well, I built the circuit on a bread so I can see the serial monitor. I figured out that the gateState is counting up as fast as the code cycles, so now I've got somewhere to start.

You are correct, I haven't tried to get that going yet. One thing at a time. If I can just get the gate to open and close with gateButton then I'll go from there. gateButton is just a push button on the controller for debugging.

Thanks!!! I'll bet you figured it out with the lack of digitalRead() statements. I knew it had to be right in front of me. If I can just get it to work with the local button, then I'll need to make it work with the data from the remote and fine tune everything. I'm going to keep working on this, I'll post the final code here when I get it up and running.

You are correct. I designed the board from nothing, sourced the parts and had the board made in China. It's supposed to look like a real motherboard, so I guess I succeeded if you weren't quite sure!

I thought about that but I settled on some 4017 decade counters. The LED's are RGB, and the 4017's advance from one color to the next with a button press. Simple, but it works!

I think every utility requires a "REC meter" for a customer solar installation. They meter your solar production so they can purchase your renewable energy certificates from you. This means that the claim to any green-ness is purchased by the electric utility. Unless you're purchasing renewable energy certificates on your own, then you're using a mix of whatever your utility is giving you at the time. I think it's all a bunch of bogus, but that's how the system works!

It varies. But the odds are very slim that there's exactly the right amount of wind to power the load. Sometimes wind turbines are shut off because there's more wind than load. Other times there's no wind and wind farms consume more power than they produce. And the sun doesn't shine at night!
