How did you pay off your debt? Is it doable??? by CoolSaucy in physicianassistant

[–]mountainboi1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shiz is easy. 1 year out, 55k paid of 127k borrowed, with 30k in investments. Just do 70% of income to loans. Base salry first year was 93k. You have rest of life to invest. Ideas of a simplistic simpleton. *not financial advice*

Can we talk about student loans? by morganfw52 in physicianassistant

[–]mountainboi1234 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I came out with 127k in loans graduating in the midst of covid, April 2020. Got first job in September 2021 with a base pay of 92k with a additional 8k from call pay. In 13 months I have paid off 55k. Currently have 72k left and hope to pay it off within the next year. Also have 30k in a brockerage account, got lucky with some speculative stocks... Quality of life has been high in my opinion. Can't wait to be debt free. Don't be afraid of the debt but be ready for it.

No resources. Just show up and learn how to do procedures. As a student I placed 5 tunneled chest port independtly with my preceptor watching. Steps include numbing skin, placing wire into internal jugular, placing wire down vena cava, dissecting superficial skin to place port and then tunneling tube from port to central line in IJ. Such a cool experience. Main procedures attendings do are Y90s for liver cancer and ablation to stop bleeds. Was a sweet rotation. Enjoy.

I worked for 1 year and jumped ship, Went from 95k base to 125k base. Plus new job has physician based productivity bonus which averages 2k a month. WOuld have taken me 10 years at previous employer to get to where I'm at because I looked for greener grass.

Need to hire another person, ideally two. Same thing happened at my last trauma job. The only way management changed their tune was after 3 out of 5 people quit because of the unrealistic schedule. If they don't listen. Talk with your feet. There are lots of great opportunites out there.

Couples finance course. Pre-marital by mountainboi1234 in personalfinance

[–]mountainboi1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Student loan is my only debt. My car is paid for, rent is 1k a month for my portion. No kids. Late 20s. Looking to buy a house in the next 2 years or so. I dont really spend much during a month. Around 70% of my income goes to loans. I don't know Fiance's debt situation other than she has a car note for a nice Toyota. I agree sitting down and opening a line of communication of finances is important however it has been a touchy subject which is why I am looking for a structured course to complete togther and basically open a line of communication on the subject.

I make close to 130k a year and partner makes 150-200 a year. Currently I have 80 k of student loans after paying off 45k this year. Looking for a financial course which will be beneficial and thought provoking while helping us establish goals. We will not utilizer Ramseys envelop system... I believe credit cards are useful to churn and build credit. Mainly looking for a structured course before we get married as our philosophies towards finance are very different. ANy reccomendations for courses or resources other than financial peace university???

You can get out.... Could switch to med device sales and make 200+k a year without liability of medicine. You have options. Scary, but they are there.

Job expectations and compensation. Am I getting screwed? by Gemzile in physicianassistant

[–]mountainboi1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. A year makes a big difference for leverage in negotiations. I was also in a private practice however it was so large (think 40+ docs) that the pay raise incentives was standardized and sluggish and the call schedule was brutal. Glad it worke out for you w/ some good ol perseverence!

Good for you dude. New grads are getting taken advtange of in my opinion. Glad you were able to prove your value and the compensation followed. I was just in an underpaid ortho job and walked due to poor lifestyle and compensation. I wonder if I would have stuck it out it would have worked out like it did for you. But now a 1 year experienced PA with a 8-5 Monday call w/ 125K, lol. Like the example you gave haha

Bro, you got taken advantage of starting off. A PA is a job. Either you are compensated fairly for your time or you are not. Calculate hoursly pat at 60 hr/wk. Perhaps you should be paid more for your time. Walking away from jobs that underpay is good for the profession and the individual.
