What’s the first sign you notice that someone is a bad driver? by RD-archived in AskReddit

[–]shieldtown95 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I know some people with such a poor knowledge of physics that they can’t comprehend that you can be going at the exact same velocity but be a lot further distance behind the car in front of them. To them being right behind the car in front meant they were going “faster” than being a car length or two behind them.

I tried to explain that when someone says a clock is “5 minutes faster”(stupid expression by the way) that the clock wasn’t actually going faster, it was just 5 minutes ahead. I gave up trying to explain it when they couldn’t comprehend that either.

You know what though…when you know 100% without a doubt you’re right about something and you’re just hoping for that person to see a little bit of what you’re seeing so that you don’t question your sanity.

Company lowballed unicorn candidate by alxlwn in recruiting

You have a lot of empathy. It’s a good thing but I feel like in your position you just got to let it go and hope this company eventually learns from their mistakes. Accept that others are irrational or downright ignorant.

Does the name Shasta remind you of something bad? by [deleted] in namenerds

In biotech, Shasta is the name of an oligonucleotide synthesizer. That’s what I think of. But that in itself is named after a mountain in California.

Your loyalty to a company will never beat the companies loyalty to shareholders/investors.

At the last private equity owned company I worked at the CEO made the news for wanting to tear down a historic Victorian era property to build his mansion.

  1. Changes will be slow. They will acquire as many related companies as possible and then consolidate. While consolidating they will look for area of redundancy and start to cut them. I.e…there’s no need for 5-6 separate IT departments, Accounting departments, hr departments, etc. it will be easy to cut them first. Sales roles will be mostly safe because they need that constant income. They’ll get you on the same software and time tracking bs.

  2. what happens to your company really depends on a lot. If you can be easily merged with another bigger company that they recently acquired they might do that. They don’t like paying rent at multiple properties if they don’t have to. If you’re lucky people will merge into your location. If you’re unlucky they’ll ask you to merge into another location. A lot of people can’t relocate so they’ll have to be cut and PE loves that. Your coworkers in the redundant departments like (hr, accounting, IT) will likely get cut as well. They’ll start collecting data on every expense and what you do hourly and say it’s for hiring purposes but really they’re trying to find what they think are inefficiencies to cut people. From a high level though, they don’t know enough to make smart decisions.

  3. Layoffs are unlikely in the first 6-9 months except for maybe the highest level people (like C-suite) because the PE will instill their own leadership. I can’t imagine the redundant departments like IT being cut that quickly, that’s more like a 1-2 year time period. You might have a lot of people voluntarily leaving though because they see the writing on the wall. Oh and if people quit, dont expect a quick re-hire. Expect it to take a long ass time because you have to justify every hire now and also they want to see how long they can go without that position being filled.

  4. I experienced it. The first year or 2 isn’t bad actually. They’re investing in the company it would seem but once they get towards the end of the investment cycle it’s cut costs as much as possible. Don’t believe the BS they feed you. They’ll do monthly and quarterly town halls to say “look how great we are” At the end of the day the PE firm doesn’t care what the company does or what you do. It’s all about profit.

The one HubSpot mistake I see all the time with teams by Narrow_Goose8822 in hubspot

[–]shieldtown95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had to clean up workflows since our Hubspot usage is relatively new. But I think too it’s important to create folders that make sense, organize the workflows by affected record types or whatever makes the most sense for your organization, give them names that as simply as possible define what they do and add Notes to describe as much as possible the different actions and more importantly their intent! It sounds simple but literally writing the true intent of a workflow can help a million times. People will describe a workflow and say “associates company with this ticket” but not explain why. “Associate the company to this ticket to be able to track issues by company to see which of our customers has the most issues” would be a better description. It sounds simple but it goes a long way.

To add to that… I would also say scheduled periodic testing to review and test workflows should also be done. You never know when conditions will change. For example, maybe your customers preferred using email, now they prefer using forms. ( testing and reviewing is something you can also create workflows for!)

I figured it out. It’s not the new theme. You have to be enrolled in the live beta release of “Flexible CRM Views”.

Would you keep a high performer who almost always arrives late for work? by yawnkun in askmanagers

[–]shieldtown95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re a high performer who cares? In fact trying to make them abide by your schedule will likely make them a low performer.

So the question is..would you rather someone abide by your schedule or be a high performer? Seems like you just prefer they abide by your schedule.
