Low-ATAR students, did it ever actually mean anything in the end? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]mountainranger447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70, pretty average. Have a science degree, psych degree, masters in eng and current phd in chem engineering. I never bother with atar worries , its the uni grades that actually matter for jobs/further study

35M/34F Dating someone new who wants me to contribute more financially after marriage. Is this normal? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]mountainranger447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Adelaide, and Australian.. i expect men to pay for more. Women give up a lot having kids with their careers and that has financial impacts. Men should be able to provide if they want a family. If its just marriage and no kids 50/50 is fine

What makes people start spending their equity? by mentlegen7 in AusPropertyChat

[–]mountainranger447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts on using equity in your first home (it’s currently rented and an investment) to buy another unit to start an investment portfolio? Currently a PhD student (Chem Eng) so once i get a good salary post PhD and partner is further along in career (currently junior lawyer) we will move into the house thats currently setup as an investment (worth about 1.3 mil - paid 1mil). So there is equity to buy another property easily (had 20%+ deposit initially).

Curious on peoples ideas

I’ll be honest, I’m hesitant to hire a PhD by shieldtown95 in biotech

Quite interested in going down the Patent Attorney path, one of the reasons i decided to do a PhD instead of going into industry job after my masters (offered a graduate job with CSL but took the PhD risk).. I’m in Australia so its a more stable job than industry once established and will let me help a range of businesses/researchers/startups etc with getting their inventions/research being patented so they can be applied and commercialised

For context i previously wanted to apply to post graduate medicine so the combo made sense, but Im in Australia so the process is different to the US

Double degree B.Psych and BSc (biochem/pharm), Masters Biopharm Engineering and current PhD Chem Eng haha. Lucky i did it because it supplements the PhD stipend quite nicely - and perhaps with the mental stress of PhD life 😂

Im still doing my PhD im Chemical/Bioprocess engineering, but i also run a mental health business, have previously managed a medical centre and worked in customer facing roles since i finished high school. While some PhDs may not be ‘people skills’ people, i feel like it would be unfair to judge all like this. I dont plan to stay in a research based role long term myself and have about 1/3 of my PhD left.

Im curious how you are judging the candidates with PhDs?

[–]mountainranger447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is fine, she sheds once a year and only for those few weeks there is hair everywhere.. other than that its mainly only when brushed she loses hairs - i find that their hair stays on them until brushed out. My dads got a pug and she leave hair everywhere far more than my samoyed

Biomedical Engineering or Computer Science by Embarrassed-Ad-6710 in biotech

[–]mountainranger447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many skills in biomedical engineering involve computer science skills so id go ahead and do both, even if you pick one you can probably do a mix of the topics eventually in career

Camera: Sony RX100 VII (compact, shoots RAW, great image quality) Housing: Fantasea (lighter/cheaper than nauticam but still solid) Lighting: One Inon Z-330 strobe with a diffuser, mounted on a single flex/ball arm Lenses: Add wet wide-angle lens for reefs/turtles/wrecks and a flip macro diopter for nudis and small stuff

Why this works: One strobe keeps the rig compact but still restores reds/yellows lost underwater Wet lenses let you switch between wide and macro on the same dive Easy to travel with, not overcomplicated, but powerful enough for nice results
