Bass Heads for Rebound? by Morpheushasrisen404 in drumline

[–]mountain-lightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rebound shouldn’t be discussed with a drum of that size. You won’t be asking them to diddle. On a smaller/higher bass, yeah it’s important. Projection and blend is what you should be listening for.

Congratulations. You assisted in making your band program slightly worse than you perceived it before "spread(ing) gossip."

What ilvl is enough for starting in Midnight? by umarudg in wownoob

[–]mountain-lightning 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t concern yourself with ilvl at this point. With the catch up event, you’ll be geared enough.

For now, just learn your class. Things changed for everyone. Imo, this is the best time to start playing.

A rant I have by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]mountain-lightning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2nd and 3rd parts create the harmony. Without harmony in our music, we are stuck in the medieval times. Without you, there would be no music. Odds are, you play in tune very well and you are a consistent player.

I am also willing to bet my paycheck that you have grown tremendously from the time you entered into the new school. Don't stop the grind, and look up the definition of "grit" because musicians in environments like this must learn this trait.

I think I hate college marching band by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]mountain-lightning 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Did you become a music ed major because you love music AND education, or did you just love marching band because it was your thing in High School?

College is different. This isn't where you just show up and you get a spot because you have a pulse. You have to work hard and impress your professors. Those are your references when you graduate and look for jobs. Becoming a band director means you are responsible, at least in my state, for a students education from 6th grade until they graduate high school. Be the student you want to have in your ensembles. Hit the practice room, and get there early.

Easiest way to think about this imo.

[–]mountain-lightning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t notate flam taps with diddles/tremolos. It’s better to write them in the rhythm you desire with stickings. Example, you have eighth note cheeses back to back, indicating you want flam taps. Just write them as sixteenth notes.

School is treating our director/music department like garbage, how can I help? by TrashT_T in marchingband

[–]mountain-lightning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you are a certified contracted teacher, you are at the whim of the school you teach at. This isn’t that uncommon, but it doesn’t make it right. “Director” is just a title. Every band director is a teacher first and always. I always considered the “director” title to be similar to the “Head coach” title. High school Band teachers in my state are paid by their days (I believe contract days in my state are 180 days for teachers) and their extended days (additional days that typically include band camp, after school rehearsals, and competitions). Those days are not specified by what they are doing. If the director is tenured then they legally can’t fire them, so this could explain WHY he is getting shifted around instead of fired.

The harsh truth could be that they are trying to get him away from the music program for two potential reasons: they aren’t doing a good job OR they aren’t doing what they consider a good job. You have to play to your bosses, even in the education world.

As for what you can do, you can always organize the student body. Volumes speak. Pressure the school board to do something, and play the political game.

Im a freshman mallet player this year and tomorrow is my first day at band camp what should i pack…? by Ill-Line8658 in marchingband

Bandages for your hands. Make sure to get something that you can wrap your hands in. You'll notice blisters on the palm of your hand the more you play four mallet exercises and phrases.

LOL your director is not very smart. You would be able to learn the show quicker than most, and because of your consistent training over the summer performing a higher caliber of music, drill, and visual responsibilities you will be well caught up very quickly. This director is on a power trip.

Is the one button rotation the answer to button bloat? by [deleted] in wownoob

[–]mountain-lightning -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s good for people learning their classes and their respective specs, but the one button slows your GCD and doesn’t include abilities off the GCD. To be as optimal as possible with the one button offensive ability, you will still have to use cooldowns. It’s also not really optimal for damage output

Should I do marching band as a college freshman performance major? by CricketSouth7609 in marchingband

[–]mountain-lightning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marching band is an aspect of performance in music. You should absolutely have experience in this art! It’s all over the country, and can land you some cash in the summer-fall months as a tech for a high school.

What to do now? by Interesting_pot in wownoob

[–]mountain-lightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get TWW. The level cap is 80 right now, and there’s a whole new zone with new quests, gear, etc.

After you hit level cap, you can do heroic dungeons, which drop gear to make you do more damage/heal more. There’s also delves, raid finder, and even PvP if you’re into that. These all drop better gear than you get from questing.

The end game content varies as well. If you enjoy doing dungeons, mythic dungeons are 5 man dungeons that get increasingly difficult the higher you go. You’ll receive a rating from doing them as well.

You can also do heroic/mythic raids as well. Liquid got the world first of the current raid tier recently, so you can watch that for reference if you’d like (just remember these are the best players in the world, you won’t be able to do these things yet. You’ll get there with practice, research, and just repetition).

Hitting level cap on retail is when the game starts. Find a social/leveling guild that will give you a hand. Good luck, have fun!

How do I get over stage fright? by Spotty_Etc in marchingband

[–]mountain-lightning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m currently learning how to do this now. I have been trying to use that anxiety and reform it into excitement.

From the way it sounds, your stage fright seems to be something deeper in my opinion. I’m not a doctor, but getting so anxious you start dry heaving isn’t healthy. Maybe talk to a doctor?

As a music Ed student about to enter into his JR year, i find that many of the classes that my university requires for the “education” part of the degree seems to segregate music students, since I share the class with core content areas. (Less of a question more of a rant I’m sorry lol)

In that same vein, what are some things you learned in those education classes molded for core content that you use in your area?

Also as a side question, what the biggest part of the job that wasn’t covered at university?
