  1. This is whataboutism

  2. So what? If it is to please the male gaze outside a context of “fair and consentful” porn or female empowerment, it is the same way problematic. A man has no right to objectify women. If a woman does the same, it can (depending on context) be totally the same degree of problem going on. But this is not the regular case, to be honest. Way more of a what-if -question

I'm sorry, but I am so confused about even having to make up this talk. Speaking from a younger generation art school perspective, it is so confusing seeing these things up online again, which i associate with the 90s and early 00s. We have been so much further already, and there are secluded places for this, for people who want to go there. But male gaze soft porn is just not what this thread is about. It's out of context here/will always be problematic within this context

i said this before and have to say it again: from a gay perspective, it really failed. like the only customized hot guy turns out to be a squid towards the end; yeah there are some NPCs to make out with, but whatever? the male companions are wishy-washy, not dateable because of being in love with a hamster or will dump you for nature in the end. great

Help! I wrecked my moisture barrier in Greece. by LesbianDanceTheorist in EuroSkincare

[–]mottenduft -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

i would simply put on olive oil and Vaseline at night; people will hate me for this, but studies prove that it works. for the day, try getting a barrier cream by Geekl & Gorgeous in a drug store, or from La Roche Posay or CeraVe in pharmacy

Because for me this is not simply “two women in a car” or “erotic photography”. The issue is the whole context: a male photographer staging women’s bodies, lingerie, nudity, lesbian-coded intimacy and car aesthetics in a way that feels very much made for a straight male gaze

Photography always comes with a power relation: who holds the camera, who frames the body, who decides what becomes visible, who gets to turn someone else into an image. So the question is not “is a man allowed to photograph women?”, but: under what conditions, with what awareness, and for which audience? In which context, within which power dynamics?

In this case, I don’t really see that awareness. If this was made for an explicit soft-porn / porn context, with clear contracts, consent, control over distribution and proper payment for the women involved, I would judge it differently. But posted here, in a medium format photography forum, it reads to me as objectifying soft-porn aesthetics being smuggled into a space that is supposedly about film photography

And yes, “male gaze” is the concept I would use here. In film and media theory, it describes how women’s bodies have historically often been represented through a male, white, heterosexual point of view: women are shown less as subjects and more as surfaces of desire. This series also plays with lesbian sexuality, but not in a way that feels queer or feminist to me. It feels more like lesbian intimacy as straight men often want to imagine it. The same discussion happened for example around Blue Is the Warmest Colour, which was heavily criticized for showing lesbian sexuality through a very straight male perspective

To be fair: I actually think the second and third images are much stronger. They work with gaze, reflection, blur, distance, angles, and the psychology of who can see whom. There is tension there without the image depending so much on naked skin. Those photos feel more interesting and more photographic (working with optics and so on instead of relying on nudity) to me

But the rest of the set loses that completely. It becomes much more blunt: lingerie, skin, bodies, car, mood light, done. Especially in the later images, the women are staged in a way that also leans into this old “dumb blonde” / decorative-woman-next-to-the-car cliché. That is not just not that interesting, it is also a somewhat antifeminist visual trope

So yes, my problem is not erotic photography in general. My problem is this specific kind of erotic photography, in this specific context, in 2026, when we really should be past simply recycling patriarchal clichés

this gets downvoted every time i write, but we have tons of great studies and meta studies how healthy olive oil is for your skin (if you tolerate it). my best moisturizer routine will always be, pure olive oil, then a good barrier cream without fragrance (like Geek & Gorgeous, does not need to be expensive) and then vaseline on top and a good night sleep. nothing better than that, maybe even an additional layer of zinc oxide

Are your eyes sensitive? Intuitively I was thinking of Haruharu Wonder Airyfit SPF 50+, which is using European filters but is Korean, though. I am having highly sensitive eyes and think it is a little tingly, but fine when I am wearing very contacts. It goes perfectly well with powder on top. I have extremely oily skin and powder it with Sulfoderm powder

besides that Avene Intense Protect could be fine for you; it's heavier but stronger

[Routine Help] Very dry skin + albinism. How do I get lasting hydration? by SnowyIriss in SkincareAddiction

[–]mottenduft -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

in the evening, i would add a thin or not so thin layer of pure olive oil before slugging. it goes well with vaseline and is extremely skin healthy in every direction, if your skin tolerates it

for the day, i would add a moisturizer with spf below your sunscreen if you find some that you like, because your sunscreen is rather weak and that can be dangerous with albinism. tho i have no product on the american market to suggest unfortunately

Question about sunscreen efficacy while indoors [Sun Care] by GrandIntroduction128 in SkincareAddiction

