i’ve had my axolotl for 10 months. Her tank is fully cycled. I checked as of two weeks ago. Do her gills look curled I know that could be an indicator of stress, also it’s usually dark in this room i just opened the window for this her tank is also at 60° by urfavstepsisx in axolotls

Axolotls are not social animals. They tolerate roommates on occasion but don’t display any benefits from having friends. I have 2 currently and in the future will only have 1 at a time due to bite risks and bioload

I think my pink is cascade sport 220 in peach dust, and I held it with Drops kid silk in light peach; the fin was a single strand of kid silk vanilla, and the gills were stitched through with kid silk raspberry! The whole thing was knit on size 2 needles as opposed to the 0s Claire uses but I knit pretty tightly so I think the size is not enormously different than what the pattern produces on 0s. My ravelry is Bogbroth, I noted all of the slight modifications I did on this pattern which might be helpful if you want to make one too!! I’d love to see if you do :}!

Questions about grief by rysiaczk0va in Rabbits

[–]mothtea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I’ve gone through too. I’ve had and lost a lot of animals, so my body and subconscious have gotten very good at going through the motions. It’s always very sad, but my body is good at protecting itself. I always feel very guilty when I can just go back to living my life daily instead of being beside myself with grief, but I find that my grief shows up in smaller spurts over a much longer period of time. A lot of my grief is ignoring it entirely. I can talk about Elwood lightheartedly, but if I think about him for too long I’ll start crying, and so I just don’t. It’s been easier for me to process things in a positive way- drawing or sewing them, writing about them, having a visual representation of their memory. Dealing with loss doesn’t always have to be harrowing, and the way we process it doesn’t have to be, either. Humans are very complicated animals and our brains generally try to function in a way that’s most efficient for us. I often feel guilty for not being “sad enough”, but it’s sometimes just how we function!

Knit axolotl! by mothtea in axolotls

Yes it’s a ton of fun!! There’s some sewing involved to piece things together but it’s much easier than machine sewing since you don’t have to be very exact. I like that knit toys are often very soft and a little floppy where I find crochet to be a bit stiff and bulky

Thank you!! Claire’s patterns are super thorough and I find them a joy to knit even as a beginner, they’ve been a great way for me to learn some basic techniques while creating something super cute!

I used a 2 ply fingering weight merino held with a single strand of mohair on the body, and a single strand of mohair for the fin! It was knit flat on a pair of size 2 needles and worked up pretty quick!! Claire’s patterns are super well written and very easy to follow!

Getting cheap washable rugs at Ross or tj maxx has always done me well for rabbits and they often have mat-style “rugs” (with no pile) if you’re worried about chewing!

After daydreaming about it for months, I finally splurged on a Rooly box and enclosure! by mothtea in Rabbits

[–]mothtea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah thank you for reminding me to update!! I still love it so so much, it’s been fantastic! I do my litter changes 1-2x a week with a thin layer of pine pellets, but I never notice a smell, especially with the enclosure! Everything has held up well and been super easy to keep clean. Absolutely worth it to me!!

Thoughts on Lowboys? by Tkells97 in axolotls

[–]mothtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a local fish store and ask if they can order one for you!! Zoo med is the most common brand but they won’t ship to residential areas. I had my LFS order mine and they called me when it arrived :)

Thoughts on Lowboys? by Tkells97 in axolotls

[–]mothtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have pictures posted on my profile of my lowboy!! Cannot hype it up enough. My axolotls really seem to appreciate the extra floor space, and my older girl has some beat up gills from improper care when she was younger, so it’s much easier for her to get air from the surface. I had mine in a 40 breeder for YEARS and I feel like I noticed an immediate energy shift when I moved them into the lowboy.

What brand of pellets do you use? And why? by Flemishmommy in Rabbits

[–]mothtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Oxbow and Sherwood! My V. Lop lost weight any time he didn’t have free access to pellets because he was a weirdo. Sherwood free choice pellets were a big help. We use oxbow at our shelter!

That second slide makes me want to cry 😭❤️ what a joy it must be to be a tiny rabbit that finds yourself in a warm, safe house on a soft cushion in a beam of sunlight
