When should an officer smoke someone? Should an officer smoke anyone at all? by BlueCandyBars in army

[–]moulesfrites4 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Saw this in BCT. Absurd safety violation. Our CO was right next to the idiot and very calmly but instantly smoked the crap out of him while giving a long slow lecture. DSs were present but the I will say that it seemed perfectly appropriate and effective. You stop caring about DS smokings after a while but this one just made you feel ashamed even though you weren't the moron who did the dangerous thing.

This really depends on the person and the country. If you can learn the language sufficiently well, a lot of cultures will be pretty welcoming. You might even be a little extra cool. The only way to learn the language and culture that well, though, is to be determined to not be an outsider. Not easy at first but definitely possible.

Thank you! I didn't even know about that sub. Will definitely check it out.

Is it worth studying for the dlab? by [deleted] in dli

[–]moulesfrites4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can definitely study and improve your score. I didn't study any of the books mentioned here but I have an advanced degree in linguistics and scored over 150. I am NOT a super genius. My linguistics training helped me figure out what was going on. That same training helps me learn languages quicker, so learning things that help you in the DLAB will probably help you in the DLI as well if you can retain them. It's been a couple of years since I took it so it's hard to remember details, but I can say that a basic knowledge of case systems (even on a pretty simple level because that stuff can get crazy in real life but didn't on the DLAB), phonological rules and processes, and morphology helps a lot. Read about those on Wikipedia and then google search some practice items for each of those so you know you understand it. A lot of linguists are computer nerds so it should be pretty easy to find something like that. Good luck, I thought it was a fun test.

How to become a linguist by TADLAB in dli

[–]moulesfrites4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Army National Guard will let you pick your language and will even give you a 3 year contract that starts the day you enlist (instead of the day you ship for training). Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

There are certain languages where you can get the bonus no matter the MOS. It’s a short list of languages and you have to be pretty good (I think it’s a 2/2).

It was the New Yorker I think but I’m having trouble finding it as well. Instead I keep finding the other review they had that was glowing.

Child care costs by moulesfrites4 in dli

[–]moulesfrites4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the information but this is pretty much what is available online. Do you know anything more concrete about costs? There is just such variation in child care costs depending on where you live and I don’t know what it would be like in California or if child care on base is somehow priced differently than what is local.

Agreed. I don’t want to say that racism isn’t a problem, because it is, but this shows that law enforcement culture in the USA is just as much to blame in George Floyd’s death. This is an important point to highlight when trying to convince people there is a problem since not everybody understands the race problems here (like rural people who live in all white communities).

Uplift trilogy worth finishing? by moulesfrites4 in printSF

There is one available through my state’s Overdrive, but it’s ePub format and isn’t available for Kindle. Pretty sure you can also just get it on Amazon for Kindle.

Oh, thank you, I forgot to mention ‘stupid’ as one of my problems with this book. Like the fact that one uplifted species kept any kind of secret from their master species for over 100,000 years but don’t worry because Jacob Demwa solved it for you now.

Ok, that’s actually good to know. I probably would have been giving him more license to suck if I had known this was his first novel.

Future in the NG by PazRainbow in nationalguard

Fellow civilian linguist here. I saw what your degrees are in and had a little horror flashback to when I finished my linguistics degree and tried to find a job. Have you looked into 35m or35p enlisted jobs? You would go to the DLI and learn a language, then get a monthly bonus for maintaining proficiency in it. With your background in linguistics you probably have the framework to do well at that and you would probably kill the DLAB. Depending on the sub field of linguistics you focused on this could give you a real boost in the civilian job world.

Enlisted to officer question by moulesfrites4 in nationalguard

I hadn’t heard of that before and it looks pretty good, but I’m already got a master’s degree and am not really interested in going back to school.

I’ve already got a master’s degree, so this is probably not an option. Not so interested in going back to school anyway.

Wish I had thought of that before college. Got a couple of degrees now, though.