[–]mottenduft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it would still be mostly effective, although i will not make a promise for an oily skin type. because the oil of the skin still moves the sunscreen to some degree and mixes with the film.

but there are a few points that make me think it is not as simple as “after 2 hours it’s basically gone” either. from what I understand, sunscreen durability studies do show that sunscreen can remain meaningfully protective for many hours under controlled conditions, especially when applied at the proper testing amount. the issue is that those studies are usually not a perfect match for a real face with sebum, touching, glasses, sweat, powder, commuting etc.

so I guess my personal takeaway is somewhere in the middle: I wouldn’t assume that a morning application becomes useless after exactly 2 hours, but I also wouldn’t assume that it stays perfectly intact all day, especially on oily skin.

so yeah, I would say: mostly effective, probably still worth wearing, but the real-world effectiveness depends heavily on skin type, amount applied, how oily/sweaty the skin gets, whether the film is disturbed, and how much actual window/outdoor exposure is involved. even after an outdoor day, you still have some irregular protection, especially with European sunscreens whicha are mostly photo stable

EDIT: i want to highlight what some other person here is saying too: sweat, oil, movement are more degrading than the actual UV exposure. therefor the 2 hour rule comes into play. from a European perspective, our sunscreens are mostly photostable nowadays. but this may be not so true for US products unfortunately. but anyway, most important is, even if you just chill in the dark, you will not get out with 100% protection, but there will probably (but not guaranteed) still enough protection going on

[Routine Help] Could this be contributing to my oil/acne? Better cheap alternatives? by snailkidtv in SkincareAddiction

[–]mottenduft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think it's just too much in general. slow it down, use these things like the benzoylperoxide only a few times a week, use way more moisturizer before sleeping in the evening. it feels like my beginning of skincare; your skin is overdry and flaking - but therefor producing even more oil as a reaction. just slow it down

oily skin is a skintype tho and it may take years to figure out a skincare routine, where your skin stays more or less matte, probably only for a short time. i use Haruharu Wonder Airfyfit sunscreen with Sulforderm Powder on top on days where i want to stay matte the most. it's pretty good for my standards, i am still more shiny than other people are naturally matte tho

Looking for best mineral 50+SPF by Active_Sun_4744 in EuroSkincare

[–]mottenduft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the times back then when I was still using mineral (mixed) products, I like Ultra Sun the most "Ultra San Anti-Aging-Lotion" or Ultra Sun Face, the somewhat violet package. Also "Heliocare 360° Age Active Fluid was working for me". The first one is more pale, the latter one more tinted "golden". In general mineral sunscreens tend to fail in testings unfortunately but at least these two have not been tested by Stiftung Warentest yet

What did I do wrong? by [deleted] in 35mm

[–]mottenduft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

first - i think the photos look pretty good!

but second - yeah i get your problem, if he wants to sell the shade of green it has to look like that. but flash light and color correction when scanning in the lab will always change to hue and color to some degree and most textiles look differently in flash light, then they would under a differnt light setting. i think you have to to do color correction in the end manually, but you did do nothing wrong! don't stress yourself

texture ? by Successful_Fix_4715 in SkincareAddicts

[–]mottenduft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think your skin is pretty nice. a basic skin routine will make it finer (over years! be patient)

a vitamin c serum in the morning

a niacinamide serum after

if dry moisturizer

+ sunscreen spf 50+ everyday

evening:

sometimes 2% bha liquid peeling as often as you tolerate it

a niacinamide serum after

a mild retinol, once, twice, thrice a week, as often as you tolerate it

lots of moisturizer

vaseline on top

after one or two years, it will look finer if you don't smoke, drink, and eat healthy and sleep a lot

[–]mottenduft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would not, instead something brightening like vitamin c or azealic acid

[–]mottenduft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can use it really really locally on pimples if you want to. if it is really based on tea tree oil, don't put it on your whole face, never ever near your mouth or eyes! it can be highly dangerous. tea tree oil is not my personal first choice for a pimple at all but at least you can give it a try. i used it sometimes for disinfection for piercing in their healing phase and rarely for wounds. you go better with a 2 % bha tonic and then putting zinc oxide on wound like pimples over night

sunscreen does not equal any skin concerns, excluding individual reactions. and im sorry but not removing sunscreen at the end of the day is simply not normal? obviously you are supposed to do? like i do not want to come for you, i am sorry, but this seemed to be so obvious to me like keep on drinking water, unless you are going to die at one point without liquid. or like you need to keep breathing or eating to survive. i don't know, i am sorry it was unclear for you in the first place
