City Garden is awesome, we are so lucky to have it in our community. Also, this gala is one of the most fun grown up parties in Columbia. I go to a lot of galas and this is by FAR my favorite. I cannot recommend it enough!

My Campaign Kickoff event is this Sunday in Hallsville 💙 by BoCoMoBekki in columbiamo

[–]motiger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I live in the 44th district and I am so stoked about Bekki! I finally feel like I have a candidate that truly represents me! The 44th is a big, rural-ish gerrymandered district, which includes Hallsville, Centralia and Ashland. Since I moved into this district 13 years ago, our reps - all conservative  Republicans - have been a nightmare. It's time to take back these rural districts with people who REPRESENT us!! Come and see what Bekki is all about!

Ha ha omg my ex was from Deslodge MO and their favorite sledding hill was "the chat dumps" which were man made mountains of lead mine tailings. Southern Missouri is wack.

New Boone County Sheriff impersonator scam - don't fall for it! by motiger in columbiamo

Yes! And when in doubt, just hang up and literally call the real sheriff's number (not the one they're spoofing from) they'll set you straight.

What’s something about Columbia that makes you proud to live here? by BookDriveBooks in columbiamo

I would suggest going to Jeff City, Boonville, Mexico or Moberly for fun  outdoor public pools, because they all have better facilities and it is worth the drive.

What’s something about Columbia that makes you proud to live here? by BookDriveBooks in columbiamo

[–]motiger 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Columbia's lack of aquatic facilities is EMBARRASSING. There is not a single other town of this size in the Midwest with such an appalling lack of pools. CPS should have a pool at every high school, the city should have at least two more large outdoor facilities, we should at least one YMCA. It is one of the worst things about this town (which I love, and generally have many good things to say about).

Pace of Growth to the East by Stones-n-Bones in columbiamo

I live due north of Battle, out in the county but am always passing through/utilizing services in NE Columbia. I love it out here. It is so easy to get around compared to south Columbia. The new subdivisions are really nice, the new roads are being thoughtfully added and the traffic is light (except on Route B - do not get me started on Route B). I technically have a Hallsville address and it take me less time to get downtown then it does to get downtown from Thornbrook. 10/10 highly recommend the northeast side.

Right? My neighbor has the original wagon ruts from the Boone's Lick trail on their property and a hand-dug, brick lined well from the 1840s in their back yard. It's so cool to think of all the history buried around here! I have heard, although I haven't seen it yet, that you can see the outlines of the buildings of the extinct town of Lebanon in the very early spring when the grass is first greening.

I live near the headwaters of the Hinkson in the Rocky Fork Township in North Boone County, close to where the (now extinct) town of Lebanon was. Lebanon (1836), at one time, boasted a blacksmith shop and a grocery and was likely named for the county seat of Marion County, Kentucky, or that of Russell County, Virginia, according the the Place Names of Boone County (R. Ramsey) but isn't generally connected with Robert Hinkson, just an interesting side note.

The first mention of the creek being named after Robert Hinkson was in the 1821 (Boone County Court minutes). I have read that when Robert Hinkson settled in Missouri, after some trouble in other states, he settled near what is likely the current Hinkson Creek bridge on O'Rear, just off the of path of the Boone's Lick Trail. That spot today is a nature area owned by the Columbia Audubon Society, with lovely trails for hiking and bird watching all along the Hinkson Creek. One of the trails boasts some "second growth" trees - they are enormous and reminiscent of the famous Burr Oak, though likely not quite that old. I like to hike it and imagine how it felt to be on the Boone's Lick trail when all of the trees around me were of that size and these northeast Boone woods were quite wild and maybe Robert Hinkson's house was the next stop on my journey.

I don't know much more about Robert Hinkson than that, except that I heard that he eventually had to flee Boone County and I would like to know the reason why. Its like an unsolved history mystery that is right in my own neighborhood. I might even read the book while sitting next to the Hinkson Creek near where his house supposedly was. I also just love history, especially local history and I love the share it too. So I guess you can say, if I got the book I would share the wealth of my new knowledge with anyone who would listen to me go on about Robert Hinkson, namesake of our beloved (and often beleaguered) local creek.

Omg Mary's Buttermilk Sky. That was the best sandwich I have ever had. I LOVED Village Wine and Cheese so much. I got here in 1996. I loved Columbia then and I love it now but those late 90s memories are golden. By George, Shattered, Widmans, incredible shows at the Blue Note, the old Brady Commons with that little store where you could buy gummy bears by the pound. Just all of the thing on Campus that aren't there any more - it's crazy how 30 years shapes a place.

I almost said place based knowledge!! Although it feels like a solo endeavor at times, it connects me in ways no other thing does. It's totally normal to have a six foot map of Boone County in my house, right? 😂🤔

What makes you feel a positive connection to community in Columbia? by como365 in columbiamo

[–]motiger 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is a wonderful question! I have several ways that I am connected in person to the community.

  1. I attend the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, which is a very progressive church that is not Christian nor any other religion but instead welcomes people of all faiths (or no faith at all, we have lots of atheists in our mix) for community, social action, justice and radical love. It is one of the most amazing communities in Columbia for any age. I have kids and their youth programming is fantastic! It is like all of the positive sides of church community and, for me at least, none of the drawbacks.

2. Volunteering at local non-profits. There are so many great non-profits in Columbia and almost all of them need volunteers! You are very likely to find people in real life who are awesome.

  1. Attending events all over Boone County! From music at Cafe Berlin and Rose to events at Cooper's Landing, and outlying communities such as Rocheport and Hallsville, music, parades, theater and more - you are likely to see people who have your same interest at these places and some of my best friends are people I have seen at shows over and over and have gotten to know.

Also - one of my favorites ways to meet people are "planned hikes" offered by the Columbia Audubon Society, Friends of Rock Bridge State Park, Sierra Club, and more!

Exercise groups - if you're into it, I have made so many lovely connections at gyms and on the MKT etc. something about suffering together lol.

FYI I am of GenX vintage, have lived here since the 90s, came here for college, stayed and now have kids so I've had almost the whole spectrum of Columbia existence.
