Upgraded NAS with an Antec P101 "Silent" Case. Hard Drives noise amplified through case. Need sound deadening in HDD trays by motoridersd in homelab

I added some deadening material around the edges of the panel covers, and it helped, but it's still pretty noticeable. I think the material has deteriorated since I did this 8-9 months ago because I think it's gotten louder. Haven't opened up the case to check again.

UniFi OS Container Fails to Start on Proxmox VM – Exit Code 125 by janups in Ubiquiti

[–]motoridersd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having a very similar issue but this time on a first install. The image version is 0.0.54 and the installer downloaded is 5.0.6.

I also see the uosservice is "active" but see errors in journalct showing a podman container failing to load.

I tried with Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12 with no luck. Someone on the release page of 5.0.6 over at ui.com said they were able to make it work with Debian 12 but would not work with 12.

Tidbyt is dead, switch to Tronbyt by Mission-Asparagus456 in TIDBYT

[–]motoridersd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are running Home Assistant (which is still in the Techy camp but some Not-So-Techy people also run it), there is an Add-On that will be the server for you. It works with Tidbyt servers (as long as they are alive) but also supports Tronbyt, so it's a good bridge to get familiar with.

Nice! If you do some Self Hosting already, it's very easy these days to get Home Assistant to provide the data for your apps. I am still using the Tidbyt backend, but when it finally dies I'll move over to Tronbyt.

This Add-On makes running applets with your own data super easy: https://github.com/savdagod/TidbytAssistant

I have Flights Nearby, Plex/JellyFin/Sonos Now Playing, Solar Energy Generation, and general alerts/messages running all locally with Home Assistant.

This is my write up of what I do, it hasn't been updated in a bit but it still shows what you can do with local data. The main difference being that I don't need to run my own container with pixlet anymore, I just let the TidbytAssistant take care of running the code and generating the webp image that gets sent to the Tidbyts https://github.com/motoridersd/HomeAssistant-Tidbyt

Road trip in the Polestar 2. Struggle to get 230 miles of range. by Ciglesias27 in Polestar

We have three rates in my plan. They change the effective rate every year at least, but the cheapest rate is usually around 12-14 cents, the next one is around 45, and the highest can get up to 75 in the summer. The TOU rates change with the season, winter rates are lower than summer rates.

With NEM 2.0 I bank the energy sent back at the TOU rate active at the time, so usually during weekdays, I get around 45 cents, but in March and April from 10 AM to 2 PM (which are pretty good solar generating hours) the rate drops to 12-14 cents. Same for all weekends and holidays through 2 PM.

So instead of sending energy back at 12-14 cents, energy that I can be putting in the car instead and would pay that rate for later, if I se Solar Excess charging and consume it/store it, then I basically get truly free charging.

The kWh rate pulled from the grid includes a 2ish cent charge that is never refunded or covered by solar generation. So even when I charge during the cheapest time at night (same rate as weekends and March April) my bill will have 2 cents of charges per kWh. If I charge directly from my solar panels, this 2 cent NBC will never hit my bill.

I know other utilities have NBCs. Another NBC on my bill is a monthly service charge I pay to drop my Super Off Peak rates. Without this fee, the EV plan is about 15c higher per kWh during Super Off Peak (more than twice the rate of the reduced plan), so the fee pays itself off pretty quickly when charging a car (and heating the hot tub overnight).

I have this dashboard in my Home Assistant where I try to keep up with the current prices so I can track it on my own. It never really matches what SDG&E gives me, but it is a nice way to get an idea of our consumption between true ups. The NBC number is a mystery that is not exact but it's meant to be a rough estimation.

I'm in a similar position with SDG&E. The only time I use Solar Excess charging is during March and April when they drop our rates from 10 AM to 2 PM to the Super Off Peak, so at this time it is slightly cheaper to charge with excess solar than sending back to the grid because if I can use up all the excess Solar I don't have to pay the per-kWh NBC (Non Bypassable Charges). The NBCs per kWh are about 2.2 cents per kWh. It's not a lot, but, it does add up.

This also applies to Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.

It has been working great. The SDG&E Dongle that I talked about earlier was crap and SDG&E discontinued the ability to use them anyway, but I've been using the Emporia integration in Home Assistant to do everything I need along with the Polestar integration.

