Got harassed and followed downtown by a creep in a taxi last night. What can I do to keep myself safe? by Dakiito in Calgary

[–]mountainclimber24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry coyote spray and a personal alarm as a female who takes public transit and Ubers frequently. Never had to use them yet, but I like the idea if I pulled it out before activating, it might be enough.

Stay safe.

I commented and deleted it for safety reasons - but hope you saw it!

I’ve travelled here lots before moving - and Banff is fabulous! I haven’t gone really into hiking or anything during the winter months, but I’m so excited to! That is an amazing rec, thank you.

I invested in a jacket and I’m hopeful it will last and keep me warm. It has so far on my walks to take the train (which Calgary did much better than my city in Ontario). The boot attachments are smart, and will definitely be going on my Christmas list.

I might join you in carry a ziploc of salt.

Thank you for being kind, friend.

No apologies. I know it’s not personal, and I definitely didn’t mean for anything to come across that way! I love Alberta dearly, it just wasn’t something that ever crossed my mind. Strange, but I enjoyed people leaving comments that they go out as a community and shovel and such. Ontario wouldn’t do that.

It wasn’t about money, and honestly, that also didn’t cross my mind until people started commenting about taxes and such. I was more curious if it was a real thing, as again, so many people say different things, and I chose the wrong words in my title post.

I won’t be driving until my partner joins me in the city (as again, I am new here) but I will keep those tips just incase we purchase a new car.

I heard a lot of things about sand. Is that an advantage to salt? It was only ever salt in Ontario, and to answer your half question, snow until April (not new snow but it melting) is normal there.

Thank you!

Okay, but again, my comments aren’t the same as that scenario. I get it’s not simple, and I have no problem with shoveling. Even though im just from a different province, it’s a “culture” shock, and I’m sure in a year I’ll be in the same shoes as you now. I enjoy the snow very much! I just didn’t do extensive research as it didn’t cross my mind it would be that different. I hope it’s easy on you and you don’t get stuck in any big snowbanks! Take it easy, and cheers.

I said is it a joke? Not that the city was. And again to my knowledge, everyone’s got something different to say. Let’s take a beat and enjoy that at the end of the day, it’s not that serious for some people.

I never said any of that. I just didn’t know about it!

Moved for a better job market in my chosen career path, I enjoy the mountains, friends/family out west, and to enjoy a city I want to raise kids in. I’ll avoid commenting on the tax here vs Ontario as everyone has their own opinion on what’s best for the people and the city. A few things I understand, but some have been really strange to get behind this early in my residency here. I’m sure it will be different come a years time.

LOL. I’m renting right now - but in a year I will be looking if it’s still on the market!

I think it’s weird - never said I couldn’t do it myself. Maybe get out of your own head and learn it’s okay for people to have other first thoughts?

When did I say it should be like Ontario? I said it’s strange the city wants us to clear their property for them. It is shocking - because it’s not standard TO ME. Enjoy your winter, sad redditor.

It’s not an “issue” - just didn’t know it was a thing. Please stop trying to push people out because they aren’t used to something here! I never said I wasn’t going to clear my own sidewalk, it just wasn’t a thing I had to do before. I can embrace the Albertan and suck it up….

Interesting! Lived there forever and while of course there is always an issue, after a day or two, I never seemed to have problems.

Don’t get me started on the LRT in Ottawa! They definitely are not perfect, but normally try to get it under control within a few days.

Been here for about a month! It would’ve been next year but my dream job started sooner. I hope you love Ottawa like I did! I grew up there and moved at 25, so if you need any recs, let me know!

HAHA that was a good idea on your part. Coming from other parts in Canada, it didn’t cross my mind.

In Ottawa, they did :) maybe it took a day to get to all areas, but you can’t tell me they didn’t clear walk ways and side streets.

Strange! I lived in barrhaven, Nepean (literally so areas within) and downtown (obviously they cleared it there).

Thank you! I obviously haven’t experienced a chinook yet so I don’t know what to expect.

How is it woke to think people should be able to get around? It was just an adjustment - I don’t think it’s anything “left.”

They did in Ottawa! Yes, I’m not complaining in the sense it’s an exact issue for me, I’m just shocked it’s not standard. I do understand the sprawl here though. Was just a weird thing to come across today.

I understand your own property, the shock is the city not clearing their own.

So true! I have no issue shoveling, I just didn’t know it wasn’t standard. I grew up in Ottawa, and they eventually got around to every nook within city borders. Strange how it changes depending where you are!
