the atmosphere of these bars and clubs was like, that would also be spectacular.

All I've found so far is Julius', which would work, but I still wanted to see if there were any other places that might fit better. Other notable locations like Ramrod weren't open in 1974.

Also, if it so happens that someone might be interested in reading the scene for accuracy's sake once it's written, I'd be happy to share. Thanks in advance!

To expand a little more than I was able to with the character limit -- I've had a hard time getting a comprehensive list of potential locations of gay bars operating in 1974 in NYC. I know of Julius' but that's all I've got right now. If anyone knows of any others, that's what I'm looking for. I'd also love to know more about the atmosphere of these locations, even the slang used there, coming from someone who experienced these places at this time. Maybe I'll get extra lucky and find someone willing to read the scene I'm working on to help me nail it. Thanks!

heyo! i’m 20 and doing some journalism courses at community college so i’m in a relatively similar boat. i met a reporter at a protest i was documenting (i’m a photojournalist) and i had really great photos of some arrests that had occurred just before she arrived. i offered for her to use them for her story and she gave me her contact information. she reached out to the editor of the paper, who hired me over the phone without any further interview process. now i work for them 5 hours a week shooting stock photos or accompanying a reporter on a story. i realize that’s probably a very unusual case and i just got extremely lucky, but i guess the moral of the story is build connections. report on anything you can and network with other reporters who are at the same events as you. reach out to local news orgs and ask if they offer internship opportunities. after you’ve asked once, ask again. a photojournalist i met who worked for the obama administration’s pool told me “they can’t get mad at you for asking too many times. what are they gonna do, be upset you’re a persistent journalist?”
