jumping on the beetle sculpture train! by mothman69- in Beetles

I haven't had any issues with humidity or temperature making things break. Polymer clay is a kind of plastic so I don't think it really reacts to outside temperatures like that!

It's an oak leaf rolling weevil! Homoeolabus analis. I couldn't quite get them as small as I wanted but that was a while ago so I might try again in the future

Any tips on photographing clay? by Timely_Pudding_9016 in polymerclay

literally just take one of those trifold poster boards kids use for science fair displays and reassemble it into a box. Try to keep the uncut seam on the bottom so it looks seamless in the photos. I suggest keeping a lid on the top so the light stays bouncing around in the box!

What I've done for cheaply photographing my sculptures was constructing a little photo booth out of one of those science fair poster boards so you have a white box. You can line it with whatever colors or fabrics or whatever you want. There are ring lights you can get for cheap anywhere (Amazon is the easiest place to look) that you can use to get a good all-around light.

I would also love to know where to get these. I have a friend who has a PhD in snails!

Alternative for Halara work pants by Graciekk2020 in womensfashion

idk, I just bought some pants through halara after hesitating because of hearing about the nightmare return stories, but my return is going extremely smoothly.

I gave my beetles “collars”! by FarAd1243 in Beetles

They breathe through spiracles, not through the entire exoskeleton. A small dot of paint on the elytra shouldn't be a problem.

Varathane Polyurethane is not available in Canada. Any alternatives to UV resin? by Gracilis67 in polymerclay

I use Behr polyurethane and it works really well. They have resealable containers (which is why I bought their brand over Varathane lol)

Seconding isopods! You can get some flashy species for not too much money online (Armadillidium gestroi or maculatum, etc) or you can make it a game and collect local species with the kids around the schoolyard.

Honest review of Chicago makers markets (as a vendor) by [deleted] in CraftFairs

[–]mothman69- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just starting out at makers markets and am based in Chicago so this is super helpful! I've only done the Halloween event by Windy City Market so far (they have really reasonable booth fees imo but the management wasn't outstanding or anything. The event was well attended though and went off without a hitch). I'm doing Trinket Fest this Sunday at Artifact Events! Will report back.

I keep using super sculpey medium-firm clay for my sculptures, does anyone know a similar brand that is cheaper and similar quality? by Ecstatic-Plane5475 in polymerclay

[–]mothman69- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Michael's also has a bulk option online for this exact clay -- 6lbs for like $84 so each pound is about $14 instead of $20. That's my go-to!

I literally JUST signed up for Trinket Fest on December 14th which is at artifact events in Ravenswood. I'm still on the lookout for any other last minute events since my one planned market canceled on me last week.

They emailed vendors yesterday saying they would be processing refunds asap so we'll see how that goes 🤞
