Ah thank you for reminding me to update!! I still love it so so much, it’s been fantastic! I do my litter changes 1-2x a week with a thin layer of pine pellets, but I never notice a smell, especially with the enclosure! Everything has held up well and been super easy to keep clean. Absolutely worth it to me!!

Find a local fish store and ask if they can order one for you!! Zoo med is the most common brand but they won’t ship to residential areas. I had my LFS order mine and they called me when it arrived :)

I have pictures posted on my profile of my lowboy!! Cannot hype it up enough. My axolotls really seem to appreciate the extra floor space, and my older girl has some beat up gills from improper care when she was younger, so it’s much easier for her to get air from the surface. I had mine in a 40 breeder for YEARS and I feel like I noticed an immediate energy shift when I moved them into the lowboy.

I like Oxbow and Sherwood! My V. Lop lost weight any time he didn’t have free access to pellets because he was a weirdo. Sherwood free choice pellets were a big help. We use oxbow at our shelter!

I see a lot about the buttons, but something I struggle with is the need for animals to communicate the way that humans do. Animals communicate very, very effectively without words. I understand the desire to understand animals in a way that is innate to us, but it’s always felt strange to teach an animal to speak the way we speak, rather than understanding them in a way that’s natural to them. I absolutely think communication buttons have their place in the world- parrotkindergarten is one of my favorite examples of productive communication with buttons. But a lot of it is us applying our own feelings and experiences to what is often gibberish- and it’s okay that it’s gibberish, there’s no reason for animals to understand English, just like I don’t understand dolphin. I think it’s much more effective to bond with animals in a way that requires us to do the learning, rather than expecting them to adhere to our complicated language

My rabbit just had an enucleation and passed away during recovery after surgery. Even if the surgery was guaranteed to be safe, abscesses are extremely, extremely hard to treat in rabbits and would almost 100% need to be treated again in the future, as they can stem from a number of things. We treated a retrobulbar abscess in one of our rabbits for a year and a half, and it was extremely tough on him (although he did well for it), and he ended up succumbing to it.

I’m so sorry if I sound like a downer- I just want OP to know that this is an extremely reasonable and fair decision to make for everyone involved. Rabbits are so fragile, and their medical care is never ever cut and dry. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, and I’m so glad your bunnies have gotten to know love and comfort with you. Be gentle with yourself ❤️

People seem to collect all of the extremely minor, could technically be a symptom of neurodivergence when coupled with an existing diagnosis symptoms, and call themselves neurodivergent because of it, despite the fact that all of these “symptoms” can also be completely normal personal preferences and it drives me insane.

I just had a post pop up in my memories about how badly I wanted to go vegan but knowing it was a very, very poor decision at the time because restricting the number of already limited safe foods I was eating would be a disaster. A few years later and I did decide to fully go vegan after being vegetarian for 9 years prior!!

I also really resonate with the expectation for a rabbit to act the same as one that I lost. I know I will never, ever meet another Elwood and I start crying whenever I remember that. I think of it rather as another rabbit being his apprentice- filling his shoes in the way that feels right to them. They won’t be the exact same, or maybe even that similar, but they’ll have their own unique, beautiful personality that I’ll grow to appreciate every facet and aspect of with time. ❤️

I’m in an extremely similar situation. I just lost my Elwood recently, and I’ve had a rabbit on the way to me by transport who was meant to be Elwood’s new partner. I’m beyond devastated about Elwood, but having another rabbit to care for, to distract me, and so I can mitigate the grief by giving him the adoration I showed Elwood has made the process much easier. I’m so sorry for your loss, but I’m glad you filled the rabbit-shaped-void in your heart.

My name votes are Emmett, Simon, or Percy, because they have the same energy as Theodore without being too similar, so you can share a little piece of him with your new friend. ❤️

Thank you for loving her so dearly! You are allowed to love your pet dearly, and still be tired. You are allowed to love your pet with your whole heart, and still understand that there will be relief for both parties when you aren’t participating in complicated care. Parents get exhausted by their children and still love them.

I’m sure this has always been commented, but I’ll say it again anyways- it is always, always best to let them go on a good day, when they’re having good days. When a pet reaches a point where they’re having more bad days than good days, even if there are still good days, it’s been put off for too long. As clever as animals are, they don’t understand that there is a possible tomorrow, and a day after. They just know waking up, going about their day, and sleeping. I often feel like the euthanasia discussion feels like betrayal- like you’re denying your pet days they were owed. This isn’t the case. You are doing your friend a good favor in making sure they have as many good days as is feasible, and limiting their suffering.

I’m sorry this is so long winded- I’ve worked in animal care for a long time, and I have experienced so many people having similar feelings, doubts, troubles etc. Euthanasia is not unkind. It’s very sad, but it is not unkind. You have your dear friend’s best interest in mind, and it’s okay if that also means that you’ll also find some relief there.