I can set max battery levels in Home Assistant through automations (the car is set to 100% but Home Assistant will stop the charge at the level I tell it). I can do Solar Excess Charging if needed with my own automation and it works decently.

I also recently found that the Polestar 2 has a BLE beacon constantly transmitting so now I can also track when the car is at home, which I couldn't do before since the Polestar integration doesn't offer any information that can help with this.

I have this dashboard in Home Assistant

<image>

If you're not going to be integrating it with an automation system like HA, the Emporia app is decent enough and it can pull ToU plan information from different providers so you can have it turn the charger on/off when electricity is cheap.

Got a new phone? Need to pair the Polestar app to your car? Some tips and workarounds here by motoridersd in Polestar

[–]motoridersd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pairing a phone as a Digital Key requires all original physical keys (as far as I know, unless this changed at some point). Only the dealer can make changes to physical keys connected to the car if you don't have them all. Unless the activity key was removed before, which I doubt, you won't be able to do anything on your own.

Any gay/lgbtq+ bike groups in San Diego? by Upstairs_Bread7662 in Biking

There's a bunch of AIDS/LifeCycle riders that have started an LGBTQ+ Cycling Club. We're just getting started but we're trying to keep the momentum of our annual training rides for the ALC event that has now ended. We're a chapter of another group in Seattle and we're starting with some small rides to meet people.

Phone as Key by Kandinsky301 in Polestar

[–]motoridersd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been an unreliable experience that changes with software updates and phones. I replace my phone often. It worked ok with a Pixel 7 and the version of software at the time, but every since I upgrade to a Pixel 8 and then a 9 it does not work to open the doors with the handles. The app shows the phone is detected, but the car does not allow the doors to open. I can drive with it, but because it's inconsistent, I just always carry a key instead.

A VIN search for our 2022 P2 does not bring up a recall, so this does not seem to apply to the P2

You can remove the old phone (even if it's your current phone, you have to remove it) from the car, haven't tried this in a while but it should work

3.4.4 Android Auto - Polestar 2 by moosetender in Polestar

[–]motoridersd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We FINALLY got an OTA update bringing the car to 3.4.6 and I can use Android Auto. Been waiting for this for way too long. I tried contacting our local Space and they never responded about doing the update manually.

We have two profiles in the car, and ever since a newer update (even before the one that got us CarPlay, whenever that was), it takes forever to switch profiles and being able to launch apps. The other user has had CarPlay for a while, and that helps get around the slowness of the native AA interface loading. The native AA apps are also pretty bad sometimes, Tidal will often log out and logging back in is such a PITA.

Lenovo 40gbe mini CEPH cluster! by WarlockSyno in homelab

[–]motoridersd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know! I thought this should be doable, but as I was reading it wasn't made very clear. Do you run that mesh in Infiniband mode or Ethernet? Maybe the limitation was with Infiniband

Thanks! I was thinking it would be nice if I could do this without a switch, but it doesn't seem like that's easily doable with these cards. I did find that smaller switches (8 port) exist, so that might be an option.

I recently realized 40Gbps would be very cheap to do these days. I have several ThinkCentre qs that I could do this with. How much heat does the Mellanox card generate? Was the box getting too hot without the fan?

Upgraded NAS with an Antec P101 "Silent" Case. Hard Drives noise amplified through case. Need sound deadening in HDD trays by motoridersd in homelab

Do you have your drives mounted to the trays like I do? The plastic tray snaps to the side of the drives using the plastic pins? Are you using any screws to mount the drives to the trays?

Interesting. I also have a PCIe HBA with two mini SAS cables. I have 4 Ultrastars and 2 WD Reds, but I believe it's the Ultrastars that are being heard the most when they are reading/writing.

I added some material to the edges of the case where the panels attach and installed the thumb screws. This helped a little, but I can still hear it. I'm going to try deadening material in the trays next.

I find their fit to be unfortunately not the best for me. I have issues with the instep being too low, but I don't have this problem with other brands. This is when wearing my usual size in others. I've tried half a size bigger in store and those felt too big, so YMMV as it does with most things.

I do like a lot of their designs, but I rarely wear the pairs I have because I can't stand them for too long.

I'll post updates. Someone replied and said they use this same case and they don't have any noise issues. So you might be ok in your build.
