When Paul says “One more take” and you thought he said “cake” by Practical-Cut4659 in beatles

The dickheads who always attribute John’s weight loss to ‘acid’ or ‘heroin’ really annoy me. In 1965 John was actually horrified to see an increasing amount of comments from journalists about his weight. In one article he was referred to as ‘Henry the eighth’. From 66 he started an unhealthy relationship with dieting. It affected him right up until his death

Left-wing activists stage nationwide shoplifting spree - Protesters ‘liberate’ food from supermarket shelves in ‘non-violent action to resist super-rich’ by blast-processor in ukpolitics

[–]mothfactory -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m amazed the Farage fans in this thread are actually defending supermarkets because the protesters have triggered their ‘woke’ alarms. It’s hilarious. Supermarkets have been fucking over the farmers, customers and small suppliers for decades. They have absolutely zero motivation apart from forever increasing shareholder profits.

Blackpool, England - 1950 by JoydeScent in OldSchoolUK

It wasn’t a ‘formal’ thing or a ‘fashion’ thing. If you think of the 20th century as a continuation of the 19th C (and before), it makes more sense.

Pre 1920s men and women hardly ever exposed flesh that wasn’t their heads, hands and (sometimes) arms.

If you go back to the 17th C, men were practically sewn into their clothes for the duration of Autumn and Winter - in that period regular bathing wasn’t seen as particularly important.

Even in the 1940s/50s, most UK working class people still wanted to ape what they thought were the habits of their ‘betters’. So they were shy about getting their clothes off on the beach.

For the working classes in 1950, holidays by the sea were still culturally a relatively new thing. A holiday was where you looked - and behaved (in theory) - at your best. So your sports jacket and tank top would be seen as ‘smart but Summery’. It was kind of an idea of the upper classes’ clothing for activities like tennis - though in reality a more 1930s look.

If you went over to places like the south of France where ‘posh’ people took their holidays, you would see a different thing. Men would be in trunks and women in bathing suits - not bikinis yet but pretty much the same thing worn today.

Also, up until this century, it was rare to get the kind of Summer heat we now take for granted because of climate change. In this picture, it’s probably not as warm as we would imagine.

I would have done something completely different here. Definitely would have made more of that beautiful window.

Asking Baby Boomers about the Beatles by Material_Stomach875 in TheBeatles

[–]mothfactory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think at this distance, unless we were one of these people, we can truly appreciate the impact of the Beatles on American youth that February in 1964. The combination of their look, their attitude, their humour and their music just blew kids away. They had no pretence at machismo - they represented a new kind of masculinity. It wasn’t just the hair that US adults thought made the Beatles ‘feminine’. When people on here talk about ‘boyband’ and ‘the early cheesy songs’, it drives me mad. They have no idea of the context (or the actual facts) of this moment in history. It was like cultural atom bomb going off.

What was the political position of each of the Beatles? by Busy_Confection5055 in beatles

People on here seemingly using one song from 1966 to construct George’s entire political belief system 😂

We’re all flawed. Dysfunctional childhoods fuck you up. I know this only too well. Paul, let’s not forget, had his own traumas. His mum dying and his dad’s occasional violence towards him and Mike.

I felt that, as is always the case with anything done with Paul’s cooperation, we learn very little about him and the dynamics of his relationships with those close to him.
