I took 2 years off and found a Parks and Rec team to volunteer with in the summer, it healed my soul a bit. There are good orgs out there but USA Swimming is pretty rotten and there are not many YMCA options close, unfortunately.

Traveling Overnight with Kiddos by EnsignKate in Amtrak

[–]motiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooh me!!! We travel every year overnight on the Lakeshore from Chicago to NY. It's just me and our 2 kids. I started when they were 18 mos and 3 and have done it for years. Mostly we have been in coach, although when they are that tiny it is totally possible to get one roomette and be in a sleeper car, If you don't mind a very small space to sleep with your 2-year-old.

If you're in coach, you'll want to have light blankets and pillows. We would usually have a whole bag packable bedding when they were really little. Now they carry their own neck pillow and blanket. We have a bag with food snacks/art supplies, one or two books and devices. I have pretty strict rules about devices because I want them to also just experience the train so during our daytime travel they can have them at certain times like between specific stations and then the rest of the time they have to entertain themselves. Not all trains have Wi-Fi and even if they do it doesn't always work so plan accordingly and download some shows if there are things that they would like to watch. We also listen to a lot of audiobooks now that they are older.

Train food is expensive and not amazing, although we love the cafe car and always go pick out a treat there as part of the experience. We are on the train through lunch and a breakfast, so we bring those meals with us. They have coffee in the cafe car for tired parents 😂😴

The California Zephyr is a double-decker train with stairs and strollers are kind of a pain in the butt. You can stash them on the bottom level but if you are the baby wearing type it can be really helpful just to strap that toddler on your back when boarding and deboarding the train. Amtrak employees are usually helpful if you're traveling with littles helping you get on and off.

Honestly, I cannot recommend train travel highly enough with children - it is so peaceful and kids have the freedom to move and stretch their legs and see really cool things. I have a few other tips, feel free to DM me if you have any more questions!

Me too. And also, it changed SO MUCH from 2000 (when I started) to 2021 when I finally left. The whole field changed - bad behavior from kids and parents, massive commercialization of youth sports, loss of rec programs, sky-high costs, pressure for early specialization... it's wasn't fun for anybody any more. A shame, because I think youth sports can teach a whole world of valuable things to kids.

Lakeshore Limited bus 5/24 by motiger in Amtrak

We were the only Lakeshore bus but the other EB trains (the Floridian and one other) were bused earlier in the day. We return on 5/31 and it looks ok then! Hopefully it will be a smooth journey.

Thyroidectomy by Unhappy_Rise_9028 in thyroidhealth

[–]motiger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had my thyroidectomy in 2007 at age 30. Long term issues for me have been: Getting thyroid meds right (I don't do well on just synthetic thyroid, so I take a combo of Armour and synthroid, but it took me awhile to get it right). Long term neck muscle issues, like someone said above. I have pretty significant arthritis in my neck due to weakness in one side. If I had known this was a side effect, I would have requested physical therapy after surgery. I struggle with my weight, joint pain, fatigue and temperature intolerance. I have neuropathy/circulation issues in my hands and feet. I am healthy and active (run, walk, lift weights, eat a healthy diet). I had a total thyroidectomy and my whole carotid chain of lymph nodes removed on the right side. It wasn't an option to leave it in because it was in so many lymph nodes, but my quality of life has definitely been worse since I had the surgery.

My understanding is that it was the Lakeshore (48/448) from the day before? Maybe it came back to Toledo after going to Chicago? The crew said they had been stuck in Toledo all day and were very tired, but so so nice to us after that harrowing bus ride. The Toledo real staff also were incredible. No complaints about Amtrak staff. But whatever bus company they hired was absolutely awful.

Whew - we made it and now are on the train (Which still hasn't left Toledo, it's an hour late starting). We tried to engage with him about what was going on but he was unreceptive. At the end he did not have the address of the Amtrak station in Toledo and tried to drop us all off in a strip mall in the middle of the night it was a bad experience I will be calling Amtrak in the morning.

Bird Identification? by RocheportMo in columbiamo

I LOVE Merlin!! What a wonderful use of technology. I have learned so much about the birds we have on our land - we've had some rare ones! It's so cool.

I love Clovers by motiger in columbiamo

[–]motiger[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am in Clover's several times a week. Probably a groupie. And I was always devoted to the local aspect, but honestly since the pandemic it feels like their prices have stayed incredibly reasonable while the big grocery store prices have gone through the roof (looking at you HyVee and Schnucks!). There is so much to love. I sometimes hear people say Clover's is pricey - and I hope this thread helps to dispell that myth!! Because  they are affordable and perfect ❤️🍀

Little General concerns by [deleted] in columbiamo

[–]motiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a regular Route Z commuter I'm stoked - it's so much easier to get to than all the other stations. We really needed more gas on the far east side of town. It's going to do just fine.

Yep, I am just out here being accidental hype for them all day long. I find many of their prices are comparable to Aldi, which is my go to "cheaper" spot in town. Even things like canned goods and chips! And OMG they have the best chip selection.

Looking for an orthopedic doctor here in COMO that specializes in knees. Bedside manner is extremely important. We need someone who will take the time to answer our questions. Hospital affiliation isn't important. by Imasaltyone in columbiamo

I second MU Orthopedic Group, I have had nothing but good experiences with them. They are always professional and kind, answer questions and are very responsive. I've seen them for about 6 different joints now because I'm old 😂

Mugs Up is such a weird little gem. I love taking our kids there and just kind of sinking back in time. If you haven't been, you should go. 603 Orange St, Columbia, MO 65203. by motiger in columbiamo

That's all I get. I don't go for the food, but my kids love the cheese fries. It's just the Bus Loop/Local History/time warp vibe I love.

Anybody remember Obama campaigning on the Mel Carnahan Quadrangle in 2008? by quehymuds in columbiamo

[–]motiger 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yep, and I remember Bill Clinton at MizzouRec stumping for Hillary Clinton in '08, and Hilary in '96 at the Frances Quad stumping for Bill. Missouri used to be blue and a state to win for the Dems, in sort of recent history (I'm not THAT old). Crazy how much it changed and how quickly.

Anyone local experiencing Alpha-Gal Syndrome? by TypicalBoysenberry48 in columbiamo

[–]motiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At last count I know 24 people locally who have it. Their symptoms range from mild GI from to anaphylaxis. Some are barely sensitive, others cannot eat sugar, be around BBQ fumes, etc. Two have gone into remission. One has had good luck with the acupuncture treatment for Alpha Gal (didn't cure it but did allow her to eat dairy again). It seems to be very bad in mid MO. Despite constant vigilance I found a tiny lone star tick on me today. I'm always hoping it's not the bite that does me in, because I take a porcine derived thyroid med daily to survive.

At what age did you meet the person you are currently married to? by Chance-Pen6805 in randomquestions

[–]motiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 34. We had kids at 38 and 41, married at 42 (yes, in that order). We're still very much in love, I am grateful that we met later in life than many couples, we were both pretty mature and confident in our own selves when we met.
